Pitchers get hurt. You never just need five.

What makes projecting a minor league hitter harder than a pitcher?
Dave Cameron
12:49
The skills that make a good hitter are far more subtle than the ones that make a good pitcher, and require far larger samples before we can be confident that we're picking up on signal and not noise. A guy throws 97 a few times, you know how hard he throws. A guy hits a few screaming line drives? You have no idea if that means anything.

You get the last word so let's discuss more. Isn't there at least a small chance the Cubbies were just happy to be there last year? Maybe they thought at least a little they were the Cinderella Story. I know Maddon does a great job at keeping his players grounded and positive. But they are young. And they did accomplish something that is rare for a north side team. Thoughts?
Dave Cameron
12:51
I think trying to judge the thoughts, feelings, and motives of other people is impossible, and I think it's foolish to try.

Considering what teams gave up for Kimbrel & Giles, should Braves be looking to trade Vizcaino?
Dave Cameron
12:52
Absolutely. Vizcaino won't bring back that kind of package (TJ surgery + PED suspension in his history), but this is the time to move him.

What's the worst MVP race in your lifetime? 2006 AL MVP is pretty dire in retrospect.
Dave Cameron
12:54
What year did Justin Morneau win the MVP? That was bad. Juan Gonzalez the year that A-Rod and Griffey had 10 win seasons was also terrible.,

Let's say the Mets and Nats are still very close at the deadline. What do the Mets add? Nifty bullpen piece? Shortstop? Wait, they already have an okay shortstop. Ummm, a guy who can steal time from Asdrubel and also spell Wright?
Dave Cameron
12:55
Their bullpen is already really good. Reed/Robles/Bastardo is a sneaky great trio in front of Familia.
12:56
But yeah, I could see them picking up another IF in case they don't want to run Wright out there everyday in October.

Blackmon was one of Cistulli's guys.
Dave Cameron
12:57
Oh yeah, I forgot his love affair with Charlie Blackmon.

Found some for the Fringe Prospect question: Salazar, Semien, Betts, Piscotty, Franco from 2013
Dave Cameron

How did I forget Mookie?
Well-Beered Englishman
12:57
Danny Salazar was a Cistulli guy.
Dave Cameron
12:58
Yeah, like I said, he's actually done really well at identifying some guys.

Jay Bruce is actually having a good year. The Reds FINALLY trade him this summer....right?
Dave Cameron
12:58
Jay Bruce has -0.2 WAR so far.

Caminero went from possible solid back end pen arm to throwing gasoline on a raging fire. What the heck happened there?
Dave Cameron

Relievers are fickle.

So... is Carson a secret prospect genius?
Dave Cameron
1:02
Well, no. Some of it is just quantity; he touts a lot of guys, so some of them are bound to work out. But I think there's also just a basic reality that guys who perform well, even without obvious tools, probably are doing something right, and some of those guys are going to just be better than scouts expected. He's fishing in a stocked pond, basically.
1:03
And that's kind of the whole point of the exercise; there's no reason to ignore these kinds of prospects, but outside of his coverage, they are largely ignored.

Dave, can you please explain to me how Elvis Andrus can be -1.5 BsR, -2.6 Off, -2.1 Def, and still be a 0.0 WAR player? Is there something I'm not understanding about how all these are added up?
Dave Cameron
1:04
The first three are baselined against average, which is not the same thing as replacement level.
1:05
Okay, have to do some writing. Thanks for chatting everyone.
We'll do it again next week, and as I mentioned earlier, come back on Friday for Eric Longenhagen's first prospects chat.
