Still doesn't have the feel/instincts to make that kind of quantum leap. Has that kind of talent, though.

At what point is solid depth in your farm system without a lot of highly-rated prospects (60+?) more beneficial than several high end guys but not a lot after that?  Does it depend on the state of the major league roster?  Other factors?  Is there a place where the lines intersect?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:29
I think depth means more when you actually have good player dev.

Did you catch Espinoza back on the mound after 4 years off and 2 TJs?

93-95, one curveball at 78, was very amped up and not locating (which is fine right now)

For my 10 team roto dynasty League., I need OF help. Hunter Dozier has the OF eligibility. Would u recommend dropping leody teveras for him if I need the OF help? My concern is leody might not make opening roster, and even if he does, it's not guarantee he hits lead off, or steal bags (more random), and also with deadening of the ball, I'm concerned he won't his as much hr (10+). What's your take on teveras? I see he's outside of top 100 for your prospect list. You think  His type of player is easily replaceable (I.e jarran Duran)

I think Leody almost certainly has more real world impact than fantasy because so much of it is defense. Maybe you can try to move Leody + another piece for one CF upgrade then pick up your boy Doz.

This is perhaps a silly question, but with players in relatively loose-fitting, full-body uniforms I kind of have trouble seeing which are in the best physical shape. You seem to have a better beat on it. Is that from seeing guys out of uniform, or sourcing, or have you just learned what to look for? Thanks!
Eric A Longenhagen

It's a lot of seeing them pre-game in compression shirts rather than their billowy uniform. And also the pants, the baseball pants don't lie.

What exactly is bat speed? If it's literally the speed of the bat, then isn't it simply identical to raw power? Or is it more like bat quickness, time to get the bat from decision point to contact point?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:35
It can be visually deceiving because a longer path might look slower to your eye but actually be moving faster. So the end of the bat is moving faster than the handle. Shorter-levered players might be quicker through the zone but not generating as much bat speed as longer levered guys whose swing are longer and appear slower to your eye.
12:36
You could calculate bat speed with the high speed video (you know the frame rate of the camera (FPS) and the distance of the plate) but I usually end up interpolating bat speed based on rotation....
12:37
so like, if you look at Torkelson's first swing in this video:
12:38
and note where his bat ends up at the end of his backswing, that's super crazy ability to rotate. I couldn't do that slowly if I tried, let alone with that kind of force.
12:39
Here's another guy who blows me away with the rotational velocity of his body. Luis Matos, CF, San Francisco Giants - YouTube
go to the 1:50 mark
his freaking barrel touches the ground behind him, that's amazing

What college baseball do you recommend this weekend?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:40
Florida/Texas A&M. Can't go wrong with any series opening SEC play.

lots of people have spoken about Trammell's improvement this Spring, but have you looked at Justin Dunn? Results look just as bad, but does the new stuff (similar to Kikuchi last year) change your evaluation of him as a starter?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:41
Nope, watched his start last night. Chucking heat past guys early, fell off late. Seems like a reliever to me. But the way he looks now is definitely better than last year. Body looks way better. Looks more like a 40 FV relief piece now than an up/down guy.

Do you think Frelick gets drafted as an outfielder, infielder, or utility guy?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:41
CF
but I really wanna see a 2B try

12:42
When projecting body, do you look at frame and shoulders? Do you tick up players that come to camp more "built" than the previous year?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:42
Yes, broad shoulders, flat upper back, tapering at the waist, underlying musculature.

12:42
Rocker or Leiter?
Eric A Longenhagen
Obvs this is subject to change.
Rocker's slider just has exactly what I'm looking for in a breaking pitch now.

You and KG highlighted Charlis Aquino as a guy who might show up having filled out and showing more power. Have you heard anything this spring, or has he yet to join the team?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:44
I don't think he's in camp yet, he's a low-level minor leaguer.

Who was the first player you scouted as amateur and had one of those “this guy is going to play in the big leagues” moments? We’re you right?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:44
Matt Bowman. Yes.

12:45
Does Tony Santillan have a chance to get back the prospect status he had a few years ago? What's his likely outcome?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:45
Doubtful. Sitting 97 this spring but still getting crushed. One of those kinds of fastballs that just doesn't play at its velocity. Think he's a single-inning reliever in the end.

Do you think Aaron Ashby is more likely to develop into a starter or into a bullpen role for the Brewers? Or maybe a hybrid of a long reliever and spot starter type like Brent Suter and Freddy Peralta have been?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:45
I think you nailed it, I'd use him just like Hader.

Have you ever considered the possibility of yourself being biased against particular teams during prospect evaluation (for whatever reason, whether its due to teams being better at evaluating/developing prospects, or being wrong historically on certain teams). However as regimes and philosophies change, perhaps there is a lag in your evaluation?  This is my long way of saying that I do not understand the bottom 10 evaluation of the Jays system.
