Ed Bouchette's Steelers chat: 12.5.17
powered byJotCast
Ed Bouchette
1:58
Good afternoon, let's begin
Baze
1:59
It's been a crazy season -- the drama, the scary injuries, the many games where the team plays like bums and still squeak out a win, Boswell emerging as the MVP and yet, their 10-2. Have you ever seen a season like it before?
Ed Bouchette
2:00
It certainly has made things interesting. Kickers aren't MVPs, that will go to Antonio Brown again
2:01
It's just football. Shazier injury could have had an effect on first half play. Lot of big plays called bag, lot of penalties by the Bengals, who always wind up being the Bengals
Jon West
2:01
Hi Ed, Do you think Shazier will be done for the season (including playoffs)?  If so, who takes his spot?
Ed Bouchette
2:02
Let's hope he recovers enough to walk, first, and then deal with that other stuff later. Way too early to determine. Matakevich takes his spot if healthy, then Forte, then maybe even Moats

Best part of living in Cincinnati is listening to local talk radio after another Steelers win! Can we expect Sutton to take over for Coty? Would this an improvement or do we just hope for a quick Haden return? Thanks for the chats!
Ed Bouchette
2:03
Sensabaugh has had a hit or miss couple games and last night was mostly miss. Mike Tomlin said they were looking for a spark when he put Sutton in, said it's nothing against Sensabaugh. But what do you have to lose by playing Sutton?

On JuJu's Burfict block/penalty:  I haven't heard or seen a clarification on what made his block something illegal and not a "crushing block."
Ed Bouchette
2:05
He has been suspended for one game by the NFL just now. ruling said that he "lined up a defender and delivered a violent and unnecessary blindside shot to his head and neck area" and then "celebrated the play"
Stillers4Life
2:06
Think Tomlin will have a chat with JuJu about his taunting incident? I can’t stand Burfict, and he probably deserved it given his history, but that set the team back 15.
Ed Bouchette
2:07
It set JuJu back $$ as well. MT has already scolded him publicly
HB
2:08
Why do people want to suspend juju but are then silent on the bengals safety that went for the headshot on browns touchdown
Ed Bouchette
2:08
The NFL just suspended both for one game
ALB
2:08
Ed, Only five years or so ago this game would have been called a classic slugfest between two good teams with no love lost between them. Today its being treated like it was a criminal incident. Are the days of the old-fashioned slobberknocker gone for good?
Ed Bouchette
2:09
They're not necessarily gone, they're just paying the price for those who still practice the game that way
Sheff
2:09
Do you think Juju's suspension is fair?  He was a first time offender making a football play.  Was it the taunting after that nailed him?
Ed Bouchette
2:09
I think the taunting could have been the determining factor.

The Steelers appear to be in need of ILB depth now... any idea who they may look at?  Practice squad?  Steve Johnson?
Ed Bouchette
2:10
I would think they will take a look at both. Not ideal, though.
Sheff
2:11
If you had to guess, is Shazier's career over?
Ed Bouchette
2:11
Let's not start speculating on that please
Chify
2:11
if JuJu appeals, does he play Ravens and risk the Pats game if he loses?
Ed Bouchette
2:11
Those appeals have been getting quick results because I don't believe the NFL wants them to linger. I would say it would be a quick ruling for this week
Scott
2:12
Do you agree with the Ju Ju suspension?
Ed Bouchette
2:12
No
Iron man
2:12
Hi Ed, with juju’s suspension, do you see him appealing or not?
Ed Bouchette
2:12
It does not hurt to appeal, it probably also is fruitless
2:13
I don't like all these suspensions being dished out by the NFL. Fine them. Multiple offenders, then suspend.
Sheff
2:13
Did it seem at times the entire defensive backups were in.  I saw a play with Fort, Sutton, Moats, and Matakevich.
Ed Bouchette
2:13
Yes, that's what happens when there are injuries, etc.
Professor Flush
2:14
How bad was the rain affecting the passing game last nite? I can't remember Antonio dropping that many passes in a game.
Ed Bouchette
2:14
A.J. Green also dropped two and he mentioned the rain but said he still should have caught it. At times, the rain was heavy
Wade
2:14
How do you explain that same suspension as Gronk? Is taunting really as bad as hitting a defenseless player laying on the ground AFTER the play?
Ed Bouchette
2:15
The NFL is heading toward a slippery slope, to use a cliche, on these suspensions in my opinion. Each suspension will be compared to the next hit on the field and the bar will be set for more suspensions.

Ed, in all of your years as a reporter, have you ever seen: A. A scarier moment for a player; B. A chippier game; and C. A bigger choke by a team all in one game?
Ed Bouchette
2:15
Yes, yes and yes.
2:16
Tommy Maddox in 2002 is one. The Bengals playoff loss to the Steelers when they imploded at the end was another. Several Ravens games come to mind as chippier
A Blincoln
2:16
Was Sutton nocticably effective?
Ed Bouchette
2:17
Not noticeably, no, at least not on deadline
