Good morning!

Who is the one player another AFC North team drafted that the Steelers are going to wish they had been able to draft instead? Is there a guy who is thinking "I'm going to make Pittsburgh regret passing on me"?
Christopher Carter
10:45
Malaki Starks and Mike Green on the Ravens could be a nasty pair. They are both athletic and I had high marks on both. Granted, I had Harmon ranked above both, too.

Chris the Pirates have a playoff caliber pitching staff - with so many teams making the playoffs that’s not saying much. But, how do they EVER make the playoffs with minor league hitters? 2nd question, how do they acquire major league hitters when the owner will not spend money? I’ve been a Buc fan since 1970 and this is the worst I’ve ever seen the organization. I have no hope of ever seeing a winning Pirates team again in my life. Am I wrong?
Christopher Carter
10:47
NOAH HILES, HELLLLLPPPPP

But seriously, I'm not a baseball expert
but I have a hard time seeing the Pirates making any splash until they gut a lot of their decision makers to build a better organization inside and out. They've made the playoffs 3 times since I was 4 years old. And nothing is on the upswing.

Chris, can't understand why fans want to trade tj watt, if they watched the game,  he was double teamed, moving him around should have happened LAST, year, your opinion?
Christopher Carter
10:48
Agreed. That's also the leading topic of today's North Shore Drive podcast! Should the Bengals move on from Joe Burrow because he missed the playoffs for the third time in his five years in the league? NO!

10:48
Hi Chris.  Does Mr. Rooney alone determine Mike Tomlin's fate or are others in the organization involved with the decision of renewing/extending his contract?
Christopher Carter
10:48
I don't know for certain that hierarchy but I believe that's between Mr. Rooney and MAYBE Omar Khan if anyone else.

There’s a reason that Tomlin kept Mason all those years as a backup for a HOFer. Rudolph was challenged by many other QBs during those years and Tomlin stuck with him. He’s a positive, skilled, steady, leader and the players respect and perform for him. I’m sure it’s not easy coming in off the sidelines at a moment’s notice and taking charge. Mason excelled at that. You know what you get consistently. He knows the Steeler plays backward, forward and caddywhompus even with the AS twist.
Who’s your backup at the newspaper?
Christopher Carter

I've been blessed with amazing partners when I was on the Pitt beat. Noah Hiles is crushing it on Pirates and Stephen Thompson and Abby Schnable are going to great things covering Pitt. Any of them.

Do the Steelers open at home against the Packers or Browns ? Is it Aaron vs his old team or Kenny vs his old team. BTW, it's on Sunday night football. Your thoughts ?
Christopher Carter
10:51
Packers makes sense but holding up both of these is the fact that we don't know for sure if either of them will be starting! Rodgers hasn't signed and Pickett has to win the job!

Hi Chris! Thanks for the chats! When the Steelers park a house (Black) in the middle of their defensive line, will that effectively counter the 'tush push?' I can't wait to see it!
Christopher Carter
10:51
Hi! Thanks for joining! Tush-push countering requires timing as much as brute strength. He and Harmon are some big, strong dudes. So maybe!

Why is it so many  people are negative about Broderick Jones at left tackle his  normal position, he played right tackle because Dan Moore couldn't. I do think he did the best he could being out of position.
Christopher Carter
10:52
I agree here Stan. I think Broderick Jones can surprise people this year. He's had some rough reps but he's also growing and the youngest of the new OL they've added. I'd give him time.

How did Will Howard look on the blocking sled at rookie camp?!

10:52
Do you think the OL could be better if they replaced Pat Meyer?
Christopher Carter
10:53
Tough to say. I think Meyer did a good job with Frazier and McCormick last year and considering they lost both Fautanu and Daniels, I'd be willing to give him another shot. It took time for the OL of the 2010s to develop. That might just be the case here.

Hi Chris, I'm very happy to see you on the Steelers' beat and doing chats. You are a hard-working and talented individual. You seem very plugged in, so do you have any behind the scene insight as to what the Steelers schedule is going to look like?
Christopher Carter
10:57
Thank you for the compliments!

I don't have schedule sources like that just yet, but I hope to develop some soon!

But I'll offer this tidbit: last year, the NFL had 9 teams play international games. Of those teams, 7 of them had home games the week after and the two that didn't either played in London the following week (Jaguars) or had a bye (Bears).

Since we know the Steelers don't have any other international games, I'd say it's likely to expect a week 5 home game or bye week.

Also, of those 9 teams, 6 of them had home games the week before their international game, while one (Vikings) had an away agame, and two teams had no game since their international game was a season opener (Eagles/Packers).

That tells me it's likely the Steelers have a week 3 home game, and potentially a week 5 home game or bye week. Since week 4 is technically a home game in Ireland, I would expect them to maybe not have a home season opener. But who knows!

GM Chris.  Assuming Rodgers signs with the Steelers - wouldn't the deal have to require his participation in all off-season camps?  How else would the Steelers convince the fans and themselves that their goal is to win if the new QB on a one-year deal isn't expected to get acclimated to his new team and work with teammates?
Christopher Carter
10:57
GM!

I think if he signs after the minicamp it wouldn't impact his payment. As far as expectations, I agree that they should want their new starting QB to get as much work with the team as possible.

Hi Christopher. Do you know if any 5'10" receivers have been successful as outside receivers?
Christopher Carter
10:58
Antonio Brown was 5'10" so yes!

What is your opinion of the international NFL games? With the international schedule expanding into many different parts of the world, does there come a point where they become a distraction to the teams? Frankly, I often forget they are on Sunday mornings.
Christopher Carter
11:02
I'm not as big on them as others. Personally I get the want to expand the game. But I think it's still expanding pretty well with 1PM kickoffs at their natural home stadiums!

Hello Chris, I have been a fan of the Pgh Post Gazette sports staff since 1991. My observation is that the Steelers organization as a whole has taken a down turn since Art Rooney the son took over. Which poses the question: if Dan the father was still alive and ran the organization, would he had let Mike Tomlin go after so many failures in the post season? And I am talking about post 2010 when they last appeared in the SP.
Christopher Carter
11:03
Considering Dan Rooney extended Bill Cowher after going 7-9, 6-10, 9-7 and missing the playoffs all three seasons, yes.

I think the biggest thing with deciding to keep a coach or not is whether the team and their leaders still believe in them. Unless Heyward/Watt turn on Tomlin, I don't see him leaving.

Chris, first time I can remember steelers having very talented udfa to this caliber. Castro, roc Taylor, and big TE/FB. Can you see more than 1 making the 53 this year?
Christopher Carter
11:04
I like the chances of Thomas-Jones, Castro and Taylor. Does look like an interesting class!

11:04
What are your expectations, career-wise, for QB Will Howard? To me the Big Ben comparisons are wishful thinking, but maybe he could be a serviceable starter on a very good team?
Christopher Carter
11:05
I think he can develop into a good player along the lines of Mason Rudolph. What will determine how far he goes is how fast he gets there. If we see him playing at Rudolph's level in this camp, then maybe we can talk about a further ascension.

But let's take one step at a time.

There were some grumblings that Polamalu wanted to come back here as a safeties coach and Tomlin supposedly said something akin to ‘we want to focus on the offense’. Very rough paraphrase. Are there any legs to that at all that you know of?
Christopher Carter
11:05
I hadn't heard that.

I’ve been reading a lot of negative comments on the Pickens trade from fans who don’t like the trade. If they held onto him, they’d have gotten a 3rd round comp pick. First, they’d only get a comp pick if they lost more free agents than they signed. Second, if Pickens had gotten injured, or had a bad year, he likely gets a lesser offer and they get a lower comp pick. Third, if they did get a comp pick for Pickens, the Steelers wouldn’t get it until 2027 draft.
Christopher Carter
11:06
All valid points! It's not a guarantee the Cowboys get a 3rd round comp pick for him while the Steelers do make sure they get that pick in 2026 when they'll be looking to trade up for a QB!

Read comments from fans that the Steelers should have franchise tagged and traded Pickens: If they could only get a 3rd for a player on a rookie contract, why would a team trade more for a player under the tag with a much higher salary?
