Any compensation system, by its very nature, is going to work against somebody's interests.

Fact is, in this system, it at least forces teams to put their money where their mouth is. The QO is better than the arbitration acceptance in previous sytem.

Maybe Mike Leake is underrated. He's a good innings eating pitcher who can hit better than some shortstops and catchers out there. He's athletic, fields his position. Maybe I like Mike Leake too much, but I thought he was a great sign for the Cardinals, and I'm not even a Cards fan.

No, I think he's rated at this point.

He's an adequate pitcher with little upside, fairly safe, and got a contract exactly in line with his projections.

TO me, that's rated.

As someone who saw AJ Reed play at Kentucky, his only real weakness as a hitter is against pitchers that consistently get the ball in on his hands. He's going to mash mistakes and probably be like Rizzo and get beaned a lot.

One possible reason for the discrepancy between position player and pitcher contracts this winter: teams are relatively more confident in their ability to identify and develop hitters than they used to be, while pitchers still have a huge (and seemingly inescapable) risk factor in terms of injury. Basically: your cost of, and level of confidence in, developing a 2-WAR position player is now much lower/higher than doing the same for a pitcher.

If the NL adopts a DH, there's nothing stopping the league from a semi-radical division realignment. Moving Houston and Texas into the same division seems to have done well for both teams, why not more of that, (especially if 2 expansion teams requires a realignment anyway).
