Using those cards... a full house would be: 8 of spades, 8 of hearts, 8 of diamonds, Q of diamonds, Q of clubs.
9:19
Holding a pair might be like:  Q of diamond, Q of clubs, 5 of diamonds, 8 of clubs, 10 of hearts.
9:18
The three of a kind refer to the TYPE, not suit of the card.  For instance, holding three of kind would be something like holding:  8 of spades, 8 of hearts, 8 of diamonds, K of hearts, 4 of clubs.

Now I understand 5 but I'm going to have to digest number 4.

Thanks for the help on 4.  But now I have a second question about it.  The 3-of-a-kind and pair refer to the suit of the card?  I am not a poker player so I was thinking of the value matching.

But.. great work for figuring it out!  These near the end are much more challenging that the early ones... but honestly.. in a week, you will see everyone of these as easy b/c you will have seen SO many more cool techniques.  GREAT job everyone!

Not doing it at all like the back of the book is irrelevant if you can defend your work.. so no worries there...he absolutely is allowed to invite all 10.  No reason why he wouldn't be able "some includes all", but "all doesn't include some".  Now.. I will say this... it's preferred NOT to state the answer as 1023 or whatever.. it would be strongly preferred to "see" the answer as sum.. or written as a finite term series.

Is he allowed to choose all 10 friends?

So my answer is one off and I didn't do it at all like the back of the book. I don't know what I am missing. I got 1022 by adding 10 choose 9 thru 10 choose 1.

Bethany, some " 1 or 2 or 3 or 4...etc".. solve the problem for EACH of these possibilities and then think about what should be done once EACH of those values has been considered.

That's number 5 on page 9.

Could someone help with number 5? I'm not understanding how to represent inviting "some" of his friends.

Sorry forgot to put my name below...

I think the 13 choose 1 is because you have 13 options for your 3 of a kind,Ace-King of which you must have 3 out of 4, hence the 4 choose 3. Then once you have the three of a kind there are only 12 options left for your pair selection.

Dayna, The 13 choose 1 represents "choose the value of the card that will represent the 3-of-a-kind" and the 12 choose 1 represents the step "choose the value of the card that will represent the pair"

Can anyone help me with problem 4 on page 9?  I peeked in the back of the book and cannot make sense out of the 13 choose 1 and 12 choose 1 pieces.
