I thought Porter was a good first round pick who could develop into a tough, physical NFL cornerback. I still think he will.

Christopher, what a shame we didn’t have this offense back in the Pickett/Canada era when the D played well in almost every game. I know the D line has been soft on the run but the one constant is that Tomlin and all strike out on the D back selections whether draft, trade or FA. If Tomlin continues to hang around as he has shouldn’t he relinquish some of the responsibility of making personnel choices or is the blame on Omar and others?

As usual, it's a mixed bag. But they havene't struck out on all of their DB decisions. Joe Haden, Steven Nelson, Mike Hilton, and I'll even say Jalen Ramsey and Joey Porter Jr. were/are all good players. The Steelers have their misses like everyone else. When you have to cover the draft and the combine each year, you realize just how many misses happen regulary across the NFL.

CC, can big, jovial, loveable types really rise to the cream of the metaphorical crop in the LT world? In other words, aren't most effective tackles surly, unaffectionate, shower once-per -week types, at least in-season?
Christopher Carter
11:26
Don't know what any of this means. I think Broderick Jones has made strides and can be a good player if he continues on that path he's been on this year.

Chris what do you think about the play of Pat Freiermuth vs the bengals i think he looked good also what is your prediction on Sunday i think Rodgers does good against his old team and we win
Christopher Carter
11:32
I think Pat Freiermuth showed he's still that guy at TE and just wasn't getting the targets. In this offense, that'll happen. There's only only one football to go around and DK Metcalf and Jaylen Warren are rightfully getting a lot of the looks.

Freiermuth has been getting open, just not getting the looks. But I think a big reason they signed him wasn't just because of his talent. It was also because of his value to the locker room.
11:33
He doesn't complain, he always brings positive energy and he's consistently put the team before himself. I think he's due for more big days soon.

Also, I do think the Steelers win 30-24.

Chris, are we so sure that Will Howard isnt better than any of the QBs that could or will be drafted in the 2026 draft? To me, with his physical abilities plus big game success, I'd want to see him before a guy in the upcoming class.
Christopher Carter
11:36
You all do realize he was the (at-best) 7th best player on his own offense last year, right? Ohio State had 2 first round OL, 2 second round RB, a first round WR, and a superstar freshman WR, and honestly Carnell Tate might even be better than Howard as well, making him the 8th-best on their offense.

Will Howard did a good job last year in the playoffs with one of the most loaded offenses I can remember. I even said in our pre-draft coverage I think they should go after him ... but in the fourth round. He still has a long way to go in his development.

Passing up a potential bonafide first round franchise QB for a 5th rounder you hope works out just doesn't make sense.

If he turns out to be the guy, great. But he's more likely to be the next Rudolph instead of Roethlisberger.

Chris, in your opinion is anything ever on the Steelers coaching staff or is it always the players' fault? You seem to bend over backward to deflect blame away from the coaching.
Christopher Carter
11:41
Yes, I've put it very plainly several times. I think sometimes they get too complex with different things they try to do like with their disguises and sometimes they do ask too much of certain guys -- like what they did for Sutton last year and maybe what they're doing for Slay this year.

There's other things I've criticized like I think they should've told Dan Moore to kick rocks and figure out RT so Broderick Jones could play LT last year and that might not've helped Jones' development.

But I'm also not a person who blindly blames the coaches for everything off pure emotion like a hurt fan or a person just looking to grab the low-hanging fruit and say "coaching" without actually knowing what the real coaching decisions were.

For example, one of the main critiques of the Bengals loss I kept being told was the defense didn't make any adjustments and just did the same thing all game and got torched. Anybody who is being honest with you wouldn't say that, because they switched things up all night.
11:42
It's a lazy accusation made by people who just wanted to be mad at coaching and that was just an easy-to-reach critique that makes it seem like they're paying attention, when they absolutely aren't.
11:46
Now if you wanted a real critique of the defense from Thursay, I do think that game could show them their faith in certain players to win 1-on-1 in man out of certain disguised packages might've been misplaced. That's not coaching malpractice on its face, but it will become that if those same bets are made later and lead to further losses.

For example, the Slay on Iosivas play I referenced earlier is a matchup that on paper I would've taken Slay on to win at least for 2-3 seconds to let the heat get home, but he didn't. The Steelers look wrong for betting on him to win there and should find better situations for him to play that are more fitting to his skillset.

I also think -- as I said in a previous answer -- this defense can be more detailed in its disguise efforts. I think they sell their initial fake alignments fine, but it's the getting into position after to actually perform your real duties that I think aren't as sharp and lead to bigger mistakes.
While players have a responsibility for that, after a while the coaches have to realize who can and can't do those assignments and make adjustments to that.

I've read several times that Warren is too small to be the RB1, unable to withstand the grind. He is an effective back. Do you buy into that theory?
Christopher Carter
11:47
I do think he shouldn't be given 30 touches a game and that can wear him down. But I also think he can get 20 carries and be fine too. Especially if the OL continues to give him space to run where he's the one dishing out punishment on runs that get to the second level instead of taking the punishment with hits in the backfield.

CC, you like the uniforms they'll be wearing sunday night? to me they're  ok but could have came up with something a littler better. Loved the 33 horizontal stripes much more.
Christopher Carter
11:49
Helmets are cool, I think the jerseys look silly. They won't ever do this, but I think the helmets with the white jersey, black letters, white pants with a gold stripe down the side would look sick. But that won't sell because that's basically just a normal away jersey and problably wouldn't get people to buy them as much.

Best throwbacks are the block letters (which they should just make their main jerseys) and the 2007 black jerseys with gold numbers and letters.

Hey Chris - If you had to make a bet, which, if any, WR will the Steelers acquire before the trade deadline?
Christopher Carter
11:49
Jakobi Meyers, but if it was my bet, I'd say they don't acquire anyone and go after a DB instead.

CC, if Rodger's "body guy" helps the geezer wheels but is stationed way out west with the beautiful people, can they not get him a decent flat not far from Carson for the season? They could reallocate the money saved on sod replacement, as needed.
Christopher Carter

I don't think Aaron Rodgers has to worry about California rent vs Pittsburgh rent lol

I'm getting the hook here to call it before I hit two hours again. Thanks to everyone for your questions and be sure to follow our coverage this weekend from the stadium!
