Hello and thanks for being here!

Here are the DTs I think could go day 1:
Caleb Banks, Florida
Kayden McDonald, Ohio State
Peter Woods, Clemson
Lee Hunter, Texas Tech

Fringe guy who could also make it
Christen Miller, Georgia

I do see this as a deeper WR draft class than DT, but there are some good DTs to watch in this class.

Are you surprised Terrell Austin is unemployed? I am not.

Teryl Austin actually signed with the Cardinals today. Which isn't a shock to me at all. Steelers finished in the top 10 in points allowed in 3 of his 4 years as a defensive coordinator. Maybe he's not a guru, but he's an experienced coach who's coached some good units.

What are the chances the Steelers will move up in the draft to snag one of the top 3 or 4 receivers? Is there a big drop off after those players or can they get a high quality WR at 21?

To me, this is the big question of the draft. I think the Steelers are exploring both trading up and trading back.

Daniel Jeremiah seems to think there's better value in trading back because he sees a strong bank of players available in the second and third rounds and that maximizing the shots there would be a great value.

But I also think the Steelers would be wise to capitalize on the top of a strong WR draft class. Makai Lemon and Jordyn Tyson look like star players in short order and either one I think would be worth giving up one of those later 3rd round picks to get.

Beyond D.K. Metcalf the Steelers' cupboard is bare at wide receiver, as we all know. Would you fill it by signing two free agents and drafting one wide receiver? Or the other way around, i.e., sign one free agent and draft two wide receivers? Or something else?
Christopher Carter

The latter.

I like this receiver draft class to the point that I think it should be a lock for the team to draft -- at least -- two receivers this year. And they should keep the door open for a third.

Two of those picks should be made within the top 100 picks. There are a mix of complete receivers, route runners, YAC monsters and combat catch guys. Get your mix of who you want, then if you're sitting there late on day 3 and a guy you like is still around, nab him too.

Don't give up draft picks AND significant cap space for multiple receivers when you can get high level receivers for just the draft picks on a rookie deals for 4-5 years.

Would you make any major changes to the historically bad defense, such as getting rid of Cam or TJ or another significant overhaul?
Christopher Carter

So, I think what's funny to make fun of the defense was that when Tomlin and Thornhill talked about the defense being historic is that they weren't.

But they also weren't historically bad, more like historically average. Which just feels historically bad to Steelers fans because they're used to a top 10 defense.

The Steelers' defense finished 17th in points allowed last season. But that was just the second time since 2019 that they hadn't finished in the top 10 -- which is when you're a very good defense. They were that from 2022-2024.

Elite defenses to me are usually in the top 5, which they did in 2019 and 2020. They haven't been that for some years.

I don't think this defense needs an overhaul. But they do need better investment at the safety position, another legitimate defensive tackle and a consisently good CB2 alongside Porter.

My wish list for the Steelers at 21 is Jordan Tyson, Olaivavega Ionne, Dillion Thieneman, and Caleb Banks. If all four were available, my choice would be Banks because defense is a lot easier to play with studs on the DL. Of those four, who would you take?
Christopher Carter
12:26
I mean, if all four of these prospects are available, the Steelers would have to be excited. If Omar Khan got this, I might even look into trading back a couple picks if there's a player he liked specifically in this group and felt the teams behind them wouldn't take them.

Of this group, Jordyn Tyson is highest on my big board so he'd be my default pik. But I agree with you that Banks would be NASTY up front. Wouldn't argue with him as a first round pick at all.
12:27
Alright, I've got to get on some of the other projects I've got stewing.

Thanks everyone for participating in the chat! See you all next week after the free agency madness has begun!
