There is not a specific deadline, but we recommend doing it as soon as possible so that you'd have the opportunity to bid on the class in the first round. As the Registrar explained yesterday, waivers are up to the professors, so they can't guarantee when the professor will respond (though of course they encourage them to respond promptly and most times they do!)

Hi! I want to know that do we have a trial class? If we don't like the course after it starts, can we still cancel?
AvatarGina Song
8:56
Yes, for Introduction to Trial Advocacy (International Track) you can drop it within the Add/Drop Period.

Is the spring 2024 schedule that's visible in CAESAR finale, or will classes be added? I'm interested in Law of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, which was offered in Spring 2021, 2022 & 2023, but it's so far not on the schedule for Spring 2024.
AvatarNell Novara

There could still be changes to the spring schedule, but major changes are not likely. I'd recommend planning for the year without the expectation of any additional classes being added, just to be safe.

Is it possible to get a waiver for a clinic?
AvatarGina Song
9:00
LLM students may not bid on any course identified as Clinic or Practicum, as these courses require completion of the first year JD curriculum at Northwestern. On a case-by-case basis, we may arrange for an LLM student who is interested in a particular clinical course to register based on availability after bidding and after completing a personal interview. Please contact Adi Altshuler after Round 2 bid results are posted to inquire about a clinic registration.

Hi, related to pre-approved subjects to take the NY bar exam. Which ones are available to take in the fall semester?
AvatarNell Novara
9:01
You can see the full list here. Many are avaialble each semester. Some examples for fall: Business Associations, Basics of Contract Drafting, Administrative Law, Contracts LLM, Evidence, etc.

Hi, can we see if a class has online or in-class exam?
AvatarNell Novara
9:02
The Registrar has not yet published the in-person exam schedule. It will likely be posted within the coming weeks. Once posted, you'll be able to view it on the right-hand side of the screen of their website. Any class that is NOT on that schedule would have a self-scheduled (online) exam.

Hi! Do we have to take both Common Law Reasoning (CLR) and American Legal Studies (ALS)? Or we just need to choose one of them? Thanks
AvatarGina Song
9:05
Yes, CLR and ALS are both required courses.

Hi everyone! Will LLM students seeking admission to New York be able to satisfy the Skills Requirement under Pathway 2 (15 credits of practice-based experiential course work)?
AvatarNell Novara
9:05
LLM students at Northwestern satisfy this requirement through Pathway Four or Five (before or after completion of their LLM studies).

Do common law trained lawyers have to comply with the course requirements for the NY bar?
AvatarGina Song

We will need to look into this. Could you please send an email to International Programs please? International.Programs@law.northwestern.edu

Question about the bidding points. If we bid for a class 1000 points but the lowest offer was 100 points, would we receive back the 900 points and be offered a sit in class or would we lose the amount of points that we initially bid?
AvatarNell Novara
9:10
I'm not sure what you mean by "sit in class"- but yes, you get points back-- here is the process:

Say a class has 50 seats.

You bid 1000 points and you are the highest bidder.

You will get Seat 1.

The system will then fill the remaining 49 seats based on student bids. If the student who gets seat 50 bid only 100 points, that means the final "cost" of the class is 100 points for everyone. Thus, your 900 points will be returned.

Let me know if that makes sense.

Regarding the Course Bidding History, does the number displayed represent the minimum points required to enroll in the class or the total points accumulated from all students?
AvatarNell Novara
9:11
It represents the final "cost" of the class. You can see my answer to Magdalena above regarding how the final cost is determined.

Thus, the number is the number of points each student spent for the class.

Hi, I wonder about Kellogg-taught courses, can we know the bidding outcome after the first round of bidding? Or we can only know the outcome after the second round of bidding is over and thus have no chance to add other classes at the same time if we failed the bidding?
AvatarGina Song
9:12
The process is the same. You will know the results before Round 2.
Xiya Q
9:14
Hi! I want to know when do we start the course after bidding? If we don't like the course, can we cancel it after the course starts?
AvatarNell Novara
9:14
Fall semester classes begin August 21. With the exception of some classes (mentioned in our email, presentation, and their course descriptions-- examples include Negotation, CLR, ALS, etc.), you can drop any classes during open enrollment and add any open classes during the first two weeks of classes, which is known as "open enrollment" or the "add/drop period"
Zhifu Jiang
9:17
How many bidding points do you recommend we use during the Fall Semester, in order to make sure we can still have enough bidding points in the spring semester?
AvatarNell Novara
9:17
We cannot tell you how many bid points to use, but take note of the explanations of how the final class "cost" is determined above. You will likely receive many points back after you submit Rd. 1 bids and if not, you will have the opportunity to cancel successful bids/waitlist positions during Last Chance period to ensure you have enough points for spring.

Sorry if this a basic question, but where can we see pathways mentioned above?
AvatarGina Song

The document regarding the NY Bar pathways is located on the Registration and Records website:

Full information for the NY Bar Exam can be found here: https://www.nybarexam.org/

Hi Nell, according to your answer to Xiya's question, it seems like I can not change my choice for ALS course. However, if I do not like Civil Procedure after first class, how can I drop this course and select Constitutional Law?
AvatarNell Novara
9:21
You cannot. As explained in the Registrar's email and our email- you cannot change your CLR or ALS classes. They are an exception to the add/drop period.

Regarding the NY Bar requirements,
  1. Is it safe to assume that other than some mandatory classes, other credits can be done with any non-online classes offered at the law school?
  2. Would Kellog-taught (classes are in Chicago campus, if I understand correctly) courses count toward NY Bar exam required 24 credits as well?
AvatarNell Novara
9:24
Yes- any in-person classes at the law school- including the Kellogg classes taught through the law school (the ones you bid on) count towards the 24 credits.
