Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/18/18

Outside of Folty and Newcomb, they were always thin on rotation strength, and that pair has long had control issues. I've said in a few of these chats over the course of the year that I thought the Braves needed to add to the rotation. I still think, at this point, they have a big enough lead to take the division, but I wouldn't feel great heading into a playoff series if I were a Braves fan.

Who do you see as the Angels manager?
Steve Adams
4:30
If Scioscia leaves, Girardi seems like a legitimate option. Big name manager on a big market team, taking over for a high-profile name... Yankees connection with Eppler, etc.
FresYES
4:30
Is Nats-to-Fresno a foregone conclusion at this point?  Is there any other alternative?  (Also, wouldn't the ocean water put out the car fire?)
Steve Adams
4:30
They just announced it.
4:31
And yeah, I suppose, but I was imagining letting the car burn for awhile before it sank, ha.
Mariners Shmariners
4:31
Steve! Tell me the Mariners can still make it?
Steve Adams
4:31
Mathematically, sure, they can make it.
4:32
Realistically, no. But mathematically, they're not eliminated yet!
Brian
4:32
Do you see the giants being one of the front runners to signing Harper
Steve Adams
4:33
They have boatloads of money, sketchy outfield depth, a great park/fanbase to pitch to him and, oh yeah, boatloads of money. So sure, they'll be in the mix of legitimate suitors -- but there's no sense in calling anyone a front-runner when free agency hasn't even begun.

Is Oakland's starting pitching going to be a problem going forward (specifically into next season)?
Steve Adams
4:35
They'll need to add some arms, especially with Manaea out. I assume they'll sign at least one arm, trade for at least one as well. They should have Cotton, Puk and others coming back over the course of the season, but they'll need to supplement all the same.
Reds Fred
4:35
If made available, would the Giants or Rockies be interested in Hamilton for salary relief?
Steve Adams
4:35
If the Reds want the salary relief they can just non-tender Billy. He's not on a guaranteed deal for 2019.

No love for me, huh?  I would give the nod to Degrom as well, but unanimously??
Steve Adams
4:38
I've trumpeted Max as the best starter in the game at times in the past, but he's been outperformed by deGrom in virtually every facet this season. You yourself say you'd vote deGrom... I think JDG's case is pretty definitive at this point.

Did Palka just fall through the cracks in Minn, is he legit?
Steve Adams
4:39
He didn't fall through the cracks. The Twins saw a strikeout-prone slugger who doesn't walk much and can't get on base. That's exactly what he's been in Chicago. I don't think he's really very good -- .294 OBP -- so it feels weird to call him "legit," but I'd bet this is legitimately what he is, yes.

Who is the dude at the top of your front page? It looks like Chris Taylor.
Steve Adams
4:40
Ha, we've heard that before. It's a generic image.
I agree it does kind of look like Taylor though.
Ramón Laureano
4:40
Am I for real? If so, why was I never a highly touted prospect?
Steve Adams
4:42
There are dozens of great players throughout the league who were never touted as Top 100 prospects. Jose Altuve was never on Baseball America's Top 100. Mookie Betts barely cracked top prospect lists, etc. Laureano K's too much to sustain this type of average/OBP, but even when that regresses he's going to be a plus defender with good baserunning and some power
4:43
He looks like a long-term piece there.

Do you think Tampa Bay's opener success is a one-year wonder? Or do you think they can continue having the opener practice in future years?
Steve Adams
4:46
I thought people made too much of them jettisoning Dickerson, Odorizzi and Longoria in the first place, though they've been better than I thought.

There's tons of young talent on that club, though, and I think they'll probably continue using the strategy with success next year. They're an interesting team to watch and better than most would give them credit for, but it's hard to predict that anyone can realistically duke it out with the Yankees and Red Sox.
