Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 8/29/17

Steve Adams

There are always a few trades in the final days, it seems. I'd bet we see 2-3 moves at least.
Moose

Klentak trades one, both, or none of Freddy and Cesar this offseason?
Steve Adams
3:28
One of the two, I'd wager. Can keep the other as a utility guy -- Galvis probably fits that a bit better since he can play a solid shortstop. He's expensive for a bench guy, but the Phils aren't paying anyone else much next year so why not? Can get him 3+ starts a week spelling Kingery, Crawford and Franco eventually.

Shane Greene a legit closer?
Steve Adams
3:28
He's a solid big league reliever, which makes him perfectly qualified to close for a team like the Tigers. If he could rein in the walks he'd be outstanding.

The Cards still in on Stanton? They did their little "We're happy where we are" speech after the hot streak and now it's back to no offense. The Stanton article the other day said they'd contacted them
Steve Adams
3:29
I'm sure they're still interested, and they have plenty of young OFs and arms that could interest the Marlins, but nothing's happening there till the offseason at the earliest, and I'm not as convinced as some that a Stanton trade is any kind of foregone conclusion.

Iglesias to d backs?
Steve Adams
3:30
He was already claimed and pulled back off waivers, so that won't happen.

Does Cowart play 2b or 3b next year for Angels?
Steve Adams
3:31
Jays announced they released Nori Aoki
(Not related to that question-- just saying)
3:32
Cowart is hitting .120/.185/.260 since Aug. 5 and he's making hard contact at about two-thirds the rate of the league average in that time without much plate discipline
3:33
I know Angels fans got really excited about his first 10 games or so up in the Majors this year, but I never bought into it and said as much at the time. I don't think they can or will count on him in 2018.
Dirk Diggler
3:33
Does Brandon Phillips get traded to the Angels or does that just make too much sense?
Steve Adams
3:33
Someone -- Jon Heyman I think -- said their interest is pretty minimal. I think it'd make sense though and it wouldn't cost them anything
Fatmike
3:34
Do you think Braves need a new pitching coach?  seems like when pitchers leave Braves they seem to have more success ala Bartolo
Steve Adams
3:35
They already changed pitching coaches. Chuck Hernandez is in his first year there after 10 years of Roger McDowell
I'm going to make a quick update to note Aoki was released on the site -- one second
3:36
Ooook

Who's job is in the most jeopardy:  Collins, Ausmus, Gibbons, Price, none of the above?
Steve Adams
3:38
Well Collins said when he signed his current deal (that runs through 2017) that he wasn't sure if he wanted to manage beyond it, so of the bunch I'd say he's least likely to return in 2018.
Braves Phanatic
3:38
So Roger McDowell didn't do that well after former Braves pitchers leave, and Tillman, Gausman, etc. aren't doing well. Is this a sign?
Steve Adams
3:40
Tillman missed the beginning of the season with shoulder injuries and I don't think he's been healthy all year. That's not on McDowell, and I wouldn't pit one poor season from Gausman on him either. Not like those are the first pair of O's pitchers to struggle in recent years, though Gausman's decline was a surprise to me. Still -- one year doesn't tell you much in that regard.

Will Gio Gonzales get any love from the Cy Young voters?
Steve Adams
3:40
I'm sure he will based on the ERA,but he's not going to come close to winning it, I wouldn't think.
Holy Cow!
3:41
Any chance for a Heyward/Verland swap of expensive contracts?
Steve Adams
3:41
On what planet does that help the Tigers?
Imma bucco
3:41
Rivera a top 5 NL closer next year?
Steve Adams
3:41
If we're sticking to just the NL, yeah I'll buy that. MLB-wide might be a bit of a stretch, but Rivero is damn good.
Mile High
3:42
Does Jon Gray take the same step forward next year that Robbie Ray took this year?
Steve Adams
3:43
Ray had a considerably higher strikeout rate, but I do think Gray is in for a significant step forward, yeah. Pitching half his games at Coors is always going to hurt, though guess you could say something similar about Ray and Chase
Jordan
3:44
based on what the chatters in here have to say it appears that Steve Adams & Jeff Todd hates every MLB team...
Steve Adams
3:45
Heh. We think very similarly and both get accused of hating on the Orioles a lot since they don't make a lick of sense to either one of us. But hey they keep winning, so sure. Braves fans seem to think I have it in for them as well, which isn't true, but c'est la vie.
David Stearns
3:45
And what on earth do I do with Jonathan Villar...........
Steve Adams
3:45
Send him a fruit basket for not signing that $23MM extension
Meet me in Cincy
3:46
Does Louis Castillo have a chance to be an ace in the next couple of years?
Steve Adams
3:46
I wouldn't put him at ace upside until he improves his control, but he's my favorite of the Reds' young arms at the moment. and I do think he has a future as a well-above-average starter.

3:47
matt kemp and a decent starting pitching prospect for verlander?  kemp (16 mil a year the braves are paying) offsets the cost and could dh. Verlander has said he grew up a braves fan.
Steve Adams
3:48
The Tigers want someone to take on Verlander's contract AND give up multiple premium prospects. Not an expensive aging OF and one "decent" prospect. If Coppolella asked for Verlander and started with "We could send you Kemp..." I don't think Avila would even stay on the line.
