Ed Bouchette's Steelers chat: 2.13.18

Good afternoon on Valentine's Eve & Ash Wednesday Eve and all you other Eves out there. Let's begin
AK

The Steelers have traded up in the first round only twice that I can recall, for Polamalu and Holmes.  Do you think it’s likely the Steelers will trade up this year, and if so how far do you think they’d be willing to go?
Ed Bouchette
1:58
No, I don't think it's likely because, as you point out, they've done it twice. They've also moved back a few times. If they would trade up, I don't see them going higher than 20. But then, I don't see them moving up at all. You can get good players in the second and third rounds too.

Is this the end for William Gay with the Steelers?
Ed Bouchette
1:59
If it's not, I don't see what significant role he could serve on their 2018 depth chart. He didn't serve much of one in 2017

Are you in favor of drafting a QB to replace Dobbs or Jones this year?
Ed Bouchette
1:59
Heavens no.
Buzz

Are Mitchell and Gay salary cap casualties? Any chance we keep Chris Hubbard. Thanks ED. I always enjoy your thoughts.
Ed Bouchette

In a league desperate for offensive linemen, I don't see how Hubbard won't get an offer to start somewhere. Gay probably will go and Mitchell will be a game-day decision.
Andy
2:01
Do you think the Steelers will cut one of their starting offensive linemen due to the cap?
Ed Bouchette
2:01
No, I don't.

Why is it that the Steelers draft needs are the same every year, LB and DB's?  Is it scouting, or perhaps a hard transition to the 3-4 and our defensive schemes? We seem to miss at these positions more than hit.
Ed Bouchette
2:02
I agree that they have missed some, but if that's where the needs are, you must keep trying. Plus, drafting late doesn't help them

Mistake to sign Bell to a 14 mil/yr contract with a lot of guaranteed money?  I think so.
Ed Bouchette
2:03
I don't know about a mistake, but that's a huge commitment when you need more help elsewhere. You also better be ready to adequately replace him if you don't sign him.

Since Shazier is still under contract while being hurt, is there any way they can restructure his contract to make his base salary smaller to save cap space, and move that money to a signing bonus?
Ed Bouchette
2:05
Yes, they could sign him to a multiple-year deal with a big bonus to spread out the cap hit over a number of years rather than it all counting in this one. They also could put some protection for him in the deal in case Shazier plays again -- huge roster bonus, for example.

Hey Ed...I have two questions. One is relevant to this upcoming season.  The other is of interest only to my friends and I.  1. Based on your observation, is Tomlin a coach who delegates or one who micromanages? 2. Who, in your opinion, is the third best quarterback since the merger?  Thanks.
Ed Bouchette
2:07
MIke Tomlin has been one who delegates, but then he took over some of the defensive duties such as some play calling and running meetings last season.
2:08
Not sure what you mean by No. 3 QB, on Steelers? Probably Kordell Stewart, although they used him improperly and gave him too many coordinators

Will the Steelers get compensatory picks for Timmons and Jones
Ed Bouchette
2:09
I saw somewhere where they should get a 7th-round comp pick this year. Remember, they signed a few players too, like Alualu

Ed, Was Josh McDaniels within his rights to turn down the Colts job the way he did? If you were an owner (not named Kraft) would you EVER consider him for a head coaching position in the NFL again?
Ed Bouchette
2:10
He obviously was within his rights but it was a punk move.

Do you think the Steelers draft another CB this year and also how long is Joe Haden signed for?
Ed Bouchette
2:12
Teams, not just the Steelers, are always looking for good corners. So, yes, they could draft one. Haden has 2 more years under contract

Ed, unlike NFL owners with other businesses, the Steelers are the Rooney's largest asset. It appears they are hands on, yet behind the scenes. How important is it to them to clean up the drama from 2017 and focus on the product? Can't remember a year with more drama.
Ed Bouchette
2:13
There certainly was plenty of drama, almost weekly, but not all of it was in their control, such as the injury to Shazier. Art Rooney told some of us last week that he did not think his team lost focus.

what is your favorite and least favorite stadiums, excluding Heinz
Ed Bouchette
2:15
Football stadiums for the most part don't do much for me. They're not like baseball fields, which have more character and whose dimensions are different in each city. My favorite stadiums are the ones where I have the best seat. However, purely on what appeals to me visually not counting that, I like Baltimore and Cleveland, which I see quite often of course. Not a fan of Cincinnati's. I've never been a fan of indoor stadiums but the newer ones are much improved, such as Minnesota, Houston and Detroit.
2:16
I hate Dallas' stadium.

Will you please give me an explanation as to why few if any offensive line holding calls are made in the playoffs? Then maybe they should be called the same in the regular season, making the game more exciting.
Ed Bouchette
2:16
I'm sure the defensive players would disagree with you.

Ed, settle this argument: "The Greatest Pittsburgh Professional Athlete Ever?" Clemente or Lemieux?
Ed Bouchette
2:17
I thought Dave Parker could have been that one if he hadn't gotten into the stuff in the 1980s.
Rick

Ed,I want them to sign Bell but not to where it will cost us in other areas...Your thoughts.
Ed Bouchette
2:18
I don't see Le'Veon giving in, so if they do sign him, it will cost the Steelers in other areas.
The Windber Rambler

Ed, do the Rooneys still hold hope upon Heinz Field's Super Bowl hosting bid?
Ed Bouchette
2:18
Publicly, they will say so.  Deep down inside, they have to know it will never happen.
Doug

Hi Ed - love your chats, wanted to get your thoughts on the defensive coaching changes.  I am happy with them and am hoping for more.  Could Joey Porter be next?
