Christopher Carter's Steelers chat: 10.17.25

Dread it, run from it, destiny arrives, all the same. Only it's Tomlin explaining losing to an MVP QB in the first round and not Thanos holding a power stone.
Coach T
11:47
CC, will the stench of this performance ignore all meteorological models, defy the jet stream, and traverse up the Ohio before settling in and causing continued discomfort along the Mon and North Shore?
Christopher Carter
11:47
Guys, Tomlin is in the chat and listening. Get him.
Jalen
11:47
CC, who do you reckon first said: "Some days you eat the bear, and some days the bear eats you"? Sorry to get all philosophical on you, but we DBs find ourselves searching for meaning in the ole' world today.
Christopher Carter
11:50
That's exactly what it is for defensive backs. One minute you're shutting down receivers, next you're getting cooked and griddy'd on.

I understand that road games on short weeks are very difficult, but would you discuss the apparent lack of preparation on the defensive side of the ball and the inability to make adjustments at the half?  Was this a coaching failure or is the talent on the defensive side of the ball just not what the coaches expected?
Christopher Carter
11:51
Again, there were plenty of adjustments made, the players fell short on them time and time again. It's a mixed bag that the coaches maybe could've found something different but they did not just trot out there with the same plays over and over.

I wasn't confident in the Porter pick after seeing my Buckeyes light him up in college.  Do you think he can ever develop into a shut down corner or is he destined for #2 status?  That last PI call on him though was atrocious.
Christopher Carter
11:53
I think he has the potential to be the guy and even made some good plays in this one. Ike Taylor got beat a lot in his early days too. Wouldn't resign on him just yet.
Jim
11:53
Defense was carved up for sure but this game takes a totally different direction if that fluke interception stolen from DK doesnt happen. Steelers get points on that drive and take back momentum.
Christopher Carter
11:54
Often times in close games we want to harp on one thing but it's always several things. Whether it's Rodgers heaving a ball into double coverage, Metcalf getting the ball ripped away, or penalties from Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick that stalled a red zone drive into being just a field goal, there's plenty of ways to look.

I love TJ Watt,  but I think we are going to be regretting paying him what we did.  He’s not the same player he was a couple of years ago.  He was invisible last night which he has been for most games this season.
Christopher Carter
11:54
Well, not invisible, as he did have a big sack at an important part of the game. But certainly got schemed out of the game by the quick passing attack.

Chris, What happened last night was that the Bengals woke up. Their new QB is a real leader, and the rest of their team was so hungry for it, they just snapped awake and into formation and carried out their offensive plays superbly well. Also Flacco felt so good to get out of the rat's nest in Cleveland! He apparently has much more left than we all thought...
Christopher Carter
11:56
Yeah, I'd wait to see if this continues after teams adjust to what they were doing. I also think this game goes very differently in Pittsburgh and not on a Thursday.

CC, the old man was before your time, and yes, he was extremely mouthy, but he generally backed up his braggadocio.  Me, to date, it's been all meaningless verbiage, and that whole collegiate "handsy" stereotype which I've yet to shake. Is there yet any hope of me living up to "essentially a 1st round pick" status? Any thoughts are appreciated.
Christopher Carter
11:58
Tomlin and Peezy Jr. in the chat?! Can someone be the Rock next?

But yeah I still do think Porter has a bright future. He got beat in this one against elite guys. It happens. Just has to bounce back.
say it aint so.....
11:58
What ever happened to chipping or knocking a receiver runner off of the line of scrimmage?
Christopher Carter
11:58
Those are some of the hardest receivers to jam because of their size and strength. Much like Metcalf. But I do think they could serve to try to do it more with safeties backing them up.
Alanis

CC, isn't it ironic that the very nemesis that motivated the retooling of the DB room is the same damn nemesis that laid waste to that same Steelers DB room on yet another woeful Thursday night?
Christopher Carter
11:58
Indeed!
say it aint so.....
11:59
Let me guess, the Defense had some communication issues?
Christopher Carter
11:59
I mean, some, sure. But no more than what most teams go through. Communication was less the issue compared to just being straight up beat.
Oy

"Do you want the defense to publicize, "hey you know what on 1st and 10 maybe should run some more cover 2" so that other teams can see that?"
Sorry, I hit the wrong key.
Do you want the defense to publicize, "hey you know what on 1st and 10 maybe should run some more cover 2" so that other teams can see that?
No. But there's a lot of room between "we have to do better" and the level of detail you mention.
Christopher Carter
12:03
And there are plenty of times they do go into more detail. But let's be honest, when they do people are still upset and accusing them of not making admustments, trying hard, etc. I think that's another reason they generalize their answers. Because those words won't change things.
Just me

Hi Chris, thanks for the chats and your game analysis, both are great, you do an excellent job! Am I way off the mark summing up last nights game as, The defense had a bad night, and this is the 2025 NFL, not 1975 NFL…these games happen to everyone
Christopher Carter
12:04
Thanks! And yep, agreed on all points. Heck, the 1975 Steelers also got ran over sometimes. Just gotta pick yourself back up and keep swinging.
12:05
Alright everyone that's it for today. Have to get back into the film room to get working. Thanks for those who joined and be on the lookout for my next Carter's Critiques!
