Considering August's piece from this morning on Baez and the huge range of UZR and other defensive rankings of players on a year-to-year basis, it seems as though analytics on the defensive side of the game is still far behind the offensive side of the game. To that end, what value can we really derive from WAR rankings for offensive or defensive-sided players?

You can derive value, you just need to understand the limitations and volatility of the components.
A player with a greater percentage of his WAR from defense, assume a greater margin of error.

I would absolutely try to trade him this offseason. In a weak free agent market, someone's going to pay him assuming terrific odds he's a superstar.

Some HOF voters will hold it against Beltre for not repeating his 48 HR year in LA and the dent Safeco made on his mid-career numbers. The again, some will hold his career 338 OBP against him.

What is the A's motivation for releasing Billy Butler in September? It's not as if he's occupying a roster spot, and they'll still be on the hook for the remainder of his contract assuming he clears waivers. He wouldn't even be postseason eligible.
