How did Darnell Washington look at mini-camp and could he have an expanded role on O this year?
Christopher Carter
3:06
He looked sharper. Last play of minicamp was a nice touchdown snag by him from Will Howard. He also told us he's lining up in several spots he never did in the past two years. Could be a coming out year for him.

I don't understand that the steelers are committed to the run Gane but won't use a FB. Please explain.

Fullbacks are all but exctinct in today's NFL. Just structurally, people find extra tight ends or linemen to be more helpful.

And thanks for doing these chats, your answers are always well thought out!

Hey Chris, good afternoon!  Why do you think so many yinzer fans believe all those duplicitous
clickbait websites they see on FB or as links to other sites?  You know the ones such as: "Aaron Rodgers demands Steelers to trade for his buddy Lazard" or "Steelers looking to trade Watt and get a massive return" and then you click on it and it's some hack writer trying to generate traffic.  I haven't clicked on thoese links for a long time, but then I come to the chats and see other people COMMENTING ON THOSE FAKE RUMORS, and it's crazy to me that there are people who will believe anything-and get really upset at Rodgers for demanding to trade for his friend.  Why can't they understand that they are being baited?

Good afternoon!

I urge people to remember, the term fan come from "fanatic," which usually leads to being overly excited about something they're fixated on. So hey, it's the dead season of NFL news and people need their fix. I get it. But I agree that I wish people would believe it a lot less!

I'm sorry I didn't get to ask this last week on June 12, the second anniversary of Stan Savran's passing.  Still, better late than never.  Do you have any memories to share?  While I do appreciate the P-G sports staff and subscribe because of you all, I still miss Stan.

The biggest thing with Stan was that he was always cordial, nice and locked in. Whenever I listened to him, I felt like he just got "it" when it came to sports coverage. Objective, still fun, and accurate.

I was blessed to be called into his radio show for a guest appearance during the Pitt March Madness run a few years back. Felt like I really made it when that happened. RIP Stan. Love the show. Miss the show.

Do think there will be any changes schematically to the defense? I would love to see them be more multiple and exotic with all the different skill sets and body types they have in the back eight. Maybe the lack of a top slot corner keeps that from happening?
Christopher Carter
3:12
I do. But I think it MUST be compounded with better run defense. If that happens, it opens up just how much more they can mix things up with different looks. When you're sitting in second or third down with only 4 or less yards to defend, you have to be mindful of the run and pass so much that it limts the aggressive work you'd want to do schematically.

That's why Harmon was so important to get. If they can get back to being a very good run defense, a lot of those machinations will open back up.

Hey Chris,  is it a sign of team weakness or Harmon's strength that he has already been anointed a starter?  If they have failed until now to draft or trade for a starting DL with the recent DL picks, why should we think they can draft the right QB next year?
Christopher Carter
3:12
I think it's both. Certainly aren't strong at DL before his arrival outside of Heyward and the young Benton. But we also know that even with depleted units, the Steelers don't like to start rookies too often.
3:13
Think back to Joey Porter Jr.'s arrival when he sat behind Levi Wallace. Or Broderick Jones behind Chukwuma Okorafor. I think it speaks well for Harmon. But then again, not sure if there was going to be real competition there anyway.

Are any of the free agent cb's out there " Alexander from G-bay" or a trade for Ramsey a possibility? And how about A.Cooper or Allen at wr? Is Cooper fallin off a cliff or asking for too much money? Thanks
Christopher Carter
3:17
Mike Hilton's still available if they want an older slot option. But I think outside CB is tough to sell. I like Ramsey but the Steelers signed Slay for $10M. I think they feel fine there, even if we think it's misplaced confidence.

I think Cooper could be interesting. But he has to be open to being WR2 with a short term deal  and the chance to be surpassed.

Chris, It's refreshing to have a columnist that tells it like it is ! Thank you

Hi there. I’ve noticed a trend that the Steelers don’t fire coaches, they usually hire a replacement a year or two early like when they brought in Canada and Austin. With the rumor being that Austin has one year left on his contract, did they just (re)hire his replacement in Gerald Alexander?
Christopher Carter
3:18
You know, I don't think you're that far off there. When I watch Gerald Alexander coach, I see a future DC in him. It's certainly a possibility.

Is A Rod a step up from Russ?
Christopher Carter
3:19
The main thing that could help there is if he uses the middle part of the field on intermediate passes. If he does that and limits turnovers, he's an upgrade.

I understand FBs are mostly outdated but the Ravens use one. I believe SF and GB recently used them. Successful teams. If going back to the run as an identity isn't a FB REALLY needed ?
Christopher Carter
3:21
Some teams do use fullbacks, but very rarely. The Eagles were a pretty good run team and they didn't really use one. And I'd also point out what makes the Ravens a good run team is having the most dynamic QB-RB running threat we may have ever seen more so than having a FB.

And hey, the Steelers do have FBs on the roster. But it's just a hard position to fit on the roster with all the other needs. Shoutout DJ Thomas-Jones though, thought he had a good OTAs and minicamp.
And with that, all the questions are answered. Thanks again everyone! I'll do this again next week!
