The Guy Next Door

Do we finish over .500 this year? And how much playing time will Moreno get? Looks like a stud. Thx man.
Anthony Franco
6:32
Don't see any reason for Moreno not to get 400 plate appearances if he stays healthy. Should be a good enough hitter he can mix it at DH on occasion to lighten his defensive workload as well
Kyle Lewis
6:32
Mariners fans say my knees are totally shot and Dbacks will get no productivity from me.  Can I stay healthy in a very limited role in AZ—occasional corner OF, occasional DH and occasional PH.
Curious
6:32
is Lewis finally Healthy
Anthony Franco
6:33
I don't know but think they're in as good a position as anybody to take that shot. As the first questioner mentioned, they've got plenty of outfield alternatives so they can afford to shelter Lewis a ton to try to avoid overworking his knee
ScottAZ
6:33
Did the Dbacks do enough in the off-season to rebuild a horrendous 2022 bullpen?
Anthony Franco
6:35
It's certainly better. Probably a little shy of average still but not the bottom three unit it's been for a couple years now. The Chafin deal was incredible value. Miguel Castro's a fairly stable middle innings guy, maybe Kevin Ginkel's finally figured it out
Will B.
6:35
Is there any chance that Madison Baumgarner moves to the bullpen this season?
Anthony Franco
6:38
I don't know. Think they'd just cut bait entirely if he's struggling again. Even at his best, Bumgarner thrived on command, a willingness to attack hitters and a deep repertoire rather than truly overpowering raw stuff. He doesn't feel like someone who'd take a dramatic step forward if unleashed in shorter stints
ScottAZ
6:38
If Lovullo eventually settles on a Closer instead of a Committee approach, who is your oick for who that might be?  Melancon?  McCough?  Familia?  Other?
Anthony Franco
6:39
Probably Melancon again. He's not their best reliever but obviously he's had success in the ninth before and the Mantiply/Chafin types are more valuable taking key at-bats in the seventh or eighth inning than they'd be strictly used in the ninth
6:40
If you're going to use a set closer -- and Lovullo has already said he doesn't plan to at the start of the season -- it's probably best to do so with your third or fourth best reliever rather than your #1
Gary Sanchez
6:40
Who signs me? Do the Diamondbacks make sense, maybe even on an NRI?
Anthony Franco
6:41
I don't see the fit. They're stockpiled a bunch of RH bats to mix in at designated hitter and have Moreno/Kelly as a quality catching duo
CT
6:42
Will Rojas be the starting 3B over Longoria ?
Anthony Franco
6:43
Yeah, I'd guess Rojas gets like two-thirds of the reps there. Longoria's been injured a decent amount the past couple years, probably better suited for more DH time with 40-50 third base starts at this stage of his career
6:45
Rojas is too good a hitter to not be in the lineup most days. He's not a strong defender anywhere but he's tolerable at third, and playing next to a hopefully healthy Ahmed could help cover for some of his range limitations
ScottAZ
6:45
As a team, do you think they benefit from or are harmed by the new balanced schedule?
Anthony Franco
6:47
Certainly should help in the short term at least. Fewer games against the Dodgers and Padres would help anybody, and both those teams destroyed them last year
monkeygrande
6:47
dbacks have a loaded farm, do they adopt a win-now mentality and trade prospects for solid players?
Anthony Franco
6:48
Eventually they'll get to that point, sure. When that happens depends on how quickly the team starts playing at an above-average level
6:49
It's not going to be before Opening Day, but if they're in it at the deadline, then they'll make some calculated buys from the middle tiers of the system to start building depth around the developing core

2 for 1 Bold Prediction: The Dbacks have 2 award winners this year. Gallen wins NL Cy Young and Carroll wins Rookie of the Year. You agree/disagree or partially or agree?
Anthony Franco
6:50
The chances of both of these things hitting is slim but sure, they each seem viable to me. I'd probably have Gallen top five in the NL CY race and Carroll would certainly be top three for Rookie of the Year going into the season

More exciting prospect, Jordan Lawlar or Druw Jones? Which one is more solid?
Anthony Franco
6:53
Jones seems more "exciting" because he could be an elite defensive outfielder and those guys are fun as hell to watch. I'd lean towards Lawlar's overall profile if picking the better prospect (particularly with at least some uncertainty about Jones' shoulder until he gets into minor league games) since the shortstop defense and plate discipline are great foundational skills

What could Hazen do to bolster the bullpen? Smith? Hand? Make a trade?
Anthony Franco
6:54
I'd advocate for any team to sign Will Smith but it feels like Chafin was the finishing touch on the bullpen for now
6:56
In an ideal world, a power righty would be a nice boost closer to the deadline. That's still not really a profile they have right now. Miguel Castro throws hard but leaned more heavily on his slider than his sinker last year
On the Bubble
6:56
Who starts the year in Reno? Thomas, Lewis, PSmith, Perdomo? There are a few roster spots to be had (Especially with Ahmed maybe going down again), but not enough for everybody.
Anthony Franco
6:57
Yeah I imagine Pavin and Perdomo are ticketed for Reno to open the season
"Anthony Franco"
6:57
Who do I think will regress the most from the 2022 roster?
cranky_old_fart
6:57
Are you a Jake McCarthy fan or is he a regression poster boy?
Anthony Franco
7:00
I think McCarthy's more of a low-end regular or quality fourth outfielder than the well above-average offense he showed last season. Good complementary piece but there's a little too much swing-and-miss for a player who doesn't hit the ball especially hard. He's not going to run a .349 BABIP for multiple seasons, so he'll have to improve the contact skills if he's going to offset some regression in that area
ScottAZ
7:01
Which Dback will steal the most bases in 2023?  Carroll?  Rojas?  McCarthy?  Thomas?  Other?
Anthony Franco
7:03
Yeah this is an interesting one. They've got a lot of above-average athletes to choose from. Think I'd go with McCarthy. We've already seen him have success in that regard and it feels like Carroll might be someone they limit a bit on the base paths to minimize the chances of an injury
Corbin Carroll
7:04
Do you see an extension in my future and if so what would it look like?
Anthony Franco
7:04
Did a post looking at some of the comps on this a couple weeks ago
7:06
I think he'd beat Michael Harris' eight years and $72MM already -- more faith in the bat with Carroll than there was with Harris. Could see it pushing nine figures if the goal is to buy out three-plus free agent seasons
