Steve Adams

A fully healthy Yankees vs. a fully healthy Astros would be an interesting debate, but Houston has fewer key injuries right now, and Correa sounds like he'll be back in early Sept., too.

Resign Ozuna 5/85 who says no cards or him
Steve Adams
5:03
I think that's a longer and more lucrative contract than Marcell Ozuna will receive this winter.
Rick Hahn
5:04
I think we'll see in Glendale if the White Sox will contend in 2020, but I would love to hear your thoughts
Steve Adams
5:05
Can't answer that until we see how they operate in the offseason. I'd expect them to be motivated buyers, but whether they actually lure any top-tier free agents to Chicago or trade for any significant pieces can't possibly be known now.

What could the Phillies get back for Cesar if they traded him, and where might he go?
Steve Adams
5:08
He's at the point where his arbitration salary might exceed the number at which other teams value him. Second base is always a deep position. Any return on him would be minimal, and while I'm not saying they'll non-tender him, I also wouldn't be completely shocked to see it happen.
5:09
That's not to say he's not a good/useful player. He is. But useful players still get non-tendered sometimes. The question here is: do the Phillies (or any other club) view him as a $10MM+ player?
Jason
5:09
Since the Braves picked up Melancon’s 2020 salary (insane), would it be an upset if he wasn’t given a long leash to be their main closer in 2020?
Steve Adams
5:10
They picked it up and then immediately put Shane Greene into the closer's role, so I don't think his salary will have much bearing on how they use him in 2020. (Also -- agreed that taking on that entire salary was baffling)
DJ Lobsterdust
5:11
Where will DJ LeMaheiu be playing next season?
Steve Adams
5:12
He's on a two-year deal, so with the Yankees -- probably all over the diamond again.
Cards fan
5:12
Cards recent run a mirage or is this team a contender?
Steve Adams
5:13
I don't think they've ever NOT been a division contender. There's no clear-cut best team in the NL Central. I wouldn't pick St. Louis as a likely World Series participant, but they could certainly win the division (as could Chicago or Milwaukee)
Brew crew
5:13
Do Brewers have the payroll flexibility to fix their pitching issues in the offseason while keeping key FAs and bolstering offense?
Steve Adams
5:16
They had a near-$130M payroll in 2019 and only have $51M committed to next season without too much in the way of huge arbitration raises coming. I think they'll be wary of paying Grandal top dollar on the multi-year deal he'll likely command, but they should be able to afford a multi-year deal to install Moose at 3B (moving on from Shaw) and add some meaningful pitching, yes.
Brewers trade yelich?
5:17
Would the brewers ever consider moving yelich this offseason to retool the roster since they’re likely missing the playoffs? Atlanta looks like a good match, Pache/waters and a couple of the pitching prospects
Steve Adams
5:18
Why would missing the playoffs one year cause Milwaukee to trade one of the game's 5 best players, who happens to be on one of baseball's best contracts? One playoff miss shouldn't send a team into a rebuild/retool mentality, and Milwaukee fans would riot if they dealt Yelich.
neal Huntington
5:18
Will I trade Felipe Vazquez in off season. and will be my return
Steve Adams
5:19
Huntington (Pirates GM) made so many comments about keeping Vazquez and expecting him to close future playoff games for the Pirates that trading him just a few months later would require a pretty staggering overpay from the theoretical trade partner in question.
Billington

AL Manager of the year has to be Kevin Cash correct?
Steve Adams
5:20
I'd imagine Cash, Baldelli and Melvin will all get consideration in the race for "manager of the playoff team that was least expected to make the playoffs"
CJ10
5:21
What are the odds of the Braves going after Mad-Bum?  Do you think they sign Teheran for another year or two after this season?
Steve Adams
5:23
I'll be surprised if they're not involved in the Bumgarner market.

They don't need to re-sign Teheran; they have a $12M option on him with a $1M buyout (which basically makes it a net $11M decision). That might be a bit steep for him based on his non-ERA numbers, but he's a durable source of 30+ starts who isn't that far removed from very clearly being worth well more than that sum.
James McCann
5:23
What kind of deal am I getting this winter?
Steve Adams
5:24
He's controllable via arbitration, so he'll get a decent raise but still make something under $7MM probably.

Does Nelson Cruz finish in Top 5 for MVP? Provided Twins hold on
Steve Adams
5:26
Doubt it. He's missed a lot of time and has zero defensive or baserunning value. I don't think most voters would even consider him the Twins' MVP.
Big hands
5:27
Will Merrifield  be available in the off-season, I still believe he’s a perfect fit for the Cubs!
Steve Adams
5:29
He'll be available in a "We'll trade him if you give us your top 3 MLB-ready prospects/young players, the naming rights to your stadium, your first-born child and do my chores for the next six months" type of way.

I think he SHOULD be (more) available, for the record.
5:30
Giants announce that they've released Scooter Gennett
5:31
I've got to wrap this up for the week. Thanks for chatting, everyone. We'll do it again next week! Until then, I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve.
