thoughts on Nebraska? even though they had a 1-2 showing, this team looks like they can keep up with the better teams (blowing games against Tech and Oklahoma in the 9th)
Kendall Rogers
1:31
I agree with you. I thought Nebraska had a decent amount of solid arms, and I thought the bats were solid for the most part. Josh Overbeek and Dylan Carey stood out to me offensively -- Overbeek is such a powerful presence in the middle of that offensive lineup. On the mound, I was really encouraged by what I saw from freshman righty Ty Horn. I think he's going to be a good one under Coach Childress. I'm more bullish on Nebraska than I was coming into the season, for sure.

If Texas State is undefeated after TCU and Round Rock, will we be in consideration for a Top 25 ranking?
Kendall Rogers
1:33
Would certainly be in the discussion. I thought the pitching was solid over the weekend, especially Jack Stroud. Chase Mora was .... Chase Mora. But how about my guy Ryne Farber? Trouty was sky high on him in the fall (he hit .500 in the fall). He hit over .600 this past weekend as a true freshman. Not bad at all!

The collapse of the Pac-12 has devastated the Oregon State football program.  Obviously, the dynamics in baseball are very different.  What is your long-term forecast for this program 5-10 years from now?  Still contenders at Omaha?  Faded into obscurity?  Something in between?
Kendall Rogers
1:34
Matt -- this might be wishful thinking, but I actually think Oregon State baseball will be just fine. The Beavers really care about baseball -- both from a facilities and salaries standpoint, and I also think the Beavers can mitigate some conference issues by cranking up the NIL machine a little bit. Oregon State is a premier program, and I don't think perception changes because of a conference change. But again, I might be proven wrong in due time. We'll see.

Does Kansas State have enough pitching depth this year to compete for a Big 12 title? To me it feels that Pete has three true weekend starters with an arsenal of guys in the pen to get out of jams, something they’ve lacked in previous years
Kendall Rogers
1:37
Jacob -- If Kansas State has a very balanced and solid weekend rotation, it will be a Super Regional caliber club for sure. I loved the offensive lineup coming into the season, but the question for me was the pitching outside of Owen Boerema and Tyson Neighbors. One weekend sample size, but Jacob Frost and others sure were impressive.

Time to be concerned with Florida after losing to St John's?
Kendall Rogers
1:38
It would be extremely silly to be concerned about a team after one game of a one-game series essentially because of weather. Let's see how things progress from here. But I don't think Cade Fisher, for my money, is the answer to being the Friday night starter for the Gators. We'll see how things go -- but I am going to bet that Fisher is not the Friday guy on the Opening Weekend of SEC play against Texas A&M.

I respect D1Baseball's patience with shuffling around the Top 25 too early each season. However I'm curious about the discussion around Duke's performance this weekend. One of only a handful of teams with two Ws over Top 25 teams
Kendall Rogers
1:48
Noah -- Funny you mention that. I actually made the comment last night on our group call that Duke had such an impressive weekend, maybe they should go up. But as Aaron pointed out, we're actually the high ranking on the Blue Devils. They seem like they might just be the second-best team in the ACC outside of Wake Forest. Time will tell!

Biggest Impact True Freshman so far?
Kendall Rogers
1:53
I haven't looked at EVERY freshman performance out there just yet, but the fact that Texas State's Ryne Farber hit over .600 over the weekend is pretty special. Georgia Tech's Drew Burress hit over .400 over the weekend as well, and A&M's Gavin Grahovac, my FOY pick, hit .444 opening weekend against McNeese. LSU's Jake Brown, whom I love, hit .667 over the weekend, Finally, Trent Caraway was a wrecking ball for Oregon State with a .500 average and power production.

What were your thoughts on Parker Boyd's appearance Friday night at ECU?
Kendall Rogers
1:56
Parker Byrd would be a really really easy kid to root for even without this issue if you've listened/watched interviews with him from Stephen Schoch and some others. He seems like a delightful kid. The fact he came back from that boating injury and actually got to a point where he could play baseball is not only insane and beautiful from a mental standpoint, it's also incredible from a physical standpoint. Parker Byrd will be successful in life well beyond baseball.

From the rankings it seems not much stock is put into these opening games - (Arkansas, Vandy, & Florida all lost but either stayed still in the rankings.). What moves the needle in the first few weekends in terms of moving teams up or down? Dominant wins? Playing quality competition? Injuries? Etc? Thanks!
Kendall Rogers
2:00
Everyone is a little different, but for me, for a team to make a BIG move this early, especially Opening Weekend, you really have to dominate someone we perceive to be pretty good. As the weeks go on -- consistency and what not is what I'm typically looking for. That's the true indicator of a good baseball team, IMO.

Any reason to be concerned about TCU’s pitching? FGCU has a strong lineup, but allowing 25 runs is a lot for one weekend.
Kendall Rogers
2:02
Let's see how things look in a couple of weeks -- let's see if it's a trend. My money is on a guy like Kole Klecker having a great season. Tolle had a rough start after the first couple of weeks. I don't think he has the stuff to just totally overwhelm people. Be a solid weekend starter? Sure.

Who is must see pitcher and must see position player, this year, that you recommend me seeing. Thanks
Kendall Rogers
2:04
For pitcher right now, I'd highly recommend Wake Forest RHP Chase Burns. He was up to 100-101 over the weekend, and his slider RPM was up to 3000. In terms of hitter, give me Travis Bazzana. He's a very special all around talent. A&M's Jace LaViolette would be in that discussion for me as well.

The state of Mississippi continues to struggle with its current place in baseball…both State and OM struggled at times this weekend. Who should feel better about their team today…State or OM.
Kendall Rogers
2:05
Guest -- tough to gauge a team doing a trip to Hawaii. As fun as you think that trip is, it's also very grueling from a travel standpoint. But overall, I watched both teams at least once over the weekend, and thought Mississippi State, for the most part, had solid pitching. I think Dohm will be really good, and Khal Stephen being that good against a historically solid offensive lineup was impressive. And of course you have Cam Schuelke and Colby Holcombe. There's potential there.

Any team with a much more impressive weekend rotation performance than you were expecting?
Kendall Rogers
2:06
Consider the opponent was a middle of the road Southland Conference team, but Texas A&M allowing '1' run in three games over the weekend to Justin Hill's club caught my attention -- especially with how rough that pitching staff was last season. That was the least # of runs A&M has allowed in a weekend since 1918.

What are the overall thoughts on Texas right now? Who should be the 3rd starter if it is not Tanner Witt
Kendall Rogers
2:08
Overall, I still feel pretty good about the offense. Jared Thomas is a really good player, and though he only hit .250 this past weekend, seeing Jalin Flores get a massive hit for them in a huge situation was great to see. He's a supremely talented player. My concern squarely sits on the pitching staff with Tanner Witt just being off. There's now a level of consistency to how off he has been. Tanner is a great kid and I'm hoping the tide turns for him. But if not? The best stuff I saw in the fall outside of LBJ was probably Cody Howard. There are some aspects of his game I really like.

Too early to judge Justin Parker’s influence on Bulldog pitching? The #’s look good in regards to strikes thrown and walks!
Kendall Rogers
2:10
Air Force does historically have a good offense, so it was definitely a positive weekend. But again, my focus on teams/pitching staffs/lineups this early in the season is how consistent they are. Let's see if that becomes the trend week in and week out before conference play. It's quite ironic that both MSU and SC pitched at a very high level over the weekend.

I know it's only one weekend, but are there 1 or 2 teams who passed an early eye test and you can say are likely to be better than you guys anticipated?
Kendall Rogers
2:12
Weston -- Aaron's reports on Duke sound fantastic. Even though we are high on the Devils -- they sound very very good and potentially a contender for Wake Forest. I'll let Aaron weigh in more on Duke in a second. Indiana State apparently looked very good over the weekend, too. Jacob Pruitt showing electric stuff is a game-changing development for the Sycs.
Aaron Fitt
2:14
As Kendall said, Duke certainly looked the part of a legit Omaha contender this weekend. I already thought their pitching would be elite, and it is. But I was very curious to see how all their new pieces in the lineup would do, and it looks like they once again hit the jackpot on all their portal guys, and the freshmen appear as talented and advanced as advertised. So they answered my questions about their lineup. But I would also say that I'm satisfied with the arms I saw from Coastal and Indiana -- both those teams entered the season with high-end, proven lineups but questions on the mound. I think they're both in pretty good shape with their arms, even though Duke was the biggest winner this weekend.

Early thoughts on the UNC/ECU series this weekend? Seems like ECU has the clear starting pitching advantage, but the UNC lineup is dangerous.
Aaron Fitt
2:12
Yeah, that looks like a marquee series for sure -- both teams were great during opening weekend. I think your assessment is spot on: ECU will have the starting pitching advantage, as it will against most teams, but UNC's lineup is indeed downright scary and multi-dimensional. I also like ECU's lineup plenty, and I think UNC has plenty of good arms, so should be a great matchup.

Thoughts on how Wake Forest's lineup looked this weekend? Some interesting quotes from Coach Walter and the players that they will not be able to hit for as much power as last year's squad, and will have to win more on the bases and with  station to station play. They aren't Brock Wilken, but I still think new guys like King, Tellier, Hawke, etc. looked pretty impressive, and that park is HR friendly.
Aaron Fitt
2:16
Yeah they'll still hit their share of home runs, certainly. Obviously Kurtz is one of the premier sluggers in the country (and the best all-around hitter in the country, for my money), and you're right that those other guys have pop. But last year's team was really exceptionally high-powered, and this club definitely won't rival that. But I think the early returns were strong, and I expect Wake to hit more than enough behind that ridiculous pitching staff.

Three solid PAC-12 schools lost winnable weekend series: Stanford, Washington, and USC. Which of these teams’ weekends concerned you the most?
Aaron Fitt
2:20
Stanford felt like such a huge wild card team for us heading into the season -- I could not shake my suspicion that they were in for one of those rough "reset" years based on the roster turnover, but coming off three straight CWS trips, that program has certainly earned some benefit of the doubt. But that said, losing two of three at home to Fullerton, getting shut out in the opener and routed in game two — that's a little alarming, and makes me think my hunch about the Cardinal might have been right. I like the arm talent they have, but I just don't see a lot of offensive firepower there, and the offense didn't do much this weekend. I'm not ready to write them off, but that start would make me nervous if I were a Stanford fan, considering the questions we already had about that team.

You look at all of the double digit HR guys UGA added in the Portal and they all showed up with the long ball over the weekend. They had 10 HR from five different guys and Condon didn’t have a single one of those.
