Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 8/15/17

Steve Adams
3:06
Hello world. Welcome to the chat. Let us commence chatting so that this event my ultimately live up to its name.
Giancarlo
3:06
So am I moving or what?
Steve Adams
3:07
I can't see anyone taking on the contract (hence him clearing waivers)... and I doubt the Marlins are anxious to eat a huge portion of the contract to make the trade happen. It's not a great look for the new ownership group to say, "We're here, fans! Loria is gone! Also we just paid $100MM to make the face of the franchise play for another team."
Gogerty
3:08
Chances Arrieta becomes FA and chances Braves could suggest him?
Steve Adams
3:09
100% he becomes a free agent. I'm sure the Braves will be linked to him and other top-tier free agent arms. The whole "Braves are pursuing long-term starters" mentality has been going on long enough that it'll honestly be more of a surprise to me this offseason if they *aren't* linked to him.
Zach
3:09
Who will be the next mets veteran to go? Or are they done selling?
Steve Adams
3:09
I can still see Granderson going somewhere this month. Maybe Rene Rivera.
Mr.met
3:09
Why is my team so cheap?
Steve Adams
3:10
The team that opened the season with a $152MM payroll and spent $110MM to re-sign Yoenis Cespedes last summer?
Last winter*
Bunion Bob
3:10
Any idea who Brewers PTBNL may be for Walker?
Steve Adams
3:11
I don't think it'll be anyone worth getting particularly excited over. They've been targeting hard-throwing bullpen prospects, it seems. Maybe another cut from that cloth.
Bartolo
3:11
When will I retire?
Steve Adams
3:11
He's throwing fairly well with the Twins -- if he keeps this up through season's end, I'd bet he plays in 2018 at the least.
Marc
3:12
Darvish, Tanaka, arrieta, cueto... Who is getting paid most aav and total
Steve Adams
3:12
I'll take Darvish on both, though maybe he takes a slight AAV hit to get an extra year tacked onto his contract. In that scenario, I could see Arrieta taking a shorter deal with a larger AAV. (And by "shorter," I mean "shorter than Darvish," so probably still 4-5 years)
Bryce
3:13
Any chance Benintendi overtakes Judge for AL ROY?
Steve Adams
3:13
Can't see how he could. Judge got off to such a head start that even with his ugly second half (so far), he's still considerably ahead.
Pillar
3:14
Will the Jays trade anyone in August?
Steve Adams
3:14
I think they'll move Estrada before the month is over.
Oddball Herrera
3:14
not hearing much on Cozart - did he get put on waivers? seems an obvious trade candidate but it's been quiet...
Steve Adams
3:15
Not sure if he's been on waivers yet, but there isn't a huge market for shortstops. I still think there's a decent chance he's moved, but the Reds don't need to force the issue and simply take whatever they can get. Cozart has played well enough and is such a good defender that I'd be perfectly comfortable making a qualifying offer.
Jr
3:15
Not Rene, hes our best catcher
Steve Adams
3:16
He's also a free agent at the end of a season in which the Mets aren't competing at all
Brody
3:16
Do you think the Jays have a shot at the postseason?
Steve Adams
3:19
Technically, sure. They're only 3.5 back of a Wild Card spot, though they'd need to leapfrog like 5-6 teams. But I don't think it's likely at all. We're talking about a team using Nick Tepesch to start with current catching options including Rafael Lopez and Mike Ohlman.

Sanchez, Tulo, Travis and Martin are all on the shelf... Bautista is a shell of his former self. I don't see it.
Sparkman
3:19
If you build it, will they come?
Steve Adams
3:19
If I build something, it's probably poorly made.
Masahiro Tanaka
3:19
Will I opt-out at season"s end?
Steve Adams
3:20
If the shoulder issue he's currently dealing with proves to be minor, and he's back in 10-12 days or so, I lean yes. The homers are a problem, but he's missing tons of bats with excellent control and a well above-average ground-ball rate. He's 29. Topping a $67MM guarantee just doesn't seem like it'll be especially hard, even with some health risks.
36-year-old Rich Hill got $48MM last winter.
Joey Votto
3:21
Any chance I am the NL MVP?  Bad team but I should have a chance no?
Steve Adams
3:22
There's a chance, sure, but not a good one. The bad team thing doesn't matter to me so much as the fact that guys like Goldschmidt, Rendon, Seager, Blackmon and others are all having huge years as well. And plenty of voters will still (for some asinine reason) still take team record into consideration.
Tim Beckham
3:23
I'm realizing my potential, glad Baltimore did not sell
Steve Adams
3:23
Been a lot better this year and I like the low-cost pickup for Baltimore, but he's rocking a .400 BABIP and a 30% K rate. The increased hard-hit rate and line-drive rate is nice, but there's overall regression in store, even if some of the improvements are legitimate.
Smith
3:24
More likely to be dealt: Justin Verlander or Marcus Stroman?
Steve Adams
3:24
If "neither" was an option, I'd take it. But forced to choose between the two, Verlander. A 5-10% chance is greater than a 0-1% chance.
Jed Lowrie
3:25
Can some Contender pick me up, so I get a chance to play in the post season?
Steve Adams
3:25
I'm truly baffled as to why this hasn't happened. Lowrie is cheap and having a great season with a beyond reasonable team option for the 2018 campaign. I don't know how he doesn't get traded by Sept. 1.
Altuve
3:26
What are the chances for me to win AL MVP?
