Yeah, definitely. But it's worth remembering that what Konnor Griffin did is the exception, not the rule. It is very, very rare someone does what Griffin did ... that's why he's getting comparisons to all-time greats like Griffey.

I expect Termarr to start in Indianapolis. He's in line for either a debut this season or early next year and will certainly be on the 40-man roster in November, assuming the Pirates don't sell the farm at the deadline.

I don't know where my comments are landing, but I cannot believe the collective BAs of the catchers.  How could they have missed the mark on Davis...it is so demoralizing the dismal failures of the Pirates' 1-1s where do we start?
Colin Beazley
1:16
I'm getting them. Just a lot of comments today, legenGaryVee.

I think the Pirates have done ok at 1-1 over the last few years. The second one has been alright, I guess. But I wrote about the catchers for Thursday print: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2026/03/12/pirates-catcher...

Hey Colin, all we heard during the offseason was how much focus Henry Davis put on improving his hitting. So far, hes not registered a hit in spring training. This seems very concerning for a spot we hoped to see improvement. At what point do we lose hope and bring in a better option?
Colin Beazley
1:19
It's a fascinating question with Davis. Some pitchers -- Skenes and Chandler in particular -- are so comfortable with him that he's guaranteed a major league role. And the Pirates can certainly afford to have a defense-first catcher hit .200.

Now, .160? That's a tougher debate. I wouldn't move off of Davis at any point this year, but there is a point where -- if Davis does not improve -- his defense and relationships with pitchers aren't enough to outweigh the offensive struggles.

Travis Williams preaches accountability. Assuming the Pirates have their standard losing season, will he actually hold anyone accountable, regardless of whether or not they outrank him in the organization?
Colin Beazley

I would be shocked if major changes aren't made, Williams and Cherington included, if the Pirates don't have a winning season this year. But that's a question we'll start to have answered as the season starts and rolls on.

Fans tend to look at the '0-15' stat and are concerned, but then read that Kelly says the important thing is hard contact. I can see that - a hitter can just hit the ball. Those 'struggling' now, what does the eye test tell you?
Colin Beazley
1:24
I'll just do the catchers:
  • Davis is hitting the ball hard when he hits it, but he did that last year. I'll say that the last two outings have been more positive, but the overall results aren't drastically different than last year.
  • Bart also had a more productive day in his last start, with a baserunning mistake and defensive replacement costing him a 3-3 day. He's better than his batting average, but I'd like to see some power. I'm also concerned about the strikeouts, while Davis hasn't struck out much.
  • I am worried about Rafael Flores based on the stats and the eye test, but I always expected him to start in Triple-A anyways.

Hey Colin…Just a couple of quick thoughts and questions…Watching the last 3 or 4 games the regulars played in it sure seems Reynolds and Ozuna are getting fooled so much by off speed stuff…Reynolds in particular is in a funk that goes back a couple of years…Time to be concerned? Also  I’m sorry but the bottom of that lineup with Triolo and Henry leaves a lot to be desired…Can we make a case for Endy to make the team
Colin Beazley
1:26
Hey Dan. It's spring, everyone's working on something. I'm not concerned by Reynolds or Ozuna, because they have more of a track record of success. I also agree the bottom of the lineup isn't as good as some, but the Pirates aren't going to have a lineup of nine MVPs. Finally, Endy Rodriguez told us he's treating spring like a rehab assignment. He's looked solid at catcher and is hitting better, but he needs more time to ramp up and can get that in Indy.

I wouldn’t be concerned if he’d had a solid season in ‘25, but Bryan Reynolds’ spring stats so far look suspiciously like last year’s. Is there any concern within the organization or are they still confident he’ll bounce back?
Colin Beazley
1:26
Haven't heard anything throughout the organization. I wouldn't say I'm worried.

When the Pirates eventually lose Paul Skenes to trade or as a free agent, how do you expect Pirates fans to react? Will it be,   "Well, we all knew this was coming" or, based on the magnitude of the player, "This is the last straw"?
Colin Beazley
1:28
I'm sure it'll be a trade. IMO, it all depends on where the Pirates are and what they get back. I don't think fans will be happy regardless... but it's different if a Skenes trade kicks off another rebuild (I doubt it, given Griffin, Chandler, Ashcraft etc will be here) or if Skenes is dealt from a contending team. Tough to forecast years out.

Hi Colin thanks for the chats! If Henry Davis continues his sub .200 batting average into the season, do they allow him to get the majority of the starts? I know Skenes wants him as his catcher along with 1 other starter. How long of a leash do they give him to start hitting?
Colin Beazley
1:29
Hi Sunner in Orlando from Lebo, happy to be here. I expect Henry Davis to catch every start from Skenes and Chandler, at minimum, regardless of what his batting average is. The Pirates need their pitching to be elite to win. Davis helps them do that.

Do you think GMBC may make a deal for another catcher and/or trade Bart? The catcher has to hit some, no?
Colin Beazley
1:30
They won't have a fifth catcher on the 40-man, no. I agree the catcher has to hit, but I don't think adding someone else to the room is the answer. I do think they'd trade Bart for the right return, given they have Endy and Flores, but I don't think anything has lined up.

Im guessing alot of these questions are going to be regarding KG gets sent down.  The bigger question is how likely do you think an extension gets done?
Colin Beazley
1:34
I'd put it at better than 50/50. I don't know where either side stands and if negotiations have begun, but I anticipate the Pirates understanding they have to make Griffin a fair offer (read: larger than Reynolds' contract). The question is how the Pirates view the Roman Anthony contract, if Griffin would accept that, or if both sides are willing to go higher.

Saw the story about the Pirates handling their rotation the way Detroit has in the past. You have your two innings eaters in Keller and Skenes and then packaging two starters per game to limit them to once or twice through the order. Have you heard anything on this? I know spring games are different as they increase workload eachj outing but have you seen anything to indicate this may be the strategy in watching the spring games?
Colin Beazley
1:35
I don't think this is fully the strategy. I think they could get creative with the fifth spot, but I expect Chandler and Ashcraft to also be traditional starters. But Urquidy and Mlodzinski (and maybe even Clevinger) give you options with choices for long relief.

Has Nick Gonzales returned to camp?
Colin Beazley
1:35
Yes, he's back today. Not sure if he's in the lineup.

Colin, do you think the ABS system is fair.  What I mean is the pitcher and catcher can challenge the call only the batters can make a challenge.  To me only one of them should be able to make a challenge.
Colin Beazley
1:37
I don't see how that makes it unfair. Any at-bat is a pitcher and a catcher vs the batter. I also don't expect pitchers to challenge often, if at all, as they're moving around when they pitch and don't have a great view of the zone. (And as someone who grew up pitching -- I believed everything I threw was a strike.)

Hi Colin, The last few years the pirates moved there batting order around a lot and to it’s hurts the team. With the new players they have signed do you think they will stick with a more consistent lineup?
Colin Beazley
1:38
I expect consistent roles, but the batting order will move around some. It's not as big of a deal as many would think.
Cam Wayward
1:38
Do you see a surprise making the team? Fletcher or Devenski? Also, with my new contract I’ll be able to feed my family.
Colin Beazley
1:39
I'd say there are three non-roster invitees with a legitimate chance of breaking with the team: Griffin, Clevinger and Alika. And I think the first option has a far, far greater chance than the other two.
Aces High

It still feels like the Pirates are one bat away from a playoff team. Is there a move to be made to improve the offense? Or is Konner Griffen being called up their move? I don't see him making the opening day roster.
Colin Beazley
1:40
Griffin will help, whenever he's in the lineup. And the lineup does look better whenever he's in there. We'll see if the Pirates are one bat away or not, but I do expect them to be better.

Colin. Back on my campaign for the Password. I hear you on the bottleneck the Pirates have in the OF. I am not confident that Reynolds will rebound from his poor season last year. They have a younger, more powerful, better fielding replacement in Garcia. The Astros have been mentioned as a team looking for a LH hitting OF. Would BC do a Reynolds for Peredes trade. Nutting would love the salary savings plus we have our power hitting 3B. What say you?

Hey Colin, is it safe to say that trading for Isaac Paredes is a dead issue?  Any idea what the Astros wanted in return for him?  Thanks.
Colin Beazley
1:42
Combining these two. I don't see a Paredes trade happening this deep into spring training. I think the Astros want to keep him around, especially with the Pena injury. I appreciate the creativity of a Reynolds-Paredes swap, but I don't think it could happen.

Hey Colin! What are u seeing and hearing regarding Brandon Lowe? Big fan of him...hoping he can provide some power to the top. Know he is dinged up now....Bucs Fan in Ga
Colin Beazley

He's impressive. He's not a big guy, but he creates so much power with his swing. I've heard he's worked with a number of teammates in the batting cage, which could help.

And yes, he's dealing with some soreness, but this is very minor. One of those things that may not have even been mentioned if it was in-season.
