I think you actually don't want to be in that group. NYY/LAD/CHC/PHI are going to have to wait out those big guys, and so anyone hoping to get any of their money will have to wait out the whole winter, then risk taking a short-term deal if they don't end up pivoting to you.
12:43
I wouldn't be surprised if there were some real bargains outside the top tier next year.

Hi Dave.  With the White Sox currently projected to only having 63M committed to payroll next year (according to Cots), I'm wondering if the following trade makes sense for all parties:

White Sox get:
Clint Frazier
Dillon Tate
Andrew Suarez
Rodolfo Martinez

Yankess get:
Tyler Saladino

Giants get:
Jacoby Ellsbury (White Sox kick in 20M, 12M, 3M)

Yankees get more payroll flexibility (Yu Darvish?) and a place holder at second (and can still build a package around Florial if they want to pursue Cole).  Giants get an outfielder for basically 8M per year.  White Sox continue to build up the farm system by "buying" prospects while they are in a position to do so.  Ellsbury gets to go to a team on the West Coast where he can play everyday (might convince him to waive his no-trade).

I know this will never happen, just more or less wondering if everyone would benefit from this, or who would need to receive more.  Thanks.

12:44
So you want the White Sox to get Clint Frazier for basically $35M in cash?
I'm not as high on Frazier as some, but I think NYY could do better than that.

So, Willie Calhoun's projections seem pretty aggressive. For comparison, Aaron Judge was projected to SLG .450 last preseason...Calhoun is at .491! What about this profile is driving the strong projections?
Dave Cameron
12:45
Well, Texas is a pretty nice place for left-handed hitters.
And Calhoun can really hit.

12:46
Management has obviously gotten smart on the risk of big-time free agent deals...what's the next move for the MLBPA in future labor talks?
Dave Cameron
12:46
Blow up the arbitration system and get pre-FA guys paid more.

Dipoto insists that he's comfortable with the starting options they currently have. We know Gonzales is out of options and is re-introducing his cutter. But Jerry can't seriously be content with this group, can he? At some point, whether it's before or after the season starts, they likely need another front-line starter, right?
Dave Cameron
12:47
I don't think they have any money left.
Or not enough to get a difference maker, anyway.
12:48
They really needed Ohtani.
HugoZ
12:48
What's the positional hit if you move Cain to left field?
Dave Cameron
12:48
A few runs. Not huge. Nothing wrong with having multiple CFs out there.

12:49
So Szymborski just posted the Zips projections for the Yankees bullpen on Twitter and...woah...
Dave Cameron
12:49
Yeah, it's the best bullpen I've ever seen.
Aaron
12:50
If you were John Mozeliak, who would you sign/trade for to upgrade the team. I keep hearing Arrieta/Moustakas/Hosmer. I'm not sure they really need a CI, and Arrieta has come down from his Cy Young days. Personally I'd like to see a trade of Gyorko or Carpenter if you're going to trade for a CI and sign Darvish and one more bullpen piece.
Dave Cameron
12:50
If they just want to spend money, sign Lorenzo Cain.
If they want to do more talent-package trades, then just keep pestering TOR about Donaldson until they give in,.
Vance
12:51
Do you plan on writing back to those who did not get the position (like a thank you for applying)
Dave Cameron
12:51
There's no way we can send individual personalized emails to everyone who applied, but we'll probably do one big email to those who don't get interviews thanking them for their application.
12:52
And it's not just to be nice. We really do appreciate the time everyone has put into their applications.
We know it's not fun to put yourself out there and face potential rejection. We are legitimately honored that so many of you want to work here.

12:52
Should the Cubs spend 4/110 on Arrieta?
Dave Cameron
12:52
No
Erik
12:53
What is the minimum amount of baseball writing experience a new FanGraphs writer has had?
Dave Cameron
12:53
I don't think Carson had ever written anything about baseball when he got hired.
Or if he had, it was weird.
Hal
12:55
Are you surprised there has been little activity for Cain?  Might be a little old, but he is still really good and could help a team like the Mets.
Dave Cameron
12:55
He could help almost everyone. He's good and won't be that expensive.

12:56
How much of the FA slowness do you blame on a favorable CBA for the owners, and how much do you blame on smarter FOs?  Or maybe dummer agents?
Dave Cameron
12:56
Well, I don't think you really want to spell it "dummer" when blaming them for this, but I do think there's a pretty big divide between how front offices are valuing players and what most agencies are doing these days. I do think the representation side of things is ripe for a major analytical overhaul.

12:58
Hey Dave, any chance we get some spanish language content from you guys in the future?
Dave Cameron
12:58
It's definitely something we want to do.

Re the proposed MIL-TB Archer trade above, you said "TB would rather get a better top guy or top two than getting 6-7 guys back."  Are there organizations that would rather have 6-7 guys than a better top 1 or 2?
Dave Cameron
12:59
No, most teams really focus on the top names in those kinds of deals.

I've been studying the pitching prospects and one thing I've wondered -- are we getting duped a little bit by guys like Forrest Whitley and Walker Buehler? These guys are pitching in such short stints, that their stuff has to be playing up knowing they are only tossing 75 pitches. So you get sucked into these big time K rates and low walk rates because they can give 100% on every pitch. They average around 4IP. Personally, I'm much more impressed by guys like McKenzie, Kopech, and Keller who are going much deeper into games. Thoughts?
Dave Cameron

You definitely want to adjust rate stats for outing length, no question.
