Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/22/20
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams

Final chat of the regular season! ...That's weird.
We'll get going in one minute. I foolishly did not refill my water prior to kicking this thing off. Feel free to start firing away with questions
2:05
Ok here we go
Ok

Is Hunter Pence a potential managerial candidate?
Steve Adams
2:07
I don't see why, given his ability to connect with players, he wouldn't be given a chance to eventually land in a big league dugout if he wanted to go that route. He owns a coffee shop/board game cafe as well though (which is so awesome), so maybe he has some other ideas in mind post-playing.
Reds activated Sonny from the IL and DFA'ed Nate Jones just now

Who is AL mvp?
Steve Adams
2:08
In a 60-game season, the final week is a whole lot more crucial to that debate than usual. I don't think there's anyone who is so far out front that they couldn't tank their chances if they go 2-for-25 this week or something.

Who would be your Comeback Players of the Year? Carrasco and Bard? Salvador Pérez and Darin Ruf?
Steve Adams
2:11
Carrasco won it last year already! I'd have a hard time not going with Bard in the National League. Tougher call in the AL ... I don't want to downplay Salvy's season or anything, but it's not that uncommon for a good player to come back from TJ and be good again (granted he's been on another level).

I tend to think more of guys whose careers were on the ropes. Greg Holland? I'm probably blanking on someone obvious, so shout some names out if you like

Hey Steve, if the yankees let go of paxton do they sign bauer in the offseason
Steve Adams
2:13
That's not really an if/then situation. They probably WILL let Paxton go. Bauer will sign with the highest bidder. His recent comments about being open to a multi-year deal quite surprised me, for what it's worth.

I won't get much for Bryant this winter, will I?
Steve Adams
2:13
Nope, but no guarantee they trade him, either.

Could we see Dave Dombrowski headed to Angels?
Steve Adams
2:14
Seems like that is a viable possibility based on recent reporting from the L.A. Times and The Athletic, yeah. We'll have something on the site about that very shortly.
Comeback Player
2:14
Wil Myers
Steve Adams
2:15
I think Bard should have it locked down in the NL. Nice year for Myers, but Bard pretty much went eight years between big league stints

Do you think Freeman and Max Fried have a shot at NL MVP & Cy Young awaif not who would you choose?
Steve Adams
2:19
Yeah, I think both have legitimate chances. The NL Cy Young race is extra packed with plausible options, so again, we'll see who really pitches well in the final week.

I think Fried's brief IL stint might cost him in the end; he's at 55 IP right now, where Darvish (69), deGrom (63), Bauer (65) and Lamet (65.1) are all higher. When things are this close, those extra few innings matter.

Freeman has been the best non-Soto hitter in the NL and has played 14 more games than Soto... he's got a better shot at the hardware than Fried. It'll probably come down to whether voters give a nod to someone like Tatis or Betts for having far more defensive/baserunning value.
2:20
I don't think there's a wrong answer there in NL MVP voting, and I don't think it's worth getting worked up over, but obviously you'll have Dodgers, Padres and Braves fans alike calling for blood depending on who gets the nod. Yay social media!

Is Yadi a first ballot Hall of Famer?
Steve Adams
2:20
I think he will get in first ballot.
Chris
2:22
With Luis roberts falling apart this month, is Kyle Lewis now the easy rookie of the year winner?
Steve Adams
2:22
I think it'll go to Lewis, yeah. His own teammate should get some love, too. Justus Sheffield has been awesome after a couple poor starts this year and suddenly has a real nice looking season line on his hands.
Dan
2:22
Comeback player of the year, AL, Trevor Rosenthal?
Steve Adams
2:23
I started typing him before Holland, but hard when he was traded to the NL half through, ha.
C. Duda
2:23
Where do you see Kyle Tucker in the future? All star or solid regular?
Steve Adams
2:24
I expect him to make at least one in his career -- probably multiple. Dude can hit.

2:25
What are the odds that the Mariners catch the Blue Jays for a wildcard spot?
Steve Adams
2:26
FanGraphs has them at one percent... insert Lloyd Christmas GIF!
First Ballot Yadi?
2:26
Really?  I say he makes it, but not after a few years.  Defensive value is one thing, being a decent to ok hitter a few years of that is another
Steve Adams
2:28
I said I think he'll get in. If I'm being honest, he hasn't done enough offensively for me, but the narrative around him as the greatest defensive catcher of our generation, the two rings (at least) and the big body of postseason work will all get him in there.

How is Devin Williams flying so under the radar? He is the best reliever this season.
Steve Adams
2:29
I guess I don't think he's flying under the radar? I spend a lot more time geeking out to baseball content than most people, obviously, but I've seen him getting plenty of love at MLB.com, FanGraphs, etc. etc.

For the teams that miss out on JTR this winter, who is the next best option?
Steve Adams
2:30
There's no one close. James McCann?

Is the DH here to stay?
Steve Adams
2:30
Probably
