Steve Adams

If it's time for a chat, then a chat we shall have.
...And it is indeed time for a chat! How fortuitous.

Assuming Upton opts out, do I try to re-sign him or go after JD Martinez?
Steve Adams
3:12
Upton has more defensive value, they've had interest in the past, they've gotten to know him for a month. I'd bet he's there guy over JDM.

Could also try to just tack an extra year onto his deal in the exclusive window they'll have after the season.

What future free agent third baseman should be on the Padres for their rebuild? Donaldson, Arenado, Machado, Rendon? Other?
Steve Adams
3:13
I don't think shelling out $100MM+ for any of those guys meshes with what the Padres are trying to achieve as part of a rebuild Also, Donaldson is 32.
Or he will be this winter.

Is nicasios trade the biggest September trade this year?
Steve Adams
3:13
I'll be surprised if we see a bigger one, yeah. The biggest September trade I could think of prior to that was Octavio Dotel to the Rockies in 2010, so... yeah. Ha.

3:14
Phillies more likely to trade Franco or Crawford?
Steve Adams
3:14
Franco, easily. But I don't know that I'd consider either especially likely to move.
Coppy
3:15
Obviously Markakis is the easier contract to move, but do I try hard to move Kemp first?
Steve Adams
3:17
I'm sure he'll try to move both simultaneously this winter -- I doubt they'll sit back and hold off on shopping Markakis to see if there's a Kemp taker first. It'd be in their best interest to find takers for both of them, though that's obviously a tall order.
Regardless, I'd wager Coppy & Co. have already been trying to gauge whatever restrained interest there is in that pair.

What does the White Sox rotation look like next year?
Steve Adams
3:19
Giolito, Lopez, Rodon, Shields and some free-agent veteran in the early stages, with Shields and the FA eventually giving way for Kopech and another of their young arms. (Adams, Danish, Fulmer, etc.)

Does seattle have a chance with paxton and felix coming back?
Steve Adams
3:22
There are probably seven teams with a chance for the second AL spot. Seattle is one, and their odds are improved by that return (especially Paxton). But at this point, it's like a short playoff series -- anything can happen. I wouldn't call Seattle a favorite, but sure maybe they have a 10% chance or so.

Now that all of the PTBNL guys have been announced, how do you grade the Mets on their trades
Steve Adams
3:23
It's an underwhelming collection, but I wasn't expecting otherwise. The market for bats was pretty weak all summer (and all last winter). If they get two relievers out of the bunch, save $10MM+ and reallocate that money to 2018 for a bunch of guys that were going to walk without draft-pick compensation anyhow, that's a win in my book.
Ricardo
3:24
Thoughts on a Didi Gregorius extension?
Steve Adams
3:24
At this point he's in the same four-plus service class that Segura was when he signed for $70MM. I'd assume his camp would look to top that by a fair margin

Am I good at baseball?
Steve Adams
3:25
Relative to the Earth's general population? Absolutely.
Relative to the rest of Major League Baseball? Eh.

Where do I end up next year?
Steve Adams
3:26
In Toronto on Opening Day. No way of knowing at this time beyond that, as his fate will be entirely dependent on the Blue Jays' success and the number of injuries or drops in production around the rest of baseball.
Jason
3:27
What second basemen can you see the Angels pursuing this off-season? I have doubts they'll try to keep Phillips...
Steve Adams
3:27
Trade for Cesar Hernandez? Would solve things for three years and give them a solid all-around guy, even if he doesn't necessarily excel in one given area.
Torin
3:28
Would you be shocked to see the O's deal for Markakis?
Steve Adams
3:28
I don't really see how it'd make them significantly better than they already are, and there are comparable players in free agency that won't cost $10.5MM.
Otani
3:28
What's the real scoop in this guy? When will he sign and w whom?
Steve Adams
3:29
There is literally not a single person in the world who knows when/where Otani will sign. Otani doesn't know that. He probably doesn't even know for certain if he's going to be a free agent this winter.
If you want more details on him though

MLBTR contributor Chuck Wasserstrom spoke to a half-dozen high-ranking international scouting personnel from MLB clubs back in March to get a comprehensive scouting report on him as both a pitcher and a hitter:

Thoughts On Tanaka opting out?  It is rumored here in NY that if he does, the Yanks will not resign him.  Lip service??
Steve Adams
3:31
I think he should opt out, and I won't be surprised if the Yankees pass on making an aggressive pursuit. They're looking at Severino, Gray, Montgomery in 2018 with some intriguing younger arms (Adams, Sheffield) and could opt for more affordable free-agent reinforcements that won't come with such a high luxury tax hit.

Assuming Braves could move Kemp and Markakis, would a Matt Adams/Lane Adams be such a dumb idea?
Steve Adams
3:32
I would never assume the Braves could move both of those contracts. And playing Matt Adams in the outfield regularly makes no sense.

Could the Reds aquire Stroman from the Jays if the talks started with Tyler Mahle and Adam Duvall? Add a couple other young pitchers like Reed &/or Garrett?
