That always surprised me. They are different animals and punt is much more difficult. But if you are not a starter and can return punts, you should be able to return kickoffs, IMO

IYO how good is Tyler Matakevich?   I've read he's never going to be any more than a backup, special teams guy. Then someone writes he has the skill set and football smarts to be great.  I'm hoping he does well with the Steelers.
Ed Bouchette
2:15
He reminds me of Jerry Olsavsky, a 10th-round draft choice. They said the same things about him but somehow he was an important piece to the Steelers in the 1990s. He's not going to be Ryan Shazier and his best play will come around the line of scrimmage. The game has changed and you need linebackers to be more like Shazier/Timmons -- guys who can play all over the place.

In your opinion, it kinda tough to get a decent evaluation of the receivers when they don't have a decent QB getting them the ball in the preseason as of now?
Ed Bouchette
2:16
That's always been the problem for receivers trying to make it in the exhibition games.

I have only seen Duprees injury listed as undisclosed - how serious is it?
Ed Bouchette
2:17
Not much. I think it's a hammy. They said he was close this past week. You may see him Saturday.

Why not kill 2birds with 1stone (glut at WR / zip at DB) and transfer Coates from wr to db. Understand he was a decent CB in college and his "hands" haven't improved since he moved to WR.
Ed Bouchette
2:17
I think he'd be more valuable as an inside linebacker.

Hi Ed, haven't heard anything about the rookie long snapper.  Does that mean he's doing great?
Ed Bouchette
2:17
No, it means few people care about the long snapper.
Brandon
2:17
Do you think golson has already taken the field for the last time in black and gold? Would he interest anyone enough to claim him if he was cut?
Ed Bouchette
2:18
You mean Golson once took the field?
Brandon
2:18
Chances Trey Williams makes the team?
Ed Bouchette
2:18
He's a longshot but if they trot him and him only out again Saturday to return punts, you will know they are seriously thinking about keeping him.
Brandon
2:19
Based on Dobbs performance so far is there cause for concern? Or is it simply a rookie being a rookie?
Ed Bouchette
2:19
He was to be no more than a third-stringer this year and that is what he'll be.

To me the AFC hasn't been this shallow in contenders in a while. Do you feel the same way? NE, PIT, KC, maybe OAK. I think that's it.
Ed Bouchette
2:20
Tennessee is my sleeper, not that I would pick them to win anything than possibly the AFC South.

Ed, During the 70s when Coach Noll ruled and players were hitting much more frequently during camp...were there a lot more injuries too?  It seems like players get hurt so much more than years ago.
Ed Bouchette
2:21
They had their injuries but a lot of times they played through them. Plus, concussions weren't treated nearly the way they are today.

Dancing with the Stars champion, Ironman, appointment to a Presidential Advisory Commission, film and TV appearances...  does any of this tip the scale for Hines' HOF candidacy, or is it solely based on NFL career?
Ed Bouchette
2:21
No. Strictly his NFL career, which to me is HOF worthy.

Ed, any sense that Pouncey's injury is serious enough to jeopardize him playing in the season opener?
Ed Bouchette
2:22
No. He got kicked in the shin I believe. He practiced a little last week. He should be ready and you may see him out there Saturday.

With the soft schedule the first 8 weeks and much more difficult 2nd half schedule...isn't 6-2 or even 7-1 in 1st half of year leading up to the week 9 bye a must to have any chance to overtake NE for home field advantage come January?
Ed Bouchette
2:23
You need to go 13-3 with one victory vs. NE to have that shot because the Patriots will go 6-0 in their division.

Hi Ed! With camp completed, and practices closed to the public, how much access to practice do credentialed journalists, such as yourself, get for Steeler practices moving forward?
Ed Bouchette
2:23
We can watch the whole thing, if we want.
DJTrump

Did the Steelers practice indoors during the eclipse?
Ed Bouchette
2:24
They did not practice Monday. A few of them did go out and watch, wearing glasses.

Any rumblings on trades for CB help?
Ed Bouchette
2:24
The only one I heard was for the kid in L.A. who will make $17 million on the franchise tag this year. I debunked that through a few sources. That was a ramble, not a rumble.

Hi Ed...I don't know about you..but it seemed like Will Gay is going to be a huge problem in coverage again.Do you believe the secondary is any better with him involved in it?
Ed Bouchette
2:24
No

What is Shazier's status?
Ed Bouchette
2:25
He returned to practice somewhat late last week but did not play.

Please tell me you haven't gotten any "Bart Houston for third-stringer?" questions yet. (I sadly know the answer.)
Ed Bouchette
2:25
I did.
