Will be a few minutes late as I try to finish a few things up. Keep that queue going and I'll be back in a few. My second piece on MLB's relationship with television went up today. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/mlbs-winning-and-losing-efforts-to-conquer...
2:19
Okay. ready to roll. Here's a piece on the Braves that just went up. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/braves-print-money-for-liberty-media/

Griffin Canning is apparently getting his elbow looked at. Severino's is being repaired. Is this the time for the Tigers to strike and get a haul for Matthew Boyd?
Craig Edwards
2:23
If there is a haul to be had for Boyd, then yes, the Tigers should look to strike. For the Angels, their best trade option after Adell, who is basically untouchable, is also injured in Brandon Marsh. Boyd would make sense for the Yankees, but there are questions about Boyd's home run issues. If he could get a reliable third pitch, he'd be an ace, but I understand why teams might be hesitant to give up a ton for him right now.

Jays have a ton of pitching at AAA that doesn't really look good enough - what does Atkins do with players like Waguespack, Hatch, Zeuch, Reid-Foley etc.? Are they all bullpen bound or does trading them for relievers make more sense?
Craig Edwards
2:24
Both? I think giving them a shot in the bullpen is probably the best option as they also theoretically provide some starting depth that trading for a reliever wouldn't.

Do you interact with the comments on your posts/articles much? And if so have there been any that were particularly memorable?
Craig Edwards
2:25
I try to, but sometimes there's just too much to track and other things to do. I probably read 90% of my comments and I like to think I'm a well-balanced individual.

How many innings do you think Sale throws this year?
Craig Edwards
2:26
130?

i know we are all tired of the cheaty cheaty bang bang scandal... however, what do you make of this: as the Astros players were given immunity as a group in order for MLB to ascertain the truth, why doesn't Manfred just come out and ban them from posteason contention in 2020? Group immunity, group penalty
Craig Edwards
2:28
I'm not sure one more team with nothing to play for is good for the sport. They probably should have had future penalties already negotiated with the union plus some sort of increased scrutiny or something for the Astros.

MLBTR relayed recently a report that MLB teams were pressing to sign many pre-arb players to extensions during this spring.  Have you heard similar reports from the industry?  What players seem like good extension candidates?
Craig Edwards
2:29
The report came from Jeff Passan, I think, and he's usually right about that sort of thing. The Bummer and Peralta extensions aren't exactly extensions for stars, but I could see teams trying to get some cost certainty on a bunch of lower level players as the CBA comes to an end.

Who has a better year this year? Bo Bichette or Whit Merrifield?
Craig Edwards
2:30
Probably Bichette though it wouldn't surprise if their hitting lines were pretty similar.

How many games does Giancarlo Stanton play this year? O/U 90
Craig Edwards
2:31
I'll go over. There's a lot of time left.

Can the Cubs win the Central this year?
Craig Edwards
2:33
Of course. I would give the four non-Pirate teams a pretty equivalent shot so the odds of choosing any one team to win isn't good, but the Cubs have as good of a shot as anybody. https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds

How much money would the Giants have to kick in on either Cueto or Shark's contract to get a decent prospect back from the Yankees?
Craig Edwards
2:34
To the Yankees right now. Probably nearly all of it.

My idea for "fixing" the playoffs is to keep the single WC game but make the DS seven games. Your thoughts?
Craig Edwards
2:35
I don't think that's too bad, though I'm not sure the playoffs really need fixing.

Has MLB started planning for if/when the Coronavirus starts to impact the US?
Craig Edwards
2:35
I would hope so. It's worth being prepared for even if nothing comes of it.

The Brewers' owner recently stated that the team 'operated at a loss' in 2019. The Brewers have also cut payroll by 10s of millions compared to last year. Am I to believe that the team is stretching itself financially to try and field a competitive team? Am I wrong to be a little offended by an MLB team's portrayal of its accounting?
Craig Edwards
2:38
They also opened up a new spring training facility last year in addition to their increased payroll. A loss doesn't mean much if we don't know what the loss is and how much of the expenses are carried forward year to year.

Do you know any longitudinal studies on the frequency and severity of injuries among mlb players?  Would mlb players be better off pursuing a strict Babe-Ruth-like regimen of beer, hot dogs and philandering?
Craig Edwards
2:39
Not if they want to stay in the majors.

Thoughts on the YouTube TV incident? As someone who finally went streaming *because of a Fox Sports Ohio blackout with Dish*, I'm pretty irritated.
Craig Edwards
2:41
It's very disappointing and completely expected. MLB had the opportunity to control its own destiny but instead Sinclair is and what's happening with YoutubeTV, Dish, and Sling as well as Comcast in Chicago is what they do. I wrote a little about it last year. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/how-sinclairs-purchase-of-baseball-sports-...

Craig, are you a boardgame person as well? Or is that just Ben's beat?

It is not my beat.

Detroit if Manning and Mize both pan out?

Daniel Murphy, Ryan McMahon, and Brendan Rodgers are all on the roster. How does that shake out?
Craig Edwards
2:43
Rodgers still needs to get healthy, but I would think whoever hits, plays.
Matt
2:44
How long until the fans of most teams are able to watch their local team without a cable package?
Craig Edwards
2:45
Not sure. Teams now control their own streaming rights so some big monthly/yearly package might come soon, but to have 16 or more teams all do that could take years.
