The idea that just because the PA agreed to a hard cap on international spending means that they now have to agree to a hard cap anywhere else is weird. It's not like it was some big dam holding back an unrelenting river, and now that they've agreed to one hard cap, it's hard caps everywhere.

Does money you send out to facilitate a trade count against your salary amount for luxury tax purposes under the new CBA?I assume money for released players counts.
Dave Cameron
12:34
Yes, money you're still paying for players not on your roster counts against you.

Quintana and Jones for Glasnow, Meadows, Bell and Keller
Dave Cameron
12:36
Probably too rich for PIT, but interesting.
Jones is worth a lot, so maybe that's not so far off.

If you could make it so that you never had to read another question about a specific player, what player would it be?
Dave Cameron
12:37
Jack Morris.

Matz is too good for two years of Blackmon, right? Blackmon fixes the Mets alignment, but 2017 value basically stays the same. Maybe Gsellman+?
Dave Cameron
12:37
Yeah, no way you give up Matz for Blackmon.

Jose Bautista to Boston 2/$40. Plays LF, RF, DH and maybe Butterfield can teach him a little 1B. Plenty of at bats, big bat for Sox, who says no?
Dave Cameron
12:38
Red Sox don't really need an OF.

It has been said that you have been rather critical of the Braves' rebuilding strategy and some of the moves they have made thus far towards that end? Do you think that is a fair assessment and if you were the Braves' front office right now...in what direction would you go?
Dave Cameron
12:39
I would say I'm more skeptical of some of the pieces they've chosen to rebuild around than of the strategy in general. The Kemp/Markakis acquisitions weren't my cup of tea, and I'm not as high on guys like Newcomb as they are.

12:40
How is it possible that teams are just yawning at Encarnacion?
Dave Cameron
12:40
34 year old pull heavy DH? There's real risk here.
Josh

Were you surprised by the non tender of tyson ross? I know he had a major injury, but he was a 4.5 win player in 2015.
Dave Cameron
12:41
I'm sure the Padres shopped him before they cut him. If no one else wanted to take him at $9M, then that probably says something about how teams view his medicals.

What do you think the Orioles should do? O's fans see a cliff coming after 2018. Should they push in and try to strike gold these next two years or try to sell and get better down the road? The follow-up question, assuming you think they should sell: what is a real-world example of a team blowing up a team that, at the time, was still good (playoffs, 89 wins last season)? Seems like GMs/owners would not like to do that at all.
Dave Cameron
12:42
Yeah, it's very hard to sell a rebuild coming off a winning season. I would imagine the Orioles will evaluate their chances in July, and if they aren't in it then, they'll be big sellers. The question will be if they can get Machado to sign an extension. If they can't, and they think he's going to leave, then you almost have to rebuild.
12:43
Because you can't just let him walk.

At least some part of RedSox trading Buchholz was payroll flexibility to be opportunistic in the free agent market, right? Related note: what kind of deal do you think EE lands?
Dave Cameron
12:44
It was about getting under the luxury tax. I would guess Encarnacion ends up somewhere we're not expecting; maybe Texas?

The Cubs have ridden to victory on a loaded farm system that paid off. Can you think of any examples of teams with equally highly-regarded prospects not panning out en masse?
Dave Cameron
12:45
Yes, they drafted Bryant and Baez with top picks, but mostly, that's just not a true statement. They got Rizzo/Fowler/Russell/Arrieta/Hendricks in trades, signed Zobrist/Lester/Lackey as free agents.
12:46
The idea that the Cubs tanked their way to a great team is an easy but incorrect narrative.
12:47
Obviously getting Bryant helped a lot, but had the Astros made a better call, they could have ended up with Mark Appel instead. And they still would have been good, just maybe not best-team-in-baseball good.

12:48
I don't think it is likely at all but could you see the Giants making a run at Harper when he becomes a FA?Envisioning him as Bonds 2.0 and the glory of all the McCovey Cove shots.
Dave Cameron
12:48
They can try, but I can't see him taking less money than top dollar, and I don't see them as the high bidders.
Cody
12:48
What would a Tyson Ross contract look like? And do you think Atlanta makes any sense?
Dave Cameron
12:49
I bet he gets like $7M guaranteed with incentives that push it to $15M if he maxes out.
So it could end up being a better deal for him if he stays healthy, but with a lower base than his arbitration reward would have been.

12:50
Obviously team structure and make up for position varies from team to team, but is the standard team structuring goal still relevant? That being SS, 2b,C, CF (up the middle) are strong defenders, and lf, rf, 1b,3b provide the offense. Is that a sound philosophy in today's statistically driven game, or too old school to succeed?
Dave Cameron
12:50
There's no real reason to limit yourself to that kind of thinking. If you have a mediocre defensive SS who can really hit (Carlos Correa?), you don't want to flip him for a weaker player just because that guy fields better.
12:51
It's about overall production, not looking for certain types.

Quintana's not a flyball pitcher? He seems to be in the top quarter to third of fly ball rates over his career, and the opposite for his ground ball rate. On a related note, what's a rule of thumb for fly ball/ground ball pitcher?
Dave Cameron
12:52
His career GB% is 44%; league average is 45%.

Following up on your answer above, If the Pirates want to keep both Bell and Meadows, would Kevin Newman+Glasnow be good enough to headline a package for Quintana?
