Dear all, thank you for organising the live chat. I am sorry if you have already covered this question, but I was wondering if I want to go beyond 20 credits compulsory for the visa requirements, do I have to pay extra tuition fees in this case? For example, I would like to do 26-28 credits, if I would be able to mange with the schedule.
AvatarNell Novara

Hi- first of all, we recommend that LLM students take between 10-12 credits each semester. Taking much more than that would likely prove difficult due to the amount of prep outside of class, and we also want to make sure you have time to explore all of the other professional and personal development opportunities here at the law school.

However, to answer your question- you can take up to 17 credits per semester with no additional charge

Hi, can you explain how the bidding system works? I'm not familiar with it
AvatarGina Song

The Law Registrar's Office has sent you an email explaining the bidding process. Please review the email and the recording/PowerPoint from yesterday. Any further questions about bidding can be directed to Law Registrar at law-registrar@law.northwestern.edu.

Also, here is a link on the bidding system: https://www.law.northwestern.edu/registrar/registration/basics/tutoria...

Hello! When do expect to know the winter classes?
AvatarGina Song
8:39
It varies but it usually is the end of September.

Hi Nell, when can we see which section of the two mandatory courses we are assigned to?
AvatarGina Song
8:40
You will find out before Round 1 starts. The Law Registrar's Office will email you.

Hi everyone. Can we take online classes? Do they have the same credit value?
AvatarGina Song
8:42
Yes, they have the same credit value but keep in mind the New York Bar Exam requires all credits counting towards their exam eligibility to be in-person.

Hello Nell !
I hope you are doing well.
Do you have any recommendations of classes that everyone should definitely keep in mind to focus or specialize a little bit more on corporate law?
Thank you !
AvatarNell Novara
8:43
Hi. Most students interested in corporate law would take Business Associations, which is a introduction to the law that governs corporations and unincorporated business associations. BA is also a pre-requisite for many other courses.

Any course that has BUSCOM in the course code will be covering business and commercial law, so filtering your class search with that criteria will let you see the offerings in this area.

What time today can we expect to see which preference of ALS and CLR we have been assigned to and for the 'Law Bidding and Class Schedule' tile to be available in CAESAR?
AvatarNell Novara
8:43
The Registrar is handling that. I do not know if it will be today, but we have been told you will know before Rd. 1 starts.
Tatiana
8:43
When do we expect to receive information about winter classes? Do we have to bid on those?
AvatarGina Song
8:43
You will also receive information for this usually at the end of September.
Magdalena
8:46
Which class would you say is the most popular one and loved among LLM students (besides the ones we have to take to earn our degree)?
AvatarGina Song
8:46
It really depends on your interest but some of the ones that we recommend were listed in our Registration email -- Business Associations (BA), Contracts LLM, Introduction to Trial Advocacy (Int'l Track), Int'l Legal Research.

Do we need to leave some points for bidding next semester ?
AvatarNell Novara
8:47
Yes, the 4100 points are for the entire year. However, note that you will likely get many bid points back after round 1 and you will also have a chance to cancel bids to receive points back during last chance period, thus you would not need to, for example, try to save half your points for the spring.

Hi, a quick confirmation, I understand it doesnt affect the bidding if I do my bid july 28th at 9 am or on august 1, before the deadline? Or does the order  of bidding have also an efect?
AvatarGina Song
8:47
No, the order does not affect the bidding but we don't recommend doing it last minute.
Zhifu Jiang
8:47
Hi, I wonder if will we replenish the bidding points back to 4200 for each of the three semesters (fall semester, winter semester, and spring semester)?
AvatarNell Novara
8:47
No. You receive 4100 points to use for the entire year.
Naomi

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask (apologies if it's not), but when do we receive the correct orientation schedule? The one on the website is from last year.
AvatarNell Novara
8:48
It's not exactly the right place, but we can help! The orientation team will be working on that now and will likely begin publishing this year's information in the coming week. The full schedule will not be available until closer to orientation start date.

Hi! Could you please clarify the meaning of the statement, 'Students may not earn credit for this course and for BUSCOM 633T,' in the description of Private Equity? Does it imply that students will not receive a grade for certain classes?
AvatarNell Novara
8:50
Hi- the 633T class is one in the San Francisco program for JD students. Thus, this note is saying that students who take that class cannot also get credit for the Private Equity class you're referring to- 633R- it does not affect anything for you, you can certainly take this class and receive credit.

Hello Nell, I wonder how many points we have for bidding totally and when we can see the law bidding and class schedule module on Caesar? Thanks!
AvatarNell Novara
8:51
You have 4100 points to use for the entire year. For students not in LEAF, you will be matriculated today, and should then be able to see all of the material in CAESAR by tomorrow at the latest.
Tatiana
8:53
Where can I verify if the class is paper, exam or presentation type? I could not find in the class description.
AvatarNell Novara
8:53
If it is not in the description, feel free to reach out to the professor directly. You may also be able to find the syllabus for the class in the syllabus archive on the library website.

Hello, is there any specific classes that we should take if we want to get into an international law track?
AvatarGina Song
8:54
Though we don't offer specific tracks for LLMs, you can use the course listings for the JD International Law track as a guide to help you pick your courses: https://www.law.northwestern.edu/academics/curricular-offerings/concen...

8:55
Hi! if we can capture the points back of the unsuccessful bidding?
AvatarNell Novara
8:55
Please refer to the Registrar's material for bidding specifics, but yes, you can get bid points back if you do not get in the class.

Just make sure to cancel any waitlist positions during the last chance period if you want your bid points back. After last chance period ends, you will not get any points back.
