I've had a list of things Rodgers would need for him toeven think about returning and step 1 is getting to the AFC championship game.

Step 2 would be making sure the offensive line does improve so he's not afraid of getting wrecked next year.

Step 3 would need to be not having a lot of turnover on the offensive side. Probably would want Arthur Smith back and similar talent group around him.

Not sure if it'll happen but I do think there's a chance for it.

looks like the circus is coming to town on Sunday.  Do you think we’ll get to see DoorDash Sanders play?
Christopher Carter
11:26
Is that what people are calling Shedeur Sanders these days or did you just make that up all on your own?

I doubt he plays unless Dillon Gabriel gets knocked out fo the game. And even then, meh.

Did the Browns gift wrap and put a bow on Flacco when they sent him to a division rival in desperate need of QB?
Christopher Carter
11:26
Said this earlier but I just did not get this trade at all. They helped out a divisional rival, lost their emergency QB, and didn't get much for it.

The total player salary cost of a single NFL play is around $263,000 dollars not including coaches and staff salaries. The reason I bring this up is that the people who manage and coach these teams know a lot more then the average fan, it is their profession. Do you ever get frustrated when fans think they know more than the professionals who run these teams?
Christopher Carter
11:29
Yes. I think people do not understand how DIFFICULT these jobs are. As in, the people doing this are among the best of the best of the best of the best of the best of the best of the best.

So when some of them stink in comparison to their contemporaries, I think people need to put into context that the level of competition is so high that there's not a legitimate comparsion to wonder if you can do your job, what can't they do theirs?
Also, whenever someone who appreciates my work and then says I should get into coaching, HAHAHAHA not doing that and get my head ripped off for calling play action and a player missed a block and now I'm the idiot play caller.

What is the earliest point in the season that any team has clinched the division?  I believe more in the Steelers propensity to collapse in the final third of the season than their ability to clinch the division at an unprecedented early point. Also, the Ratbirds will likely pull it together and have a late season surge.  But it makes for an interesting bit of fantasy doesn't it?
Christopher Carter
11:32
Did a quick google and week 11 is the fastest. Most recently it was the 2007 Patriots who did it. But the 2004 Eagles, 1997 49ers and 1985 Bears also did it.

Steelers need to build this lead right now and get a four-game advantage to give themselves a cushion for when they get to the hard part of their schedule and the Ravens' strength of opponent decreases.

If the NFL adds a 18th game and a 2nd bye week do you think it would add them in January or September or one at the beginning and one at end?
Christopher Carter
11:34
I think they'd push the season later. Just my opinion but they'd rather leave summer for summer and then lean into the late fall early winter months for extra game time.

Hi Chris,  Thanks for the chat!  We know CAII is out and maybe Skowronek is out too?  What is his status for Cleveland?
Christopher Carter
11:39
Hello and thanks for being here!

Not sure about Skowronek being an issue. He was limited early on with an illness but was a full-go yesterday. Should be fine.

Do you think the Steelers might be regretting not taking Jaxson Dart?
Christopher Carter
11:40
I think it's way too early to crown anybody anything. His win last night was impressive but it was also coming off 2 interceptions and being the only team to lose to the Saints just the week before. Let's see how he pans out.
Dr Sardonicus
11:40
Hi Chris!  I appreciate your chats!  The Steelers have signed a number of new people in the last few weeks.  Are there any we can look forward to seeing over the next 2 games?  Are there any you think can make a positive impact?
Christopher Carter
11:42
Nope. I don't expect Blackshear or Henderson to be active unless someone gets hurt.

I do think they need to get Jabrill Peppers back in the mix though.

Hi Chris!  I enjoyed Brian's article on Jonnu Smith's brother.  Was Jonnu's trade to the Steelers a happy coincidence, or was he trying to get closer to his brother?
Christopher Carter
11:43
Brian did an amazing job with that story. If you're reading this, go read that right now. But I think it was a happy coincidence. He can fly to here whenever he wants with his money.

Good morning Chris! I really enjoy your deep insight, especially on player perfomance. Do you feel the O-Line is starting to put it together, or was the game against the Vikings (particularly the run game) improved due to the extra blocker(s)?
Christopher Carter
11:44
Good morning! And I do think so. The Vikings have a talented front and for the Steelers to move them the way they did is encouraging. Extra blockers played a role, but that's fine too as the really good 2010s Steelers offensive lines had extra guys help out at times too.

With red zone TD efficiency rankings, do you need a first down inside the twenty?  Does it count if you get to the 19 on third down and immediately kick a field goal on fourth down?
Christopher Carter
11:45
As I understand it, you only need to get inside the 20 at any point for it to be a red zone possession. But I honestly hadn't considered the logic in that and that's a good question.

Hi, Chris. Everything about Cam Skateboo says Steeler guy. Do you know if he was even on our radar? It is really great watching a dude ball out, block, do anything it takes for the team. I wish Kaleb much good fortune and I hope he makes me forget Cam.
Christopher Carter
11:46
Hello!

I think Skatebo was less on people's radars because his usage in college football scared a lot of people that he would only be 2-3 years at best in the NFL. But hey, people said the same thing about Payton Wilson's knees, so everyone could've been wrong there.

When will the NFL start calling Philly for false starts on the tush push?  They do it a lot.
Christopher Carter
11:47
Apparently they won't, but they should. In general, OTs get away with false starts A LOT. I think if the Eagles weren't a top dog this play would've been shut down a lot sooner.
Takoma Tom

Good thing they didn’t trade for Tyreek Hill
Christopher Carter
11:48
Right?

I have nothing against KJ (#83 Pick), but was captivated by how well Skattebo played down the stretch and against Texas in the Peach bowl. He seems to be playing the same way with Giants the same (good) results as a rookie. Would he have been a better fit with the Steelers?
Christopher Carter
11:52
On Skattebo again, I think part of the question about him was longevity. I think he may have been a more ready right away type of player for the Steelers, but Johnson's measureables fit more of what they want long term as well.

Skattebo is 5-9 to Johnson's 6-1. Skattebo also ran a 4.65 to Johnson's 4.57 (a big difference) in the 40-yard dash. I'd give this time to play out.

Good morning CC. Based on the projected collision of Jones/Washington and Garrett … what should we reasonably expect from the Steelers offense this week?
Christopher Carter
11:55
Good morning! I think the Steelers can be an efficient offense IF Rodgers can pick at the soft spots of the Browns' defense: the dink and dunk and the perimeter.

If he hits his guys in those areas, the Steelers will set up more 3rd and shorts. Right now, the Steelers are the 2nd best team in the NFL in converting 3rd down when it's 3 yards or less.

They also rank 8th in red zone offense while the Browns rank last in red zone defense. Get some drives going and protect the football. I think this offense can score 24 this week. But I also think the defense will get its first defensive touchdown of the season this week too.

Chris what do you think about the Season Derrick Harmon is having i know he was injured but he looked good against the Patriots and the Vikings Go Steelers
Christopher Carter
11:56
Man, Harmon is looking really good. He's winning with power and leverage already and that's a very good sign. It's way too early to determine anything for sure, but you can't help but be encouraged by his start.
rJ
11:56
People should not talk about trading Highsmith. Nevermind possible injures, most big plays happen when Watt is tired and on the bench.
Christopher Carter
11:56
Agreed. They finally have depth at a very crucial position. Don't throw that away.

It’s been decades since mlb introduced analytics to the game. Yet in football, I still don’t ever hear of it being used. Surely a super computer at Carnegie Mellon can spit out stats that give the Steelers an upper hand at determining offensive tendencies, or training qbs to know which check down is most appropriate. Why hasn’t more been written about the topic?
Christopher Carter
11:58
So uh, there are a TON of analytics in football. The Steelers even have their own analytics guys at each game. I first got to interact with them at the Pickett pro day when I was covering Pitt and I got to saw them evaluating Pitt players. Check here if you want some fan access to just some of the stuff the NFL has on analytics. https://pro.nfl.com/nflpro
