Ed Bouchette's Steelers chat: 2.13.18

Well, I was wrong to begin with because I saw no changes coming. Carnell Lake truly did leave on his own. I think if they were going to make any more changes, they would have made them by now.

Follow up: How many of the other 31 head coaches would have won if they coached the Steelers against Jacksonville in the playoffs?  My guess is most of them, as the Steelers had home field, a bye week, and more talent (in my completely amateur opinion) than the Jaguars.  What say you?
Ed Bouchette
2:21
You're not giving the Jaguars much credit for a team that went to NE and nearly pulled off an upset in the title game.

Ed, have you ever watched an episode of, "Pittsburgh Dad"? What's your opinion on his parodies?
Ed Bouchette
2:22
Pittsburgh Dad is not on my radar.

How can we justify paying Bell what he wants?  Both the Pats and Eagles just used multiple backs to win a lot of games - we need some money to fix our D weaknesses instead don't we?
Ed Bouchette
2:24
All that is true and I am in that corner. But I've never seen the Steelers let a great one get away other than Rod Woodson after he had a down year following ACL injury.

How long do you think Steeler brass allow the head coach to underachieve. One more year?
Ed Bouchette
2:25
Going 13-3 and tying for the best record in the NFL is hardly underachieving. Losing at home to Jacksonville was. You need to study up on the history of the Steelers and their coaches, starting in 1969
Tim
2:25
If Bell accepts an offer from the Steelers, they still need a back that can be aggressive at the line of scrimmage, and help shorten the game. Agreed?
Ed Bouchette
2:25
Very much so.
Terry
2:25
Do you think there is an anti-Tomlin faction in the Steelers organization that is trying to undermine him? There seem to be more anonymous sources this offseason who are not on board with his program.
Ed Bouchette
2:26
I have not.seen that. There were a few unnamed limited partners who reportedly wanted him out. I have seen no other anonymous sources say anything regarding him.

All things being equal, what position should the Steelers draft in the first round? ILB, OLB, Safety or RB?
Ed Bouchette
2:27
I have not really looked at the talent in this year's draft yet, so I'll just go by position of need -- ILB, S, CB, TE. RB moves to the top of that list if Bell isn't back.

Ed, when you say "Thanks for another great chat.." are you usually being sarcastic?
Ed Bouchette
2:28
No. I mean it. While some of you may not like my answers, I try to answer honestly and I also appreciate everyone taking time to come on here and ask questions, even the dumb ones.

if you had your choice today, Bell on the team or off next season.
Ed Bouchette
2:29
I would use that money elsewhere. The next highest paid back averages $8.5 M. He wants $15 M. The Patriots, Eagles and others have shown you can win with a  few good backs, especially when you have a great pass game.

Will 50 ever play football again?
Ed Bouchette
2:30
I'm not going to answer that because I do not know and I'm certainly not going to speculate. There's already been too much of that in some erroneous reports.  Let's take a deep breath and hope we can watch him progress to where he can walk normally first.

Ed is there any chance the Steelers will use the restricted tag on Bell and would any other team be willing to give up the two first rounders for him in your opinion?
Ed Bouchette
2:31
Let's get our terms straight. It is franchise tag. It can be non-exclusive, which means another team can sign him to the big deal he wants and then that team has to give the Steelers two first-round draft picks. That's not going to happen.

If you could be in the winter Olympics what sport would you do?
Ed Bouchette
2:32
Curling, of course. It's like shuffleboard on ice.

Will the Steelers keep Dan Rooney's patch on their jerseys for the 2018 season?
Ed Bouchette
2:33
I believe they can do that only for the one season, the way they did for Art Rooney Sr.
Mateo
2:33
Ed,  How do you like the new defensive coaches that were hired?  Are they an upgrade?  Thank you.
Ed Bouchette
2:34
I like Tom Bradley and while Dunbar has been around, I don't know him.
Adam
2:34
Any noteworthy offseason rehabs or surgeries?
Ed Bouchette
2:35
Eli Rogers had ACL, injured in playoff game.
Mateo
2:35
Ed,  Biggest difference between Dan and Art Rooney and how they run the show?  Thank you.
Ed Bouchette
2:35
This is a chat, not a lecture. Just not enough time and there may not be as much difference as you think.
Arturo
2:35
Hi Ed.... would you pick up Dupree“s five year option? Do you think the Steelers will do it? What options they have? Thanks
Ed Bouchette
2:36
Based on what he's shown, no I would not pick it up. They can always try to sign him after the season.
Rahn
2:36
After this group of Brown/Stallworth/Swann/Ward/Lipps, who'd be the next guy on your list for Steelers wide receivers?
Ed Bouchette
2:37
Plaxico, Santonio, Yancey Thigpen every other year, Frank Lewis,
Big mike
2:37
Boswell best steelers kicker ever?
Ed Bouchette
2:37
So far, yes. But Gary Anderson was pretty darn good over a longer period.

Just wanted to say thanks for the chats. I think you guys do a great job of giving your best answers while also having to juggle some of the stupidity of a lot of questions. You have more patience than me. I just read on Bob L's Chat (Steelers.com) where someone asked if we should trade Bell and Bryant for Nick Foles. Hahaha. Jeez Almighty!
