Smooth, standard deliveries prevent injury and help control, but funky, deceptive deliveries are harder to hit. True as a general rule? And should pitchers optimize one way or the other, or aim for some mix?

I think I agree. But! There are ways to be deceptive without affecting repeatability which is the key to command and health. Imagine bringing the ball up in a long arm path behind you, or straight up by your head. All things equal, the one by the head is more deceptive and healthier.
