Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 8/19/19

Greetings all! Apologies on last week's non-chat. I was on vacation. I'll be traveling for MLBTR tomorrow so won't be able to get a chat in then ... thus, we get an impromptu Monday chat! 'Tis an amazing time to be alive, is it not?

Where do you think Antony Rendon will sign in the offseason
Steve Adams
2:16
With the caveat that these things are a crapshoot even in the offseason (let alone while games are still being played), I have a hard time seeing the Nats let him go. They can afford it, even with the luxury concerns, and they already let Harper walk. I think there'll be a strong push to keep him right where he is.

Other clubs I expect to be involved to varying extents: Yankees, White Sox, Rangers, Braves, Phillies ... interest will be widespread, even among teams that don't have clear corner needs, because Rendon's the type of talent you move pieces around to fit into the picture.

Y/N: the A's adding Puk, Luzardo and Murphy before the Sept 1 postseason cutoff deadline is the biggest deadline acquisition
Steve Adams
2:16
All of those players are postseason eligible regardless of when they get called up.
A player only needs to be in an organization by Sept 1 -- not on the MLB roster.

Should I be nervous about Mitch Keller’s future as a front-line starter?
Steve Adams
2:17
Based on five MLB starts made at the age of 23? No.

2:17
Do you think Sean Manaea will return as a starter or in the pen?
Steve Adams
2:18
I don't see how they could realistically feel they're better with Homer Bailey starting games than with Sean Manaea doing so.

Does Yastrzemski get any ROY consideration?
Steve Adams
2:20
I can't fathom placing him ahead of most rookies in the NL who have vastly more games under their belts. Alonso is the clear front-runner, and you can't put Yaz ahead of Tatis or Verdugo. Carson Kelly has been excellent, Mike Soroka, Chris Paddack ... Yaz has had a real nice 70 games or so, but he's not a serious contender for the award barring some Herculean finish. Even then, he's more a "get some stray votes" guy than a player with a real chance at winning.

any potential impact players going to be DFA’d by non contenders? I mean Texas has to put Shin Soo Choo out there right?
Steve Adams
2:22
Why would they? They know no one is going to claim the rest of his contract, so doing that would effectively be the same as releasing him and paying him to go play for another team.
2:23
They're not doing that when he's hitting .272/.373/.481. These aren't revocable waivers like in Augusts past

Do the Yankees make a run at Gerritt Cole in the offseason?
Steve Adams
2:24
It'd a surprise if they didn't. They'll have competition of course -- Angels, White Sox, Twins, Rangers, Astros, Braves, Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, etc. etc. -- but they'll be in the mix.
Billy Hamilton update?
2:25
Has he cleared Waivers yet?
Steve Adams
2:26
They've got a week to run him through waivers, and there's a better chance of him getting claimed if they put on waivers as late as possible (the five-day mark; waivers themselves are a 48-hour process)
2:27
At that point, it's closer to September, meaning his new team is carrying a pinch-running specialist on a 25-man roster for less time, and he's owed less money (as the Royals are paying him every day he's in DFA limbo)
2:28
I don't know that it's a guarantee he'll be claimed anyway, but the Royals probably want to give themselves the best chance at saving some cash. Might as well wait as long as they can (Wednesday)

Ok I get the Astros are good but they won't move me yet really have no place for me. If I come up in September, am I playing or just getting a closer seat to watch the team?
Steve Adams
2:30
Doubt he's playing every single day, but if they're considering him for the postseason roster, as Jake Kaplan implied at The Athletic yesterday, then they've got to give him semi-regular looks at the plate.
Yoenis Cespedes
2:31
Any chance i make any impact for my team this year?
Steve Adams
2:31
The Mets announced him as out for the season back in May:

Herrman over Garneau?
2:32
The A’s cutting the hot hitting catcher Dustin Garneau to keep Chris Herrmann, simply because “he bats Left Handed”, is a head scratcher decision for me.  Herrmann is batting under .200
Steve Adams
2:35
You're also judging Garneau based on 19 PAs with Oakland. He's a career .207/.290/.340 hitter. Herrmann has more power, hits left-handed, can play the OF and 1B if needed. He's on a slightly larger contract ($1M base), etc.  I doubt the A's (or any team) are ever going to make a roster decision based on 19 plate appearances.

Assuming we hold on to win the division again, do you think (liberty media) and I will actually spend more money this off season.
Steve Adams
2:37
I've given up even trying to figure out what the Braves are doing after they inexplicably took on the remainder of Mark Melancon's contract. You publicly tout financial flexibility that much, then use it to eat the remaining money owed to a 35-year-old Melancon?

That's among the most surprising trades I've seen in a long time.

Why isn't Evan Gattis on a team?
Steve Adams
2:39
I'm not sure. I reached out to a couple people on that midseason and never heard back. And not one major reporter has put out any kind of update on him, either. If his agents wanted an update on him out there or some reason as to why he's not playing out there -- it'd be out there. It's too bad, I love Gattis' whole image. He's a lot of fun.

"MLB" or "The MLB"?
Steve Adams
2:40
I cringe when someone type "the MLB."

Did I look like a genius for unloading Nate Jones for two young, albeit not very promising minor-leaguers ?
Steve Adams
2:42
The White Sox didn't really unload Jones. They included some cash and international bonus money as well. I actually quite liked that deal for Texas.

Who’s your top rookie pick for next season that you see making his way to the show?
Steve Adams
2:44
Jo Adell, Luis Robert, Gavin Lux, Casey Mize, Kyle Tucker, Jesus Luzardo -- there'll be droves of them, as there are every year nowadays. Should be plenty of exciting early-20-somethings popping up in early '20.

What’s your favorite walk-up song for a hitter?
Steve Adams
2:46
I always laughed at Nick Punto walking up to "In The Air Tonight" for a bit in Minnesota. Gerardo Parra using Baby Shark is pretty amusing. Alex Gordon used Stone Cold Steve Austin's theme music when I was at a Royals game in KC once, which was great. Not sure how long he stuck with that, but I approved, ha.

What’s up with Franmil Reyes I thought he was a better hitter than this
