Christopher Carter's Steelers chat: 08.15.25

I wasn’t going to ask a Cam question but… sounds to me like this whole ‘I told them when I signed my deal and again in February’ is an excuse for wanting more money after just signing a new contract. If he wanted a prove it deal (as in I am still worth top dollar) then why sign a three year deal for less than he thought he would prove his worth?
Christopher Carter
11:27
I think he did that because--like the Steelers--he was also worried about getting injured again at 35 and not knowing how his body would react.

So now that he played a full 17-game season, he may be more confident in his body to take the wear and tear of an NFL season again.

Hey Chris I’m just wondering not hoping but what happens if or when DK gets injured.. will this be a repeat of last year when that nameless grey face WR they traded to the Cowboys got hurt
Christopher Carter
11:28
I do think that would be a big problem. The lack of an WR2 option is more important because of that rather than the idea of needing another threat to distract defenses from Metcalf.

Some national pundits reporting Steelers D looked bad against the bucs yesterday.  Baker tore them up
Christopher Carter
11:29
They won the 2-minute drill at the last second. But they also didn't take into account an obvious sack that would've set the drive back.

Hi Chris, always enjoy your chats! Rodgers apparently isn't getting an opportunity to work with his receivers during the preseason games. It usually takes time for the QB and receivers to get on the same page once the games begin, so should we expect a few mental mistakes or misreads during the first few games?
Christopher Carter
11:34
Hello! Glad you enjoy them!

I think those are things being ironed out in these practices too. Now for me, I believe in getting more work in. But I'm also not a professional coach or NFL player, so they may see it differently.

Misreads are going to happen, but maybe more work could help them comb out some more things. I do think that's a fair take in all this. I believe Rodgers and the Steelers just see that as less of an opportunity because all the defenses they face are running bland things right now and not what real defenses would do.

Could you explain the role Ramsey will play in the secondary? He is a great shut down corner, but has he always been an all-purpose tool like the Steelers are planning for him as far as moving him around the secondary?
Christopher Carter
11:35
Look at Ramsey as the CB1 who will primarily line up against the star WR but flex to the slot and move around the field for specific matchups/situations. He's lining up everywhere because they want teams to guess where he's at evey play.I think that could work in the Steelers' favor.

Are the Steelers disappointed at the DL line depth at this point? It seems like no one except the rookies are making an impression.
Christopher Carter
11:36
Daniel Ekuale has been good and Logan Lee's had some good days. I think they should feel good about their top 5: Heyward-Benton-Harmon-Ekuale-Black. That's some good depth if the rookies play like I've seen them practice.

Chris, you do phenomenal work with these chats. Thank you. I've watched Jalen Ramsey highlights from the past two years and he looks incredible! Do you think he still has what it takes to be a lockdown corner?
Christopher Carter
11:37
Thank you!

I think he can be! He's dynamic in how he flows around the secondary, takes on certain roles and knows how to fit different schemes all while being a hyper-athletic man coverage corner. There's a lot of HOF talent in him still.

What do you think about cutting Conner and using his money to pay Cam?
Christopher Carter
11:37
Not out of spite. Conner's actually had a good camp and with how much they'll want to use TEs they'll need a 4th so he'll fit there fine.

Hello, Mr. Carter, Thanks for all you and your colleagues do covering the Steelers. From what I’ve read and watched regarding the PG’s coverage, the CAIII injury is still an unknown factor. If this becomes a lengthy issue, will the FO possibly bringing in another WR or has a training camp candidate emerged to help soften the blow of losing CAIII?  If the FO does signs WR,  who ist he most likely candidate to get signed?
Christopher Carter
11:38
Hello!

I do think if they feel his injury will drag well into the season they'll sign someone else. Amari Cooper is just sitting right there. Would make a lot of sense.

Now that you've seen training camp, a preseason game and a joint scrimmage, on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the most) how active would GM Carter be in working the phones to try and bring in a WR2?
Christopher Carter
11:39
6 - I'd explore every opportunity but I'm not coughing up any day 1 or 2 picks for this upcoming draft unless the Steelers are getting a stud in their prime. Keep your eyes on the  ... uh ... potential franchise quarterback.

Hi Chris, In a backs and backers grudge match between yourself and Ray, who would emerge victorious? I don’t think I’d want to either one of you gentlemen on, but I’d send Batko home crying to his mama!
Christopher Carter
11:40
Ray's got me in size and played college ball. He's our James Harrison we're throwing out there to challenge all the other outlets. I could be Vince Williams though.

What is the rule with getting placed on IR and practicing in the season
Christopher Carter
11:42
Once on IR, a player must miss the next 4 games of practice. The team must then designate the player to return. After that, theey have a 21-day window for them to practice and return to the active roster. If the player does not return during thee 21-day window, they must go on IR for the rest of the season.

Chris, just got the NFL Ticket and believe the Steelers are going to sneak up on teams since the chemistry seems very good.  Your thoughts and thanks.
Christopher Carter
11:43
I loved the Sunday Ticket in the days when I didn't have to work on NFL Sundays. Just sitting there watching every game from the comfort of your home. Man, I miss it.

As far as chemistry, the Steelers are still developing theirs, but I do think they beat some of the really good teams on their schedule.

did the defense look as bad as has been reported in the joint practice yesterday
Christopher Carter
11:43
They lost thee 2-minute drill at the last second. I didn't think they looked horrible. They just couldn't really use their pass rush and were testing out several different zone coverages instead of playing how they would in a game.

Is it possible Mason is really good but has never been given a good shot at starting?
Christopher Carter
11:44
I think Mason would've caught on by now if he was a potential franchise guy. He's a good backup QB and can start in a pinch. But I think that's why he left town last year so he could see his potential. That didn't work out in Tennessee and he came right back. I think he's fine with his role.

Hey Again Chris, who do you think has to ball out this week if they have any shot of making the team? WR/DB possibly? Thanks.
Christopher Carter

Robert Woods, James Pierre, Max Hurleman, Roc Taylor, Beanie Bishop.
Friar Tuck
11:45
Hi Christopher. Great chats! Can/should we blame some of the offensive line problems on the   OL coach?
Christopher Carter
11:47
Pat Meyer and Mike Tomlin deserve some of the blame as I didn't buy into the whole keeping Broderick Jones at RT thing last year even if Dan Moore couldn't play RT.

But there's also the theory that was more a move to appease Omar Khan because Moore playing LT all those years is what got him that massive contract and now the Steelers a third round comp pick for next year.

But let's let Meyer work with the young guys for couple years before we hang that on him. It takes time for lines to come together.

Saw a laughable post online wondering if the Steelers could get a mid 1st round pick for Boswell🙄.  First they're not going to trade him and 2nd, NOBODY trades a 1st round pick for a kicker, right?
Christopher Carter
11:48
Maybe if Al Davis were still around. (I agree, that's insane lol)
11:50
That's all the questions! Whew! We cleared them all out this week. Ryan, this means I get the good parking spot this week, right?
11:51
Thanks everyone! Be sure to follow all our coverage from the stadium tomorrow! Got some preview stuff dropping later today too!
