There's a lot of spcialized knowledge I don't have

Why would the Rockies sign Yonder Alonso? Wouldn't it make more sense to see if they could teach Sam Hilliard to play 1B and bring his bat up to The Show if so? Is this just a case of the Rockies being the Rockies?
