Ed Bouchette

Good noon, and welcome to snowy Pittsburgh. Let's begin
Lambert's Gang
11:56
Ed - In light of Harrison's retirement and all the talk about him being a "Steelers Great", do you think this team's defense in recent years lacks that tough-face identity that Harrison, Porter, Lloyd, Woodson, and Lambert brought to their teams?
Ed Bouchette
11:57
Well, they haven't played as well recently -- in spurts last season -- but don't understimate the "toughness" on their defense.

I think the Steelers should consider drafting an oversized SS who may be a step slow at safety but will have average-to-above average speed for an ILB; like the Edmunds kid from VT.  He's about the same size as Shazier.
Ed Bouchette
11:58
I don't see your question  but my answer would be Edmunds won't last to No. 28.

Ed If at 28 they feel a franchise qb is on the board how can they not take him right?
Ed Bouchette
11:58
And do what with him over the next 3 or 4 years?

In recent, our OLB draft picks have been more miss than hit.  Is that position that difficult to draft, or are the players just not fitting the scheme well?
Ed Bouchette
11:59
They missed on one, Jarvis Jones. They hit on one, T.J. Watt, who happens to be their most recent pick there. And the jury is still out on Marcus Dupree.

Ed, besides Bradshaw's secret surgery did the Steelers drafting a QB (Malone) in the 1st Rd just three years earlier factor in not selecting Marino?
Ed Bouchette
12:00
I do believe that was part of it. Plus, Chuck Noll liked Cliff Stoudt. Noll made the statement that they began building the Steelers with defense (Joe Greene) and they would start rebuilding with defense (Gabe Rivera)

Best undrafted Steele r Harrison
Ed Bouchette
12:00
Donnie Shell would have a say in that category too.

Are the Browns for real this year?
Ed Bouchette
12:01
They are for real at the moment. I'm not sure what is supposed to be real for them. 8-8?

Who do you see as the defensive signal caller this year? Am I correct in thinking TJ be the understudy?
Ed Bouchette
12:01
Outside linebackers aren't the signal callers

Hi Ed, why aren't/haven't the Steelers brought in more potential high round draft picks for visits this year?   They usually cover the whole spectrum from rounds 1-7 and this year looks bottom loaded thus far.  Just a timing issue?
Ed Bouchette
12:02
I don't have the list right in front of me, but it seems they have had several, including Leighton Vander Esch. Maybe they don't need to know more about some of those guys.

Ed, Better player in their best years: Harrison or Lloyd?
Ed Bouchette
12:04
Sometimes, it's just not one or the other. I believe both, at the top of their games, were great outside linebackers with attitudes. I would add Joey Porter to that group too.

Any chance of going back to a Steelers / Browns Saturday night game? Thanks
Ed Bouchette

Good god, no

hey Ed, seeing the rumors that Steelers are interested in Lamar Jackson. Your thoughts? I watched him throw at combine and he looked awful. I may burn my jersey if they go that route....
Ed Bouchette
12:05
It would be a foolish choice, and they do not make foolish choices in the first round of the draft.

Every team misses on draft picks, but do you think the Steelers down right waste some picks?  Such as drafting a 3rd string QB in Dobbs, or a LS who couldn't make the team.
Ed Bouchette
12:07
They needed a long snapper and you have to give them credit for going with another guy over their draft pick, knowing people on chats would ridicule them for it. I have no problem with the Dobbs pick and how do you know he won't pan out?
Moose
12:08
I'm seeing Davenport (edge) falling in some drafts.  Would he fit in our Defensive system?
Ed Bouchette
12:09
He is 6-6, 264 and listed as a defensive end. He's not beefy enough to play DE in the 3-4, so you'd have to convert him to OLB. I would not pick him in the first round.

Both had short stints.. who would you take Merriweather or Chad Brown? Thx
Ed Bouchette
12:10
Chad Brown. He was a star here, a star in Seattle's 4-3 defense and played well in New England. He also had a better attitude than Merriweather, who held out the entire 1988 season because he wanted a new contract.

A lot of people don't see us drafting a TE, yet we have met with a lot of them.  Do you think we will draft one?
Ed Bouchette
12:10
I think they could draft one, yes, just not high
12:11
He already retired a Steeler, back in the summer of 2014. No need to do it again, plus I think it would be a little awkward at this point on both sides.
Bill

Ed, do you see any possibility of the Steelers rescinding the franchise tag put on Bell?  I know it's not a popular thing to do, but look at all the money the team could save.  NE & PHI both proved last season that you can get to and win a Super Bowl without a franchise running back.
Ed Bouchette
12:11
Once they put the franchise tag on him, they had no plans to rescind it. That's not how they operate, even though Bell has tested them with the way he operates.
Jeff
12:12
Do you think Vander Esch or Evans will fall to 28 if so will either one have a chance at being our pick.
Ed Bouchette
12:12
I would think if either one were available, yes, one would be their choice. I'm not sure if one of them will last that long or not. Some people believe one will, others do not.
Miko
12:12
How do the new players look in phase 1?
Ed Bouchette
12:13
We don't get to watch, thank goodness.
