Return seems light for Longoria no? Arroyo is highly ranked, but there's a lot to worry about there, and they add to take on Span's money
Dave Cameron
12:43
Longoria's contract was underwater.
12:44
You don't get big returns for guys making more than they'd get in FA.

How ridiculous is not trading Machado to the Yankees? It would seem that what they get from a perceived PR gain is not worth the fact that the Yankees probably match up best with the Orioles.
Dave Cameron
12:45
If you're trading Machado, you're not winning this year, so you shouldn't care where he spends his last pre-FA year, really.
But maybe Angelos is afraid he'll fall in love with NY and re-sign there.

Has any research been done on the value of incremental wins  per player? It feels like a lot's been written about teams seeming to value wins at around $8-9M each, but we also know a team will always a 6-win player more valuable than two 3-win players due to scarcity. How much does the dollar value of a player increase from the 1st win to the 2nd win and on from there?
Dave Cameron
12:47
It's mostly linear, or very close to it. Just as extra wins in one roster spot are more valuable, so too is the risk you're taking by consolidating value into one human being. Risk is part of pricing.

What about the angle that injury could increase demand for a SS/3B, where current demand at those positions is relatively low among contenders?
Dave Cameron
12:48
It's possible, but it's not something one should count on. Plus, if the Jays hold Donaldson, could have even more competition than they do now.

Does the Rays trading Longo signal the beginning of a complete teardown? Are we more likely to see Kiermaier and Archer traded now?
Dave Cameron
12:49
Sounds like they're keeping Kiermaier as their new franchise player, but yes, Archer goes.

Can you expound a bit on your Machado to Cleveland piece? You suggested names like Greg Allen, Erik Gonzalez, as well as Salazar or Clevinger and then Chang. Do you think those names are enough or were you suggesting in addition to 1 of their 2 top prospects (Mejia and Triston McKenzie?) - Also what percent chance do you give Angelos giving the approval to trade Machado anyway?
Dave Cameron
12:49
They aren't trading Mejia or McKenzie for one year of Machado.
Clevinger or Salazar and some filler is perfectly fair.

As a Cubs fan I am as concerned about the lead off spot as much as the pitching.  Other than Yelich or Hernandez I don't see any high OBP/lead off types available for trade.  Any suggestions?
Dave Cameron
12:50
Stop caring about batting order.

12:50
Odds Archer goes now, and who has most pieces/motivation to get him?
Dave Cameron
12:51
Still think he's a perfect fit for the Cubs.
And they have the young hitters to go get him.
Fatt Kemp
12:51
Any chance the Dodgers go into Spring training with Matt Kemp on the roster, or would they rather just drop him?
Dave Cameron
12:51
I wouldn't be surprised if Kemp is out of baseball now.
12:52
Replacement level guy that has now burned his way through multiple organizations, basically no upside left. No real reason to roster him.
Sterling Malory Chris Archer
12:54
Any updates on if Kiley is going to be chatting?
Dave Cameron
12:54
Kiley will be chatting.
We're not entirely done with cool staff announcements, so we're going to rework our chat schedule a bit in 2018. Stay tuned!
Brendon
12:55
How much would Kemp get on the open market?  1year/2mil? NRI?
Dave Cameron
12:55
He's the new Ryan Howard. He might get a minor league deal from someone.

Your ESPN.com piece says Rangers should rebuild which is understandable. Two part question, where do you see Gallo's long term defensive position, and do you think Odor can be an above average regular?
Dave Cameron
12:56
Gallo's got the glove for 3B, so that's where I'd plan on playing him. Odor looks like a guy who will bounce between having good and bad years, but is roughly average overall.
Rougned Smelly Odor
12:57
Do you think a "half year of Machado" return in prospects would be worth more than the competitive balance round B pick the Orioles will get when Machado leaves?
Dave Cameron
12:57
Yes

Is Dombrowski really that bad of an executive? Most of the trades have been fine-ish and he dodged the Hosmer bomb! Am I grasping at straws?
Dave Cameron
12:57
His primary skill is convincing his owners to spend money.
That's useful!
12:58
It would just be nice if he knew how to build a roster in some way other than "spend big money/trade my good prospects" for name value guys.

You say the giants are bad but they are projected for 81 wins right now. Ahead of the Rockies and 3 wins behind the Diamondbacks. Seems like they can compete to me, especially if they add a couple more wins to their outfield (Jarrod Dyson).
Dave Cameron
1:00
Mediocre is probably more fair than bad. But Dyson doesn't make them good.
They're not close to the legitimately good NL teams.

The long term value in that trade for the Braves is a clean payroll slate for next years FA  class. I imagine that with players like these available you free up money in advance. I'm betting Machado in ATL 12 year 425 mil.
