Ed Bouchette's Steelers chat: 6.20.17

Ed Bouchette

He has a lot of work to do in training camp in order to win a roster spot
Tom
2:17
Is J. Hawkins practicing at LT or RT?  What side do you think  he ends up playing?
Ed Bouchette
2:18
I believe he will be No. 3, which means he needs to practice at both spots. But they believe his future lies at LT

2:18
How different will Williams be at buck compared to Timmons?
Ed Bouchette
2:19
I believe he will be better at stopping the run, maybe not so much range or covering but he and Shazier should complement each other

Ed I just finished the chuck noll book and was surprised to read about John Clayton writing about steeler practice habits that were illegal. As a team reporter have u ever felt conflicted on things to write about knowing it could hurt the team or image?
Ed Bouchette
2:20
My job is to my newspaper first, thus the readers. There are rules we have to follow in order to watch practice, but in the case you are talking about, Clayton didn't report that he saw them practicing in pads, one of the players asked him to help him pull off his shoulder pads in the locker room.
2:23
Donnie Shell had 51 in the regular season. He played in 201 regular season games. Shell was a past finalist for the HOF as a modern player, now must be considered as a senior. He has a chance some day, as does L.C. Greenwood

Do you think Jesse James could be a 500-600 yard TE, with maybe 6-7 Touchdowns? Does he have enough upside to do that. I think he's a little better than most give him credit for.
Ed Bouchette
2:23
If James continues to improve as he did from year one to year two, there is no ceiling.
Ryno
2:24
Smart idea for the Steelers to tag Bell this year, then let the market adjust hopefully lower for next season and beyond since it is skewed a bit for running backs at this point?
Ed Bouchette
2:24
They either had to tag him or let him become UFA because they could not come to terms on a deal. And that may never happen. If they tag him again next year, he'll earn about $14.5 M

What 2017 free agent do you see having the largest impact?
Ed Bouchette
2:25
Either Coty Sensabaugh at CB or DE Tyson Alualu

Davis or VW look hampered by their major offseason shoulder surgeries?
Ed Bouchette
2:25
No

Bell's droppin' mad beats and spittin' dope lyrics.  So, what favorite tracks of his are you looping? : P
Ed Bouchette
2:26
You talking about Archie Bell?

2:26
How different will Williams be at the buck position vs. Timmons?
Ed Bouchette
2:27
Timmons in his prime was the mack, and that suited his talents better as a wide-ranging athlete. He moved to the buck when Shazier played. Williams is more the true buck-type linebacker. Think of Larry Foote.

What are your impressions of Dobbs as a leader? Does he command the huddle/ he seems soft spoken on TV
Ed Bouchette
2:29
I think he has the respect of anyone he's played with, but he is a rookie QB who has had just 13 days of practice in shorts in the spring. It will take some time
Ryno
2:29
Just curious how many questions you roughly pull in for these chats?
Ed Bouchette
2:29
I will check with my accountant and issue the results the same time Trump releases his taxes.

I  love Ben and respect his game, no doubt. I asking you if he changes plays too much in red zone and we leave points out there.
Ed Bouchette
2:30
You have asked several times today and I finally will answer -- I have no idea.

How likely is it that Bell would hold out of training camp if he doesn't have a new contract?
Ed Bouchette
2:31
I think it is possible, not sure how likely though. He wouldn't lose any money unless he continued to hold out when the regular season begins
kjacksonpgh
2:31
Hi Ed, don’t you think that the Steelers players and coaches should stop talking about beating New England in the off season and just go out and play the game since they have lost to them consecutively for the past few years?
Ed Bouchette
2:31
Maybe,  but when they are continuously asked about New England, it's tough to avoid the topic
kjacksonpgh
2:32
Ed, you wrote that the Steelers may just decide to franchise L Bell instead of signing him to a long-term deal. I understand but isn’t Bell one of those special generational players because of his skill set?
Ed Bouchette
2:32
Yes, he is, but they've also had other special generational players who did not stick around long for one reason or another.
Bradford
2:33
I think they should A. Cut will gay or B. Put him on practice squad. He's past his prime and there are younger/ better players they are risking losing. Golson could still live up to the hype so why risk cutting Golson and keep a guy twice his age. If a guy gets injured then sure bring gay back to the 53 but I don't think any team will try and take him from PS to old and getting slow
Ed Bouchette
2:33
William Gay is not eligible for the practice squad

When will Joey Porter stop trying to replace Deebo with another OLB.  First Jarvis Jones (that didn't work..."Obviously") and now T.J. Watt.  I seem like J.P. doesn't hasn't liked Deebo since he (Harrison took his starting spot.  It seems as if J.P. is using his coaching position to get back at Deebo.  What's ur take?
Ed Bouchette
2:34
I think you have it wrong and I think you must know that it is not Joey Porter's decision to draft Jarvis Jones or T.J. Watt. And at 39, James Harrison is not going to be around much longer.

Thank you for another great chat. Vacation time! We'll be back July 25, two days before the Steelers report to Saint Vincent College. Have a great summer
