Ed Bouchette

It would be interesting, but that rarely happens and they like the strength coaches they have.

Why did AV sign a waiver and not just sign his tender?
Ed Bouchette
2:17
THAT, I'm not sure about because they could tear that up if they came to terms on a new contract. The waiver, I believe, pays him what the minimum wage deal would have if anything happens

2:18
What percent do you put it that Bell signs a long-term deal?
Ed Bouchette
2:18
I do not know about a percentage, I just don't think it will get done.

Since V. Williams is more limited in coverage how do you see the defense lining up, corner or safety heavy, in nickel and dime?
Ed Bouchette
2:19
We'll probably see more 6 DBs than we have in the more recent past. At one time, that was their normal alignment for pass defense but not long after Lawrence Timmons settled in, they began using the nickel with 5 DBs.

Do you feel it is fair for Pitt to not give AV a long-term deal now and make him play under the ERFA tag? What do you feel is fair market value for him?
Ed Bouchette
2:20
Well, fair is in the eyes of the beholder. They would like to give him a long-term deal and that is what he wants. But the sides have to agree on just what that deal will pay. Maybe the Steelers think what they are offering is fair. Maybe Al's agent thinks what they want is fair. There has to be a middle ground.

Ed...do you find the holdouts to be less acrimonious than the days prior to Free Angency?
Ed Bouchette
2:21
Not just less acrimonious but fewer and far between
Rich

If Coach Tomlin were to have a situation like coach Zimmer of Minnesota that took him away for a game or two, who do you think would be named as coach for that short stint?
Ed Bouchette
2:22
John Mitchell is the Steelers' assistant head coach, so I assume he would.
Rob
2:22
Is there more pressure on the Steelers to win a championship now since the Penguins have won back to back titles.
Ed Bouchette
2:22
No, the Steelers already put enough pressure on themselves to win a championship without help from anyone else.
Ike Steelheart
2:23
James Harrison and Co, had a great time in Mexico. Will we have a Steelers game soon in Mexico City?
Ed Bouchette
2:23
I keep hearing it will happen within the next two seasons.

Steelers are reported to have offered AV 2 years worth $12M, in your opinion, is he worth more? If so how much more?
Ed Bouchette
2:25
I would be stunned if that were the offer. They already have his rights over the next 2 years for less than $4 M. Why would they give him $12m? Also, if they are going to sign him to a new deal, it would have to be for a minimum of four years.

Ed...did any of the rule changes for the coming year surprise you?
Ed Bouchette
2:26
I don't like the OT rule, although anything that shortens OT is OK with me, I guess. I would prefer to see it eliminated.
Rick
2:26
Any tackling done at mini camp?
Ed Bouchette
2:26
It's not supposed to happen.
Rick
2:27
Comparing your first year covering the Steelers to now, do you think the game is more or less physical?
Ed Bouchette
2:27
Much less and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
GonzoJackson
2:28
Ed, who do you think comes out of the preseason as the nickel corner? Gay, Golson, Sutton, other? If its the incumbent Gay, who is the young guy challenging for his job in season?
Ed Bouchette
2:28
I think William Gay will start the season in the slot.
GonzoJackson
2:29
Ed, what do you think the starting plan is for Smith-Schuster? Play him on the outside as insurance if Bryant has further issues, or playing him more in the slot as opposed to the smaller and quicker Rogers?
Ed Bouchette
2:30
I think Eli Rogers will be their top slot cornerback, but there is room for 2 when you use 4 WR. How about this: Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant, Rogers and JuJu/Coates.
2:31
Thank you for another great chat. Time to go watch practice. See you next Tuesday, our final chat until the pre-camp chat.
