Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/13/19

If I knew any of the words to that Friday song by Rebecca Black, other than "It's Friday," I'd surely post them here.
That's like -- a dated reference now, isn't it? I'm super up on things.
1:57
At any rate -- I'm chatting Friday in what I believe will be Jeff's spot moving forward, as he chatted for me on Tuesday. So let's get to it!

If the Red Sox decide to trade Betts, what teams would be interested and what could they get for him?
Steve Adams
1:59
I think virtually any club with a deep farm, some payroll capacity and eyes on contending. You'd see everyone ranging from Houston, Los Angeles, the Cubs, the Braves, Phillies, Mets, etc. -- the price would need to include some immediate MLB help with 5+ years of control and substantial upside, even if Betts is going to command close to $30MM in arb this winter (which is a ridiculous but also true statement)

What happens in Boston this offseason? Do they reset?
Steve Adams
2:00
I doubt ownership signs off on a major rebuild, but trading Betts and some other short-term assets for immediate MLB help seems plausible. They'll still have Devers and Bogaerts controlled cheap for years to come.
2:01
Let's see who they hire as GM/prez first before jumping to any conclusions. No way of knowing for now.
Inquisitive White Sox fan
2:01
How safe are the white Sox coaches considering the horrible second half the team is having
Steve Adams
2:03
Guess there could be some turnover on the coaching staff, but I believe Renteria said the other day he expects they'll be back. Hard to pin too much of the blame on them when they just don't have THAT much talent on the roster. Some of the fruits of the rebuild are beginning to rise to the MLB level, but there's still an awful lot of flotsam there
Mets Bullpen
2:03
Do you think BVM will prioritize relief pitching this offseason???  Do you see Will Smith as a fit???
Steve Adams
2:03
I don't see why he wouldn't, but.... he also prioritized it last winter, and that was an unmitigated disaster.
Will Smith will be a fit for any team needing 'pen help, and sure, the Mets can afford him
Polar Bear
2:04
Will Alonso get MVP votes this year???
Steve Adams
2:05
Votes as in... appear on the back half of some ballots? Absolutely. Votes as in... have a an actual chance to win? He's not up on the Yelich/Bellinger/Rendon level though
Bradley Zimmer
2:06
Will I make an impact these final two weeks of the season???
Steve Adams
2:06
I doubt he'll have a huge role beyond late-inning defense, pinch-running, maybe some pinch-hitting against a righty here or there.
Cubs fan
2:06
Why haven’t the Cubs put Baez in the IL yet
Steve Adams
2:07
There's no need to unless they want to put him on the 60-day and select someone who isn't on the 40-man

2:08
What's your take on the idea that the reason young, part-time players, that haven't taken advantage of their limited opportunities, only need regular playing time to be productive? Thanks for the chats Steve!
Steve Adams
2:09
I'd say that's generally an oversimplification and that a lot of those players are in part-time roles for a reason. Not universally the case, of course, but I think that in general, overarching blanket statements like that are going to be incorrect in baseball.
Pirates fan
2:10
Should the Pirates fire Neil Huntington or Clint Hurdel?
Steve Adams
2:11
Ownership seems like a much larger problem to me than the front office or dugout -- though all the stuff with Kela and now Vazquez and Crick is sort of damning for Hurdle.

I've always been curious to see what Huntington would do if every move he made didn't have to weighed against the backdrop of knowing he has to keep payroll under $70M.
Wild Card
2:12
Can and will the Athletics hold on to make the playoffs?  Is this a huge deal considering how much less they spent than the Red Sox?
Steve Adams
2:13
Big money teams miss the playoffs every year, just like some small-payroll clubs make it every year. I don't think that element is a "huge" deal, no.

And yeah, there's no reason to think the A's can't do it. The two WC spots are going to be a combo of Oakland, TB and the AL Central runner-up. At this point, anyone within 4 games of a postseason berth has a viable chance.
Yankee fan
2:14
Yanks the favorite to get Cole this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:15
Didn't take a "by any means necessary" approach to Machado or Harper or Corbin this winter. Haven't operated in that capacity in awhile. There's no "favorite" for Cole right now, but I'll say that I think the Angels will be more motivated to try to take that type of "whatever it takes" approach than the Yankees will be.

2:16
Could the Rockies trade Trevor Story this offseason for pitching with Rodgers MLB ready and their already high payroll for next year?
Steve Adams
2:19
I think they SHOULD do something like that but probably won't. The Rockies are in pretty poor shape right now... bad farm system, high payroll, tons of dead money and buckets of holes to fill. It's not a great combination. I wouldn't mind them doing some kind of quick reset where they trade their mid-term assets like Story, Jon Gray, etc. for upper-level minor league talent.

I get that "FULL SCALE TEAR DOWN REBUILD IT ALL" is en vogue, but it's rarely necessary (it was in Baltimore and Detroit). Look what the D-backs got for Goldschmidt and Greinke -- guys who contributed or will contribute almost immediately. That's where Bridich & Co. should be looking.
StevesTwin
2:19
Can Minnesota get Cole?
Steve Adams
2:20
I imagine they'll be on the periphery there but I do have a hard time seeing them offer what could require the largest commitment ever made to a pitcher.
Bernie Brewer
2:20
Could Yeli possible return for the WS? Long(very) shot but that would be like 7 weeks or so.
Steve Adams
2:20
Brewers said 8-10 weeks. I don't think it's plausible.
AL Rookie
2:21
Who is your choice for ROY in AL?  Eloy has to be top 3?
Steve Adams
2:22
Eloy's barely keeping his OBP above .300. Yordan Alvarez gets my vote pretty easily
John Means should get some runner-up consideration -- quietly very nice year in an awful setting for pitchers.
Becky Black
2:22
IT'S FRIDAY FRIDAY GOTTA GET DOWN ON FRIDAY [mumbles rest of song]
Steve Adams
2:23
THERE WE GO MORE WORDS.
Rangers fan
2:23
What are the chances that the Rangers sign both Gerrit Cole and Anthony Rendon to open their new stadium??
Steve Adams
2:23
I can't imagine Texas spending upwards of $400MM on two free agents.
