I think they had Evans rated higher than Vander Esch, but would have drafted either if they could have

How do you see the ILB and OLB positions playing out this season?
Ed Bouchette
2:18
You have to go with Watt and Dupree on the outside and Williams and Bostic inside

2:18
HI Ed, Thank you for your time.  Do you think Williams and Bostic can serve the defense well enough over the upcoming season or do you see the inside linebackers as a glaring weakness?
Ed Bouchette
2:18
Bostic supposedly is a good player when healthy. He's been on IR twice, traded twice.

Does 50's "revamped signing bonus" help open cap money for 2018? If it does, does this impact an ILB FA signing now that the draft is over? If so, who - in your mind - would be a potential target (if anybody of value is even available)?
Ed Bouchette
2:20
Giving Ryan Shazier most of his $8.7 million salary in a bonus does not change their salary cap situation at all for this year or any other year.

Thanks for doing these chats, Ed. Any positions other than ILB that is flying under the radar as a potential problem this year? Any positions you see becoming a strength, like perhaps CB?
Ed Bouchette
2:20
The potential problem is at outside linebacker. Very little depth there.

Never been to Pittsburgh. If I were to visit, how could I meet the fine Steelers writers of the famed Pittsburgh Post-Gazette?!
Ed Bouchette
2:22
Money talks. (just kidding, really, truly).

Our defense got trounced by the Jaguars twice last year so why is it so surprising Ben is upset about us using a pick on a QB? Don't you agree we should of used that pick for defense?
Ed Bouchette
2:23
When you say "defense" really the only spot they could have added that would have helped them this year was ILB or possibly OLB. They had none rated highly enough they thought was worth that pick. So I don't really blame them for drafting a QB in the third round that they had rated as a first-rounder. The draft is never just about this year. If they were worried about this year, they could have signed TWO inside linebackers in free agency.

Hi Ed.  Do you think paying Bell almost 2.5 times more than the second highest paid RB is a sound financial decision?  Any way Bell gets traded for players and picks this summer?
Ed Bouchette
2:24
No trade anticipated at all. No, it's not a real sound financial decision but rather a football decision they feel they had to make

Have any of the players ever taken you to task for something you wrote about them?
Ed Bouchette
2:25
Yes, it's part of the job
truesteelerfan
2:25
Are our #4, #5 WR when the season starts on the roster right now?
Ed Bouchette
2:26
Don't worry too much about the Nos. 4 and 5 WRs

How does someone truly evaluate a position coach?  They can only work with the talent given them right?
Ed Bouchette
2:27
Thank you. I've said that for years, that I have no idea how good some of the assistant coaches are unless someone in the organization who I trust tells me. It's like saying the QB coach in New England is the best ever and the one in Cleveland the worst.

U think Coach Munch can Coach up this big OL they drafted into a starter by next year?
Ed Bouchette
2:28
Munchak truly is a great line coach, so if he can't coach a kid up, no one can. Who would you have him replace at tackle if he does that?
Chris
2:28
Who's out at an Dobbs or jones
Ed Bouchette
2:28
The question that will linger all through the preseason.

If u didn’t cover the Steelers what would be your dream job?

Is the departure of OC Haley 100% responsibile for #7’s change in posture on how long he intends to play?
Ed Bouchette
2:30
Maybe only 98 percent

Can you tell me how our draft this year puts us closer to the super bowl?
Ed Bouchette
2:31
Well, the safety should help and I think WR James Washington will be more consistent that Martavis Bryant. Plus, they really did not lose anything in free agency beyond their No. 3 OT.
The Pale-Rider
2:31
I keep hearing some of the local writers saying Steelers don’t have a lot of depth on DL and were better off playing an injured Tuit and Hargrave.  U agree w that?
Ed Bouchette
2:33
I thought Tyson Alualu was a good No. 3 behind Tuitt and Hayward. NT plays about 30 percent of the time. LT Walton there also. Not great depth but not bad either
The Pale-Rider
2:33
What, if any, new draftee are u most looking forward to seeing at Camp?
Ed Bouchette
2:34
Well, you have to discount the QB because rookie QB is always No. 1 on my list to watch. After that, it's RB Jaylen Samuels and WR James Washington
Mike M.
2:34
Any news on what the jersey #s will be for the rookies?
Ed Bouchette
2:35
Not yet. They have rookie camp this weekend and we'll see then but they can always change the numbers when they cut down to 53.

Ed, was Edmonds on your radar as a potential 1st round pick?
Ed Bouchette
2:35
No, but I did list him fourth among my top 5 safeties

If Bostic gets hurt and misses time, who fills his shoes?
