What was Detroit thinking with the Martinez trade? If it's the last day before the deadline, fine, take what you can get. But what was the harm in waiting two weeks to see if an outfielder for a contender gets injured?

The harm in waiting is that you don't even get that.  There are a limited number of teams that are going to pay handsomely for a one-win corner outfield type

(That's one win remaining, not one win pers season)
And a trade two weeks before the deadline is essentially 25% more value for the acquiring team.
The risk is you get even less.
