As someone who has been following the Pirates system for years, it often seems like our prospects developing a change-up has been that last hump before they're deemed major league ready. My question is, is this something that might just be an organization development specific thing or is that a pretty common barrier for a lot of pitchers, and if so, why is that?

It's hard for a breaking ball guy to learn a change and vice versa, it's just something about mechanics. To me, the knuckle curve and the split finger are the answers to that question, because they are thrown like fastballs, but the splitter makes teams nervous.

Surprised that after a stretch of 22% swinging strikes in the minors that he didn't get a lot of whiffs in first start. Still, he has three good pitches. Good velocity. Has improved command.

Ketel Marte seems like the most recent in a stretch of Mariners SS who is just a shade or two over replacement level, all coming from their system. Not thematic either - Miller skewed bat, Taylor field, Marte who knows. Is it particularly hard to develop SS, or is it a Mariners problem, or just coincidence?
