The Effectively Wild guys have a great solution. Once a runner hits the bag, it (theoretically) extends upwards. Can't come off of it upwards, only slide past
Dave Cameron
8:45
That was my idea...
JC
8:46
The Effectively Wild guys have really done a great job being the managing editor of Fangraphs
Craig Edwards
8:47
batters should swing at hittable pitches if they are strikes, regardless of count if they are comfortable doing so and the pitcher doesn't seem wild.

Jeff Sullivan's Twitter informed he that Joey Votto had more 3-0 swings than like 6 or 7 entire teams. Jeff Sullivan's Twitter is alright.
Dave Cameron
8:47
Jeff Sullivan is a national treasure.

i don't buy the "its so hard to be on-air talent" when there are 15-20 local broadcast teams who are easily better than buck/reynolds are
ChatzMcGee

Terrible throw Reddick.
Minty
8:48
Did Nick Cage discover Jeff?
Dave Cameron
8:48
Nothing like a five hopper on a ball you have to charge...
Craig Edwards
8:49
this is true, but also keep in mind, broadcasters are generally going to be better focusing on one team. McCarver had declined a ton on the national broadcasts but did a decent job only doing a handful of Cardinals games the past few years.
Erik

Dance Dance Fever, huh?
Eric

Is there any precedent for Hill? From nothing to big game starter at 36?
JC
8:50
Why Fields instead of Uriah?
Dave Cameron
8:51
Probably takes Urias a while to warm up.
Plus if you're going to take out Hill, probably want to do it when an RHB is up.
8:52
Didn't hang that one.
Craig Edwards
8:52
He wasn't quite nothing. He was a solid starter early on, got hurt, tried to be a reliever who specialized, changing his motion. He then went back to his original, successful motion to be a starter again and it miraculously worked. It's a nutty story, but he's always had talent.

Also, lots and lots of curveballs
Dave Cameron
8:54
Uh, no, you don't try a steal with the pitcher up. If you get thrown out, the pitcher has to lead off next inning.
mtsw
8:54
I'm not a scout but am I crazy to think Julio Urias looks like a guy who's gonna gain a ton of weight in his late 30s? Are we looking at the next generation's Bartolo Colon without knowing it?
Dave Cameron
8:54
That's been a knock on him for a while now.
Ben
8:54
more remarkable than Arrieta?
Craig Edwards
8:54
Arrieta was a decade younger. much different situation.
Dave Cameron
8:55
Whether to let Hill hit here will be interesting.
I'd guess they PH for him if there's no bunt situation, but let him put one down if there is.
Aaron (UK)
8:56
do Fangraphs' WE charts take into account the position in the order that is due up?
Sean Dolinar
8:56
No, it's just basically score and inning.
Rick
8:57
Re Washington spending: could they decline Gio's option (relying instead on Lopez, Giolito, and Cole to round out the rotation) and spend the money on the bullpen?
Craig Edwards
8:57
That option is way too reasonable not to be picked up.
Sean Dolinar
8:57
Re: WE -- Oh and base-out state.
Andy J.
8:57
Hill is getting ready to hit
Bork
8:58
Walking Grandal. Okay.
Dave Cameron
8:58
Grandal is a good hitter.
ARC
8:58
Does the MASN dispute ever get settled? I think we see more aggressive spending when this happens.
Craig Edwards
8:59
eventually, but Washington has already spent as though it will get the money. A massive spike isn't likely.
Pat
8:59
10/10 eyebrows: 1) andrew toles, 2) matt moore
Aaron (UK)
8:59
wow, they got a 3-6-3 even with Zimm's arm. Espinosa's compensates
Dave Cameron
8:59
Espy has a cannon
AJ
8:59
How long does Scherzer go tonight? Do we see more of him or do they go to their bullpen soon?
