What's up everyone? Howdy from Arizona, where it is officially 'Hot AF' and the AZL is now underway.
Some housekeeping:
We'll have a July 2 board up tomorrow
Daily Prospect Notes are back and can be found here: We'll have a July 2 board up tomorrow
Submitted today's to Carson just moments ago, will link if he gets it up during chat

Also, wrote this for ESPN Insider subscribers: http://insider.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/23907191/mlb-breakout-m...
Okay, let's roll...

What happened to Garret Mitchell this year?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:10
That's UCLA freshman OF Garrett Mitchell, who was one of the toolsier high schoolers not to sign with a club when he was drafted in 2017, by Oakland...
2:12
He's still a twitchy plus-plus runner who needs swing work to get to the raw power
He played a bunch, just not all the time, in part because of the upperclass OFs in front of him, including Mike Toglia who is a name to know for the 2019 draft

Brusdar to High-A!! Does he have the potential, however slim, to be an ace?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:14
I'm always gonna say 'ace' is heavy for just about every pitching prospect. It's like 6-8 guys in the bigs right now that I'd call 'ace'
2:15
But Brusdar is really good
My aces, btw:
2:16
Scherzer, Kershaw (still), Sale, Verlander, Kluber, Severino is forcing his way in (it's ace stuff, certainly) maybe deGrom is too
I'm a miser about it, it's cool if you're not.

What do you think of Jeisson Rosario? Do you think he could make top 100 next year?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:20
He's up to .270/.390!/.330 at Fort Wayne. I think he has some issues. Not sure how much pop he's gonna grow into, it's a smaller frame, some effort level stuff I've talked about before (and I'm not a stickler for that stuff, typically) but he also has elite hand-eye and bat control, so he might be special in this one specific, very important way that still makes him very good.
But he's weird. 50+ FV at the end of the year? Maybe.

Eric, thanks for all the wonderful content you guys have been churning out! What's the deal with Josh James? I expected to see him on the midseason top 100, but no luck. How come guys like Paddack made such a huge leap, but not James?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:24
So, for background (and I'm gonna start giving more context on these guys in chat before I answer, and I'd love to know how you all feel about that in the comments) James is a 25 y/o JUCO righty at TRiple-A whose stuff has spiked each of the last three years. H'es missing a lot of bats. Velo and breaking ball, when it's located, are both great. Command and the way the breaking ball plays in the zone are not. Think he ends up in relief. We were too light on him going into the season but if you wanna group him in the 50 FV guys it'd have to bee with the huge stuff/relief risk guy on the list in the Touki/Abreu area, and we just think those guys have better stuff (three pitches or a 7, etc)

Rather have pitcher with 60 curveball 55 slider or 70 curve

Seems to me like Miguel Amaya is breaking out this year. Has he become the Cubs best prospect?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:27
He was already a dude last year (http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/top-22-prospects-chicago-cubs/) so I wouldn't 'say he's breaking out, people are just noticing now because it's on paper. Tools are still about what they were, maybe er're all a little more confident in it now that he's performing. He's an advanced, 18 y/o everyday catching prospect.

Is Max Fried a starter or reliever?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:28
I think he's a reliever. I get why you keep trying to start him (just look at how patience was rewarded with Newcomb) and don't blame them for doing it, even though I don't think it's gonna work.

Is Jose Devers legit?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:30
18/yo SS sent from NYY to MIA in Stanton deal. Hitting an empty .290 in full-season ball. I do, in a sense that I liken him to Andres Gimenez last year. Stays at short, the bat-to-ball skills are great, I don't care that he might not do a whole lot else because that's probably enough.

Do you think Ryan Weathers will sign?  I read an interview with him speaking very highly of the Vanderbilt staff recently
Eric A Longenhagen
2:33
Padres first rounder, 7th overall, advanced HS lefty. Full report on the Board. I think he signs and would view any public-facing comments like that as posturing.
We had SD/Weathers together for a while and have to think $ was discussed at some point.
2:34
Also, most guys who don't sign had something happen with the physical

Why is July 2nd the day for international free agents, as opposed to, say...July 1st? Or January 1st, or literally any other day of the year?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:36
I have no idea. Probably was picked because it made sense as an age-appropriate on ramp for players hitting AZL/GCL at 18? Like, to the month.

Is Ronaldo Hernandez a guy who could start popping up on some Top 100 lists?
Eric A Longenhagen

Rays catcher hitting, for a second straight year, now in full-season. Yes.
