Ed Bouchette's Steelers chat: 7.31.18

Ed Bouchette
1:58
Good afternoon. Let's begin on the end of July
Mike H.
1:59
With AB and Juju firmly locked in at the 1 and 2 spots, who has the edge at the the 3 & 4? Eli Rogers? James Washington? Justin Hunter?! Any dark-horses at wideout to make the team?
Ed Bouchette
2:01
Eli may not be ready to start the season so I'd go with James Washington/Justin Hunter for 3-4. DHB next in the mix. This Damoun Patterson could be a dark-horse at WR. From Youngstown State, rookie FA
John
2:01
Do you feel the Steelers have A good chance to sign Bell next offseason to a long term contract?
Ed Bouchette
2:01
Just the opposite, I don't like their chances
Tyler
2:01
Rookies that have stood out so far? Any UDFA’s that have been early surprises?
Ed Bouchette
2:03
You'd have to put Terrell Edmunds and James Washington right there at the top. Edmunds has had a fast start and if he keeps it up, he will challenge UFA Morgan Burnett to start. LB Matthew Thomas, an undrafted rookie ILB, also off to a good start
Mike H.
2:03
Is it true Coach Fichtner may use Vance McDonald in a Gronkowski/Jimmy Graham-type fashion? An exotic look at wideout?
Ed Bouchette
2:03
They have used some tight ends split out in the past, including him, if that's what you mean
Nate
2:04
Ed, the past 2 years, there has been high hopes for Justin Hunter.  Even today, you wrote another article on him singing praises.  However, we have not seen anything during the season from him.  What gives you hope/confidence that he will have any type of role this year?
Ed Bouchette
2:04
My eyes and some words from coaches/scouts. His only season with the Steelers was 2017, not two years. Martavis Bryant was ahead of him so he did not get much opportunity. He also wasn't in sync with Ben. That is changing dramatically
Bruce from plattsburgh
2:05
Ed I'm worried at about linebackers they are average everywhere except watt we need to pick someone up soon
Ed Bouchette
2:05
If you think there's a savior out there available, you are probably mistaken. And I've been told that Timmons is not it.

2:05
Edmunds seems to be making a huge splash, chances of him starting if camp continues to go well and pre season games?
Ed Bouchette
2:06
Good, depending also on how Burnett comes along, but Edmunds has  been practicing and getting it done, Burnett has not. Long way to go still. Many times, rookies look great in the first week and then fade. We'll see.
John
2:06
Do you feel the Steelers will look to sign an offensive linemen due to the injury of Foster to provide depth?
Ed Bouchette
2:07
I expect them to sign a tackle more than a guard, although if they can find one to play both, better. It probably won't happen until teams cut
David
2:07
Hi Ed, I understand Bells talent, but with his constant drama , what seems to be a bad teammate and the notion that he’s most likely gone next year. Why not wait until late in camp and rescind the tag? Would make a statement to sign the tag and report , and leave him and other teams scrambling to get a deal
Ed Bouchette
2:08
He is not a bad teammate and if you were going to do that, you should have done it in March when you had alternatives to sign RB in free agency and draft one. Too late now, you need him because I don't think they have enough at the position without him.

It rarely is the best team that wins in the NFL but rather the healthiest. Knowing that why risk losing a key player before the season starts?  Should they forego training camp?
Ed Bouchette
2:09
Yes, I believe every starter should not show up until the start of the regular season, like Bell. You think that would keep them all safe and ready to go?
John Strange
2:09
Will the Steelers win a playoff game this year?
Ed Bouchette
2:10
They won two two seasons ago.

Why do you constantly inundate us with political tweets? (you’re doing it much more than sending Steeler info out now). While I am no fan of what’s going on politically, we follow people like you to escape this mess through sports, not get further bombarded by it. Perhaps you can set up a separate personal account? Also, before you say “just unfollow me” keep it mind that’s what this President would do.
Ed Bouchette
2:10
Maybe just ignore the tweets you don't like, how's that for an idea.
Jake L
2:11
Are you concerned about Jujus injury? Seems like it could be a question mark?
Ed Bouchette
2:11
Lot of minor injuries early in camp, which is typical of camps. I wouldn't fret too much.
Mark
2:12
What do the players typically do on a camp day off?  Hang in the dorms, work out in the gym, go home to Pgh for the day?
Ed Bouchette
2:12
There are 90 on the roster and I think probably as many different ways to spend their days off. Think of what you do on your day off and that might be typical for them too.
Okee Dokee
2:13
Why sign Eli Rodgers? He was never a standout and had huge fumbles in the playoffs. Why not give a young guy a shot to a worst be just another wr?
Ed Bouchette
2:13
He does not even count on the roster yet and he has had a productive season under his belt. If a young guy shows he can do it better, they would consider that. Rosters are cut for another month
Rjt
2:13
With the helmet rule are fans going to see a noticeably different game?
Ed Bouchette
2:14
The NFL hopes so
Mike H.
2:14
Any word from the coaches/organization on the teams approach towards the National Anthem?
Ed Bouchette
2:14
It became a non-issue for the Steelers after the Chicago game last season and I would assume it will continue to be one.
Alan

Do you think the 2018-19 defense will improve, stay the same, or decline, barring injury?
Ed Bouchette
2:17
This ain't hockey or basketball, it's the 2018 season, not 18-19. I think they will improve in the secondary. The line is the same, although Tuitt is healthy and should be more effective. the linebackers are the big question for me, both inside and out after Watt. Depending a lot on Dupree
Double D
2:17
Do you see any improvement in the secondary this year from previous years. I hate to say it, but Tom Brady eats them up every year. Hopefully this time things improve.
Ed Bouchette
2:17
Tom Brady has plenty of defenses for lunch.

In your opinion, does Alualu start at NT when in that package or Hargrave? Thanks
