The best pitcher not named Kershaw this year will be____
Dave Cameron
12:43
Syndergaard, assuming health.
Electric
12:44
Andrew McCutchen a smaller return than Eaton for the pair of pitching prospects that WAS sent to CHW?
Dave Cameron
12:44
Well, McCutchen is significantly less valuable than Eaton, so yes.

re: replacement level defense, your answer makes sense, thanks. it just seems like we should use some minimally-acceptable defense metric, and that's almost certainly different from average defense (and it's not necessarily less than average).
Dave Cameron
12:45
We're not assuming any kind of defense in replacement level. Replacement level is a combination of offense and defense, and those move with each other.
It's a sliding scale.

Can you drop any hints of awesome things FG plans on doing this year?
Dave Cameron
12:47
Well, if you're an Effectively Wild listener, you've already heard the news that Jeff Sullivan is joining Ben Lindbergh as co-host on that podcast and it's coming to FanGraphs. That's pretty neat.
There's also going to be some cool stuff relating to team pages that you'll like.

For clarification, do you believe De Leon, by himself, is a reasonable return for two years of Dozier at his price?
Dave Cameron
12:47
Yes.
12:48
Think of it this way; if you were the Twins, and you already had De Leon, would you swap him for Dozier?
I think the answer is pretty clearly no.

if the dozier to the dodgers doesnt work out would they look to trade for frazier and move turner to 2b? i am hesitant because if they liked frazier they could have had him last offseason (although at that time there was no where to play him)
Dave Cameron
12:48
No, Turner's time at 2B is over.

Going back to your article about the Astros, do you think there's some "critical price" that's keeping the Astros from going after Bautista, or do you think that they feel that they're content with their outfield options going forward?
Dave Cameron
12:50
Sounds like they're still mostly focused on pitching.

Explain to me please how Cargo has no trade value...would love to hear you back that up. Since 2010 he's been one of the best offensive OF's in baseball. Steamer projects another 30+ HR's this year w/ a wOBA of 360. Putting him 6th among all OF's. Go ahead...
Dave Cameron
12:52
Park effects are a thing. Gonzalez's three year wRC+ numbers: 83, 114, 108. He's not that much better of a hitter than Mark Trumbo at this point, and you can see how much interest Trumbo is generating as a free agent.
Jason
12:53
The fact that there isn't much of a market for Trumbo is an indication of... A) greater focus on value of defense B) decline in value of HR due to overall HR output C) obviously some combination of the two
Dave Cameron
12:54
C, with draft pick compensation and a crowded slugger market thrown in.

Do y'all expect the ad-free membership to provide more revenue than the basic membership per user, or did you set the price point so that they're basically even?
Dave Cameron
12:55
We set the price point for ad-free as close as we could to what we think will keep us revenue-neutral in terms of lost advertising revenue from people switching to ad-free.

Not a question but a suggestion: my favorite books to read to my kids are by Julia Donaldson. Popular titles include The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and The Snail and the Whale.
Dave Cameron
12:57
I'll check those out. I'm definitely tiring of Elmo...

12:58
What about Montgomery being a starter, specifically, are you not sold on? Most of the numbers look decent, albeit small sample.
Dave Cameron
12:58
His command stinks.

12:59
Dave, a lot has been made of the uptick in home runs this past year but no one knows why. Is it possible that with new launch angle data, teams have found more optimal swing paths for their players, especially the lighter hitting players? Has anyone done a study on this yet?
Dave Cameron
12:59
Anything is possible, but keep in mind that teams have had HITF/x data for a long time now; we're just now getting launch angle in the public realm due to Statcast, but this isn't new information for teams.
1:00
There's no real reason to think that players figured out they should elevate the baseball because the public got their hands on Statcast data.

Where should I vacation in The Outer Banks this year? First time ever going
Dave Cameron

Depends entirely on your age, group, and interests. We took our honeymoon in Ocracoke, and went to Duck twice, but we were always mostly interested in quiet/calm/relaxing trips, and for the trips to Duck, the ability to have the dog off leash on the beach year round was a big attraction. If you're not taking a dog and you want some nightlife or more "things to do", you're probably better off in one of the bigger towns.

Dave, I have 3' of standing snow down in SE Bend. How much do you have?
Dave Cameron
1:02
We're probably a little over 3 feet. Took the dog to our neighborhood field for some running, and It was thigh deep.
This is just so much snow.

Well how bad does defense have to be for it to be "replaceable"? Say -5 UZR? That seems bad but not horrifically so. A -10 UZR? I think that's what he's getting at?
Dave Cameron
1:03
Around -20 UZR is when teams start looking to move a guy an easier position.

Can you drop any hints of decidedly terrible things FG plans on doing this year?
Dave Cameron

We're going to keep Carson on payroll.
