Steve Adams

Greetings all -- sorry for the delayed start. Giants announced a couple roster moves right as I was about to fire up and I opted to get them on the site first
Let's talk playoffs, offseason dealings, free agency and whatever else we darn well please.

With the recent injuries to Carlos Rodon, what are the odds he accepts the QO?
Steve Adams
2:30
He has to at least consider it, but it depends somewhat on his goals, too. If Rodon wants a five-year deal or something, the best path to that is probably accepting, hoping for a similarly excellent 2022 season and going back to the market. If he's content taking a shorter-term deal (with a higher annual rate) -- I think he could probably get three years this winter even with the injury troubles.

That's not the numerical odds you were hoping for, but there's no great way to set odds on that sort of thing since it boils down so much to the individual's preference and risk tolerance.

What do you see the Mets doing FO-wise?
Steve Adams
2:30
I'd QO both Conforto and Syndergaard, and I expect they'll do that.
Schwarber
2:30
Do you see Boston making an offer to for Schwarber to stay? If so, where would he play?
Steve Adams
2:31
Martinez will opt out of his contract, so if they prefer Schwarber they could just sign him to DH and play some occasional 1B/LF

The Cubs have only 40 million committed next year. Should they go after a premium FA like Correa and start the second core?
Steve Adams
2:33
What they will and what I think they should do probably don't align. I think they should try to piece things back together quickly. Whether that starts by doling out $200MM+ for Correa or Seager or something can be debated, but I ultimately think they'll have a more measured offseason that their fans find disappointing. Nothing Ricketts and Hoyer have done/said in recent months/years really sets the stage for any sort of big-name splashes in free agency.

Will Cleveland be able to extend Jose?
Steve Adams
2:34
He already took one club friendly deal and now has tons of financial security. They couldn't extend Lindor, and I doubt ownership spends to extend Ramirez. He'll probably be traded at some point before Opening Day 2023.
Rays
2:34
Pretty good debut from Baz last night! He's on the playoff roster right? Also is Kitterage going to be back in time for postseason? Thanks!
Steve Adams
2:35
Rays said at the time they put KIttredge on the IL they feel he'll be back quickly. Baz looked electric. I'm sure they'll get him on the postseason roster. All they need to do is basically pitch him to the commissioner's office as a replacement for anyone who's on the IL now. They could say he's Archer's replacement or something and get him on. Teams do it every year with non-40-man players who were in the org on Sept. 1.

2:36
What teams do you see as next years Seattle or San Francisco? Teams who overachieved
Steve Adams
2:37
Most of the AL Central. The Nats and Marlins, too. Doubt they'll get any love heading into the year, but the Marlins' young group of pitchers is impressive and they're going to get some young catching or CF help this winter on the trade market. Nats aren't going to go into a lengthy rebuild, so they'll probably spend some and exceed expectations next year.

Waino has announced his intention to play another year. What’s his contract look like? Over/under $10 million?
Steve Adams
2:38
I'd say he's earned a better salary than $10MM, but maybe he'll give them a break. If I'm arbitrarily putting a guess out on the spot, I'll say one year, $12MM.
Geoff
2:38
Padres recent spiral has been really sad to watch. If they don't make the postseason what do you think will happen? Rumors are a lot of changes are coming...
Steve Adams
2:39
Tingler and the majority of the coaching staff go, most likely.
JDM Opt Out
2:39
Does JDM only opt out if the NL adopts the DH, or will he opt out regardless?
Steve Adams
2:41
He has a year and $19.375MM to go. His bat has dropped off since the first few months, but he doesn't need a huge offer to top what's left on his deal. Brantley got 2/32 this winter at the same age, more or less, and he has nowhere near JDM's power.

Twins, Mariners, Red Sox, Rays, Rangers ... plenty of clubs I can see spending on a DH this winter. And yeah, NL DH would open up a lot more landing spots.
Hmm
2:42
Of the big SS/2B market, who gets the lowest AAV and length of contract? Why?
Steve Adams
2:42
Semien probably takes the shortest deal just because he's so much older than the rest of the group.
Dave
2:43
If the Phillies don’t make the playoffs, they’ll have squandered theoretically the best three years of Harper’s contract. What are the odds that both parties admit this isn’t working out and explore a trade? Would
Steve Adams
2:43
Harper is still only 29 next season. They're not exploring a trade.
Jesus Sanchez
2:43
How about that catch last night?
Steve Adams
2:44
Glad he didn't break a finger! Always something new and fun on the nightly highlight reel
Royals Ponderer
2:44
With Witt coming up soon and Nicky Lopez having a career year, what sort of value does Lopez have as far as a trade?  Young promising relief pitcher with at least two years of control value?  What about a projected 4th or 5th starter?
Steve Adams
2:46
Dayton Moore said either this morning or yesterday evening (need to look at the timestamp) on MLB Network Radio he expects Lopez, Merrifield, Mondesi and Witt Jr. all in the lineup nearly everyday next year.

Lopez has had a nice season and would have trade value, but the Royals aren't moving him. I can't really even think of the last time they traded a homegrown, established player with several years of control remaining in order to open space for a prospect. It's not really how they operate.
Emily Frolic
2:47
Bryce Harper is the answer and not the problem for Phil. They need to build better around him.
Steve Adams
2:47
I agree with this.

2:49
Do you think the Dodgers will resign Scherzer
Steve Adams
2:49
They'll be my pick to re-sign him, probably, just because they won't bat an eye at the huge AAV he'll require and he's obviously already enjoying it there and dominating for them.
Fair Deal Dean
2:49
White Sox trade Eloy Jimenez this winter, true or false?
Steve Adams
2:49
False
Padres
2:50
Think Bochy would return when/if Tingler is fired? I’ve heard he wanted just this season off and would make a determination from there.
Steve Adams
2:51
I'm sure they'll talk to him. I saw the report out of the SDUT linking them to Bochy as well. After struggling with two rookie managers, it'd be odd if they went that route again. More likely they talk to several experienced managers who they feel will handle this sort of late-season pressure better.

Do Flaherty and Dak slot in as late inning relief if they make it back this season?
Steve Adams
2:53
I don't see how either Flaherty or Hudson could really work in five-plus inning stints, so I expect bullpen roles yeah. Doesn't necessarily need to be late-inning. Could work as an opener. Could be a scheduled 3-inning guy behind an opener. Could just work multiple innings in middle relief if a game is close. The Cardinals themselves are still figuring this very question out. But yes to the general concept of them working shorter stints than we're accustomed to seeing.
