Do you feel that a more experienced coach would be making line up decisions like this? It feels like the line up is run by the GM and the coach is too green to have a say.

Don Kelly makes the decisions, but he also is given a ton of data before every game on lineups and bullpen decisions. Having information is a good thing.

I'm not going to speculate too much on who the Pirates should deal, but I also don't entirely know what they should do with Nick Gonzales if Brandon Lowe is retained. I don't see him as the answer at third base, even with a full offseason to work there. (Which, in hindsight, they should have given him this year instead of spending much of the spring at shortstop).

If Lowe is back, is Gonzales only the backup 2B/SS? That's not a sufficient role for someone who is competing for a batting title this year. Do they have him try the outfield? Does he need to be dealt? He's certainly a major leaguer, but his best spot is second and Lowe has been so, so good this year.

follow up question to your answer on DK - is it too much data? Does he have a feel for the game? Does anyone manage on this anymore?

I think teams and players can get overwhelmed by data, but I don't get that sense with Kelly. I won't make some overarching statement on Kelly's feel, other than saying I disagreed with the decision on Saturday.

I went to Wrigley Field for the first time on Friday and in my opinion it exceeded all expectations. It was an awesome stadium and atmosphere! I obviously love PNC Parkas well. But with the ballpark reaching 25 years old, what is something you would add to the ballpark to renovate it or make it an even better stadium and atmosphere if you had the power?

Wrigley is awesome. I have it in my top two, just behind Fenway.

I would add a Pirate ship. (Not actually, but it would be cool.)

To me, PNC Park badly needs more food options. This is coming from someone who probably attended 70 home games this year, but there just isn't much to talk about food wise. Traveling the league, the difference in food options is stark. PNC Park needs more food options, beyond the typical ballpark fare of hot dogs/chicken tenders/nachos.

Do you see Griffin as the 2027 leadoff hitter, or will his game evolve into a middle of the lineup presence?

I certainly think he could be the leadoff hitter nearly full time in 2027, especially if he continues to hit right-handers. I want him at the plate as much as possible, which matters most for a leadoff hitter.

Davis might be the best defensive catcher in the league, but also the worst hitter.  My little league coach used to tell us to get the bat off your shoulder, yet no one has told Davis.  Can't our hitting coaches get him to come to the plate ready to hit.

The last time we talked to him (last Sunday, after his homer in a 1-0 win) he said he'd noticed performing better when he came off the bench as a pinch-hitter or an injury replacement. Essentially, with less time to prepare/get ready.

Not entirely sure what he should do with that, but I did find it interesting. Maybe he can tweak his routine?

Should they shut down Skenes too since the playoffs are out of reach? Also, to see whatthey have in the farm system.

I don't think so. At this point, I think the Pirates gain more by having Skenes pitch, as he'll once again be used to a full season workload and can continue to find adjustments over his final few starts, than shutting him down and minimizing risk.

There's also plenty of opportunity right now. They're throwing two bullpen games per week, after all. Plenty of innings for Curtis/Kelly/Dotel.

Good afternoon Colin, Reid Detmers would be a good fit for the rotation. I am sure the Pirates could get him with the right prospect package. What is your take on Detmers.

I'd be in favor. He'll require a haul with two more years of arbitration, but he's not prohibitively expensive, is left-handed and (most importantly) is very good. Don't know what the Angels would be after, but given they're beginning a rebuild I think a prospect package could be enough.

Your comment about food hit a nerve. Have you made the rounds including club level? The entire main concourse operation did nothing fresh, with food sitting out under heat lamps for long enough for the food to actually get cold. Is there any way to get rid of the current providers? Club level is better, but choices limited.

Club level is my go-to when the media dining doesn't look great. I miss the paninis they had early last year. If anyone running concessions reads this, bring them back!

Do you think teams like the Rays make the salary cap harder since they win with lower payroll?

The MLBPA is certainly rooting for teams like the Rays and Brewers to succeed, as they prove small market teams can win in a capped system. That said, they'd also surely like all teams (including the Rays and Brewers) to spend more.

Think it was Jeff Passan that wrote that Brewers-Dodgers last year was for the fate of baseball. Then the Dodgers won in four games.

Mr. Beazley, thanks as always for your time. What is Stephen Morales like? With all the translating he does for the interviews, I am curious about the coach behind the words of so many young Pirates.

Mo is the man. There's a lot of good people around the Pirates, and Mo is certainly one of them. One of the guys who always has a smile on his face and is willing to help, either in interviews or with outfield help. Just a really, really good dude.

I agree that the team needs a few moves, not a full tear-down. Question is, looking at Cherington’s whole body of work here, do you believe he’s the right guy to make those tweaks?

Final question from JuniataKid -- the whole body of work isn't particularly enticing. The last season, save for Ozuna, has been largely successful. If Cherington can repeat last offseason this offseason (and they stay healthy), the Pirates will be a playoff team in 2027. But should he get a year eight?

I really do think it's an interesting decision. We could have our answer two chats from now.
