I thought the same, but they obviously differed with us.

Any chances that they bring in another defensive veteran that may be a cap casualty during the end of preseason ?
Ed Bouchette
2:23
They will look, as they always do, but especially for offensive tackles and inside linebackers. That does not mean they will find one they consider better than what they have.

I assume you've been called worse by worse players but have you been called worse by a better player than AB?
Ed Bouchette

Johnny Bench once growled at me. Does that count?

Ed, I screwed up my question at 2:11. I meant to say, which 2-3 non drafted rookies.
Ed Bouchette
2:24
And I think I threw three of them in my answer -- Patterson, Thomas and Ola.

Hitting on all these WR is great but when will they draft a capable linebacker? The ideology has totally changed. They used to skimp on the offensive line, then spend money on defense. Now the O line and skill players dominate the payroll. Do you think there are less players on defense making big money than in the past?
Ed Bouchette
2:25
Cam Heyward, Stephon Tuitt and Joe Haden make good money. I don't have the figures in front of me, but there are more stars and more big money-makers on offense. And I'd bet you'd find that to be the case for most good NFL teams.

Mike Tomlin or Kevin Colbert?  Who is more likely to get fired first?
Ed Bouchette
2:26
Neither. I think both will leave on their own account when they feel it is time to do so.

Terrell Edmunds - too early to call a bust?  The guy show very little promise.  More like a safe third rounder, no?
Ed Bouchette
2:27
Complete opposite. As just one example, I asked Vince Williams the other day who on defense impressed him in the PS opener and he told me Edmunds.

Ben's is having a great camp because (a) Haley's gone or (b) Mason's here?
Ed Bouchette
2:27
c) Ben is here

Who is going to be back up RB?  Please don't tell me Conner!!!

You answered your own question

Do you see this “dollar” defense as anything more than a gimmick to try and hide the fact that ILB is the Achilles Heel of this team??
Ed Bouchette
2:29
I see it as them trying to put the best players on the field on passing downs and without a Ryan Shazier or Lawrence Timmons in his prime, subbing with a safety makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that they did not find a linebacker who could do that.

Do you foresee the possibility of the Steelers possibly trading for an ILB prior to the start of the season?
Ed Bouchette
2:30
No, but I did not see them trading for Vance McDonald last year, nor have Joe Haden fall into their laps, so you never know.

What’s going on with the backup tackle position? I know they picked up this new OL but he’s been cut by so many teams, it’s hard to think he’s more than a body. What will the team do if Gilbert or AV sustain an injury?
Ed Bouchette
2:32
I was told it looks like rookie Chukwuma Okorafor will be that man.

Does McCullers look more motivated than in previous training camps?
Ed Bouchette
2:32
Not to my eyes.
I'm not saying he's not motivated, I just don't see a difference in his play.

Ed - When a player retires, do they get to choose what team they retire from - Thinking Harrison - do they Steelers have to give him permission to retire as a Steeler, or is it only the last team you played for?
Ed Bouchette
2:35
There really is no such thing except lately there's been the gimmick where teams sign a player who went elsewhere to a one-day contract so he can "retire" with them. It's just a nice sendoff by the team, really. The Steelers did that with Santonio Holmes, less the contract signing. James Harrison, if you'll recall, announced his retirement at Steelers headquarters after he finished playing one season with the Bengals. Three games in, however, the Steelers signed him to a real contract to play for them again.

Glad to hear Washington is looking good. How has the PSU safety looked and any updates on James Conner and his groin?
Ed Bouchette
2:36
Marcus Allen hasn't made a big impression, but there's time. Conner said he will practice today, which is coming up.
Thanks for another great chat. See you next Tuesday.
