Would any teams that have a competitive balance pick look to trade it in order to save money given the circumstances of this draft? Or are teams barred from making such a transaction at the moment?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:47
good question. Maybe they would for the right asset/player? If it's an effort to save money (remember draft bonuses aren't paid immediately this year, they're deferred) then it'd have to be a very low-paid player or slot money or something. Seems unlikely

What do you think the prime reasons are for a hitter to have an expected game power above their expected raw power grade?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:48
lift in the swing and an approach that enables airborne contact
Ford
12:49
Waters approach is that bad?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:49
Watched him see like 5 pitches in 4 at-bats this fall. Yeah.

If Hunter Greene didn't throw so hard, even a little less, would he even be a first round pitcher? A HS RH without a breaking ball? Jamon
Eric A Longenhagen
12:50
If Kelley goes round 1 you have your answer, right?

I was under the impression it was Martin's defense that put him over Gonzales but Gonzales had the better bat.
Eric A Longenhagen
12:51
Gonzales has more power but if I'm just talking hit tool, I'm more comfortable with Martin

Do you think Austin Wells can stick at C?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:51
nope

If we do see a lot of top HS prospects from this year go to college, do we see teams strategize to have top picks/large bonus pools for 2023?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:53
yup, I think the value of comp picks the next couple years is more significant than usual. I thought some teams clearly behaved like that's true for this year, too (STL, TB)

Love the book! Just have a minor clarification question on physical projection: one of you mentioned the differences in projecting on ostensibly similar body types and said you can see that more easily in basketball. Can you expand on that a bit?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:54
Yeah, it's just easier to see/assess bodies in that uniform than in baseball.

Assuming the minor leagues look as you described above (4 full season leagues with complex games), when do you think we see the tippy top J2 signings (Baby Vlad, Wander, Dominguez) in Low A?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:56
If the Int'l signign period is moved to January then I assume they're on the complex later that summer? It costs Latino kids a couple of months, right? Rather than sign a guy in July and bring him to the states for instructs that fall, you push it to January and the kid comes to the states for the first time for the AZL? Or maybe stayd in the DR and arrives in the fall, a full year later than previously? Regardless, it's a year longer that it takes to reach MLB. I think MLB wants to avoid the 26-28 year old free agent and pushing a lot of high schoolers to college and by shifting the Int'l calendar, they've made it harder for one to exist.

Your ranking is higher on Waters than I would've expected after hearing your comments.

Kiley and I were still together for the Braves list

You mentioned "towel drills" on your Vlad Gutierrez writeup. What is that?

Any idea if the 'taxi squad' earns service time? Or if the taxi shuffle requires the same 10-day stay as the AAA shuttle?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:59
No idea but that's a hugely important question.
2020 vs. 2019 HS Bats
12:59
Would you take Veen over any of the top 2019 HS bats (Witt, Abrams, Greene, and Carroll)?
Eric A Longenhagen
1:00
have him behind CJ and Bobby, even with Greene, a shade ahead of Carroll.

What hitter is going to start the mainstream board blow ups ala Kyler murray last year? Then again not really sure boards blew up after that
Eric A Longenhagen
1:01
It wasn't just Kyler going it was also Libby and Gorman falling that had people scrambling. I think Dingler or some other college bat(s) get popped early by teams totally avoiding HS'ers

So are you saying Kiley had a Braves bias?
Eric A Longenhagen
1:04
No, I'm saying we disagreed about Waters. Would you really expect a person to have positive bias for an org they stopped working for suddenly?

Re: not liking how teams don't have some guys on their boards because they didn't get out to see them this year. Do you dislike it because it seems shortsighted on the teams' part if they're not sourcing other info, or more because the whole situation sucks?
Eric A Longenhagen
1:06
Some of both. We all watched Mick Abel for like two years and I think it's kinda dumb to ignore or slide him on your board because you haven't seen him for 7 months or whatever, but be all hot and bothered for a college pitcher who has had four good starts and who you haven't seen for three months. Is there some arbitrary cutoff when you start/stop being comfortable? Grab your junk and take the best player.
1:07
That's gonna do it for me. Be well, see you next week
