Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/5/17
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
3:20
A chat shall be had, and all shall be merry. Huzzah and hoorah. Let's begin.
3:21
(Also apologies on the late start -- I'll go past the usual stopping point to compensate)
Derek Holland
3:21
Am I going back to rangers?
Steve Adams
3:22
I don't know that any contending team is going to add Holland and give him a start. If you're in a tight race for a Wild Card spot, he hasn't demonstrated that he's the type of guy you want on the mound. Maybe as a lefty reliever I guess.
Chandler
3:22
Does the addition of Verlander into the Astros' pitching staff make them favorites in the AL?
Steve Adams
3:22
They were already the favorites in the AL.
Travis
3:23
True or False: The Angels way to a wildcard and J-Up opts in
Steve Adams
3:24
The Wild Card race is so close that damn near anything could feasibly happen without coming as a surprise. I think Upton still opts out, though.
Guy with questions
3:24
Do the Cardinals make the playoffs? If no, what do they need to get better?
Steve Adams
3:27
I don't think they're getting in, no. There are tons of different routes they could go for improvement ... I'd shore up the OF defense and add some mid-tier arm to the rotation with Lynn departing. I also don't really love DeJong at SS, but I'm guessing they're not going to be looking for upgrades there.
Chris Martin
3:27
Dodgers or Nationals...who do you think is better?
Steve Adams
3:28
I don't think there's a better overall team than the Dodgers, looking at the entire 25-man/40-man roster. Doesn't mean the Nats can't beat them in a 7-game series though

3:28
Has Kluber passed Sale in Cy Young race?  Or is it still Sale hands-down like it looked a month ago?
Steve Adams
3:29
My imaginary vote goes to Sale. Still has 21 more innings thrown, more K's
Pete
3:29
Would Jeffery Todd pass through waivers or would he be claimed?
Steve Adams
3:29
I think Fangraphs claimed him but we pulled him off waivers.
Reeses Pieces
3:30
Surprised the A's didnt trade Meowrie? Think he'll be traded in a winter deal or do the A's keep him and let Barreto get more at bats in AAA?
Steve Adams
3:31
I'm surprised he wasn't moved in July. He could've made a whole bunch of teams better. It's puzzling to me that seemingly no one stepped up with a decent offer. Once it gets to August, it's not a shock to see any one player not get moved; some team probably claimed him to block a rival, offered nothing, and he was pulled back because the option year clearly has surplus value
Jim
3:32
Do you think the Phillies will make a big acquisition this off-season or is it still too early?
Steve Adams
3:33
I think they need to see a full year of Nola, Herrera, JP Crawford, Rhys Hoskins, Scott Kingery, etc. all performing well together to convince them that the time is right to start going bigger in free agency. I think they'll make some more one-year pickups... maybe a two- or three-year deal for a veteran innings eater to step into the Hellickson role from 2016-17, but nothing on a Darvish or Arrieta level, for instance.
Hector
3:33
Because Odor is playing so poor, do you think Profar is a Ranger next season?
Steve Adams
3:34
They gave Odor a six-year deal. I think Profar is done as a Ranger.
Brad
3:34
Who do you think matches up best for a Brad Hand trade in the offseason?
Steve Adams
3:35
I don't think there's any one team that is especially well positioned. He'd make all 29 other clubs better, and every team is going to be looking for bullpen help this winter. He won't go to a team like Detroit, Cincinnati, Oakland, etc. (i.e. rebuilding teams) but there could be 20 teams kicking the tires on him again.

3:36
From the current system, I'd rather have a 3-game Wild Card series, 7 game Division Series, and 9 game World Series. Thoughts?
Steve Adams
3:36
I don't think MLB would love the notion of pushing the World Series back into November on a regular basis, and that schedule almost certainly would require doing so. A seven-game series is fine for the LCS and WS... I do like the idea of a three-game Wild Card series, though.
Mark Shapiro
3:37
What kind of haul do you think I can get for Josh Donaldson in the winter?  I am ready to deal.
Steve Adams
3:38
Could get a huge one, but if the Jays were willing to trade pieces that are going to help them next year, some of Donaldson, Happ, Pearce, etc. would already be gone. I don't think Donaldson moves at all, unless the Jays are out of it next July.
Chris
3:38
would it be realistic for Atlanta to get Stanton and realmuto for 5 of the braves prospects of the marlins choosing not names acuna, albies or Newcomb
Steve Adams
3:38
Nope.
3:40
The whole "you can have anyone just not these group of top-regarded young players" thing is usually a nonstarter in these types of questions.

I mean, if the Braves took the whole Stanton contract, I'm sure the two sides could eventually work something out, but that's not realistic, and the mechanics of that intra-division blockbuster would be a nightmare to sort out
Guatemala_Royals
3:40
Hello from Guatemala. Do you think the Royals make it to the playoffs?? Do you think they sign Moose in the offseason??
Thanks for the chats!!
Steve Adams
3:41
Buenas tardes. I don't think KC's getting in, nor do I envision them re-signing Moustakas -- sorry to dash your hopes! I think the Royals look lined up for a mini-rebuild. They're definitely in a transitional state
Gio Stanton
3:41
Should I opt out from my contract when I get a shot?
Steve Adams
3:42
There's no good way to answer that question right now; no telling what health issues will or won't arise, how well he'll continue hitting, etc. There are dozens of factors that could impact that decision
Cub Fan, Bud Man
3:43
Assuming the Cubs make it to the playoffs, do they go Arietta, Lester, Hendricks?
Steve Adams
3:45
If Arrieta's leg injury proves to be minor, I'd expect him, Lester and Quintana to get the top three starts. Arrieta is getting an MRI today, for what it's worth.

I know Hendricks has a shinier ERA than Q, but Quintana misses more bats and, historically, has been stingier with home runs.
Indians activate Danny Salazar, recall Tyler Naquin
Alek
3:45
What kind of contract do you expect Jose Bautista to get this winter?
Steve Adams
3:46
Another one-year deal with a lot crappier base salary this time around. He's been terrible this year outside of one torrid month (May). One year and something like $5-8MM with a bunch of incentives.
